In regard to #2: XP Pro and XP Home are practically identical. The only difference I've heard of (that matters to me) is that XP Pro has extra networking features.

I found this a couple of days ago from Play This Thing.

Smash planets together, introduce rogue stars, and build new worlds from spinning discs of debris. Fire a moon into a planet or destroy everything you've created with a super massive black hole.

You can simulate and interact with:

* Our solar system: the 8 planets,160+ moons, and hundreds of asteroids
* Nearest 1000 stars to our Sun
* Our local group of galaxies
* An unlimited number of fictional scenarios

Tinker with your creation or sit back and watch the effects of gravity unfold. It's fun, accessible, and easy to use.

It's pretty fun to play around with. The trial version allows you to play around for 60 minutes before locking out some features. I'm not sure what the exact term is, but the software appears to be (required) donationware to me. You can pay whatever you think it's worth to you for a personal license. If your payment is $25 or more then he will send you a pair of Red & Blue 3D glasses which can be used with this software.

Be sure to check out the video!

So when can we try it out?

It would be interesting to see the results if you could feed it the entire text of the Bible. Or Anne Frank's Diary.

Carols diagnostic list is the way to approach this, but if you're not getting any POST beeps with all your peripherals removed then you're wasting your time trying anything else...

That's assuming the PC speaker is even plugged in and working.

Here, here.... or is that Hear, hear?  Whichever I am all for it! ;D

It's "hear, hear" as in, "Everybody hear what is being said because I agree with it!"

Congratulations and nice job!

BTW: Was that Lamb Chop as in Sherri Lewis?

The website says Mally (Mallory) Lewis & Lamb Chop.

Ah. Her daughter! Another cute redhead. (Just like Mom.)

Here's Mom: http://www.youtube.c...&feature=related

That's right! It's been so long since I've seen it that I forgot what she looked like. I guess that Mally doing the show solves my confusion about having heard that the lady had passed away some years ago and wondering why there was still a dedicated website to the show..

Frequently when I'm working on a game I have to figure out some math (trigonometry) to get things to move or appear correctly. I've been thinking for a few years now that I ought to have some sort of collection of all the equations I've needed time and again.

A quick math reference with examples of how to use them.

Then again, that was before I even took the corresponding math classes that taught how to do what I was attempting, so I was trying to figure things out that were beyond my mathematical education. It's not so hard now that I've taken a trig class and started into calculus.

Still, something like that might be useful on a game development/help site. I'd be happy to contribute things like that.

Drupal also has issue tracking, forum (threaded or flat) and collaborative docs, plus being a full-blown CMS and tons of add-ons. I'm looking at it right now, to unite the services related to my software: web-site (DNN), wiki style docs (Wikispaces), issue tracking (Mantis).

I'll post some more after testing it further.

Mouser didn't have nice things to say about Drupal last year...

Ok, it's confirmed, it just gives a random number, based on the text on the page. I just tried getting the values of my idiotic page, and then changing "text" to "test", and the values changed dramaticly after the one-letter change..  ;D ;D

Sounds like it should be adlib.microsoft.com.

Here's my latest coding project, inspired by this thread and that old familiar Lamb Chop song:

Code: PHP [Select]
  1. while (true)
  2. {
  3.  print "this is the pun that never ends. Yes it goes on and on my friend! \n";
  4.  print "Cranioscopical starting saying it, knowing full well what it was, \n";
  5.  print "and Shades and 40hz joined in repeating just because \n";
  6. }

Living Room / Re: Advice: Never use your ISP provided email address

The problem with the gmail trick [email protected] is that it doesn't take a genius to work out that [email protected] is your main account.

There is another problem too [email protected] will be delivered too - even though it is not a real email address that you gave out.

It is only a matter of time before spammers attack this form of naming and the owners main address.
-Carol Haynes (July 19, 2008, 07:18 PM)

That's the beauty of the method I use. Nobody sees the name+xyz@gmail account. In fact, they don't see Gmail at all. They see xyz@mydomain.com which is forwarded to [email protected] behind the scenes.

