Find And Run Robot / Re: "Mail" instead of "Thunderbird"

so to make an alias show this more easily, you can create a regex alias that matches like ^nn(.*)$
and in results put: dosearch E:\Portable\Note\ $$1

try that.

thanks mouser, works a treat

Developer's Corner / Re: Apple's App Store Mistake
« Last post by tomos on November 22, 2009, 08:44 AM »

Very interesting.  Apple does demand control, that's mostly why I avoid their products no matter how cool I think they are.  I have not once bought an apple product in my life, yet I think they are super cool.  I don't think I can say that for any other company.
While I realize that terms have a tendency to change meaning over time, Apple does not qualify for any meaning of cool that I'm familiar with. Ultra Trendy... Yes.

cool because they make their stuff look really good - that's one of the big reasons they're ultra-trendy/popular after all. And as superboyac says, they 'innovate' a bit.

But no, they arent being very cool are they !!

I know this is probably covered elsewhere - I did search but it's very difficult to narrow it down:

Can I use FARR to show a particular folder contents (also presumably best done using an alias ?)
e.g. my Note folder to show my current notes
Say with alias NN, FARR will show the just contents of that folder.

If I add NN to the alias as 'Reg expression' just the folder shows & launches (in file manager) if 'opened'
If I add an * to end of the path, no joy either ( E:\Portable\Note\*)

I'm slowly figuring out the interface - lost the alias for a while & then realised it was under 'myaliases.alias'
Was also confused by the two tickboxes - one beside the alias, one top-right but see now that one is for individual aliases & the other for the group (for a beginner who only has one alias in the 'group' - eh, sometimes things sink in slowly!)

please report the false positive here, and i will do the same:

No no - it's Avira "AntiVir" - I'll have a look for a link

Dont worry - I'll report it  ( http://forum.avira.c...oard&boardID=131 )

note:
when I downloaded the file & scanned it I got no warning - since that I can go to the webpage no problem.

So I think it's something in the webpage or url - I'll report it on the forum

I was having trouble updating from 2.75.02

DCupdater says said "get update failed" [read on]

so I went to
https://www.donation...hotcaptor/index.html
& clicked on download link & Avira AntiVir Premium blocks it saying:

I added their explanatory link in there which is a lot of blah blah blah
Could it be possible that Avira was blocking dcUpdater from downloading it too? - yes, that was the problem!

Is it any help if I contact them or how does one prove it's not dubious?

General Software Discussion / Re: General brainstorming for Note-taking software
« Last post by tomos on November 20, 2009, 03:52 PM »
I have read this thread and all or most others on organizing and I wanted to get some feedback.

What has been on my mind is finding a note repository or PIM that is capable of presenting a view of all my saved notes or appointments or tasks and to me this is important, not just their respective titles or headers but a more detailed view. There are examples that come close like