And with my host's control panel, it's not hard to mass edit all my forward-only e-mail accounts to change the forwarding address if my Gmail account finally is overrun with spam.

But let's put it this way: I've been using this method with my current Gmail account, which I've had for over two years now, and the only spam I ever get is an occasional newsletter from Xara, who just won't remove me from their mailing list.

Has anyone who is experienced with these types of tools checked out dotProject? It's another freeware/open source collaborative project tool.

SNAFU has been dated back as far as 1941 and FUBAR back to 1944 (both US Army slang now in general use)
-Carol Haynes (July 19, 2008, 05:22 PM)

I remember playing a video game 20 years ago on the Intellivision called SNAFU. I had no idea what it meant, but even today I have fond memories of steering my snake/worm thing around trying not to get trapped in a corner or have my tail eaten off. I can even remember the music. Just goes to show how commonplace that (rather obscene (for kids)) term has become since it was originally coined.

What's this trick with username plus [email protected]? What does it do for my gmailbox?

You can add anything after your username in your gmail account and it will still be delivered to your normal gmail account. But it makes it easy to see where it's coming from or create filters.

Let's say your Gmail account is [email protected]. But you have a software business and you also like to go to the auction and another thing you do in your spare time is sign up for notifications about Remote Controlled Airplanes.

To make it easier to filter and apply labels (if you care to do that with your e-mail) you can display your e-mail address on your software website as [email protected]. And for auction transactions you can use [email protected]. And for all your RC news letters, you can use [email protected].

It will all go to your account like normal but up at the top where it says "[email protected] to me" it will instead say "[email protected] to joebob+RCFlyer"

As I said, this makes it easier to sort your mail and apply labels and filters without needed hundreds of separate e-mail accounts that require you to log into separately.

n00b question about something like TrueCrypt:

I'd love to try out some of the features, like a "fake" clean windows install in case anybody boots my computer without me using the right key or something, with the "real" install that I use encrypted and hidden. But it seems the best way to set that up would be from a fresh format. Is it possible/recommended to start with a drive that already has data on it or would TrueCrypt be most effective/clean starting with a newly formatted drive?

It's definitely worth $10 a year to own a domain name that allows you to create as many e-mail addresses as you want. I use Gmail for ALL my e-mail, but if a site requires me to sign up for it I create a new e-mail using the following pattern:

Let's say that somedumbsite.com wants me to sign up for an account before I can access the content, but I'm not too sure how true they are to their privacy policy. I'm paying $10 a year to register mydomain.com. I also have a Gmail account which is [email protected]

I create a new e-mail address: [email protected]
Then I have it forward all mail to my Gmail address: [email protected]

This way, ALL my mail goes to one easy-to-check account. if I start to get spam I know exactly who/where it is coming from and I can either just remove the e-mail address from mydomain or set up a Gmail filter to trash it.

EDIT: For clarity.

I found another definition for PHP - Personal Home Page.
-Carol Haynes (July 19, 2008, 03:40 AM)

That's not accurate when referring to web documents that have the PHP extension. From the official PHP.net website:

What does PHP stand for?

PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. This confuses many people because the first word of the acronym is the acronym. This type of acronym is called a recursive acronym. For more information, the curious can visit » Free On-Line Dictionary of Computing  or the » Wikipedia entry on recursive acronyms.

I took a quick glance at the Wikipedia entry cited and found this one: AMARA - Amara Means A Recursive Acronym. Most of them seem to be acronyms that people found the article and wanted to come up with something clever, so they took an acronym for a real product/service/company/whatever and found out other words that could be used to make it recursive.

That's like a dictionary definition:

Dog: A dog that barks
-Carol Haynes (July 18, 2008, 07:52 PM)

I've always heard it said that you should never define a word by using the word you're trying to define. Or something along those lines.
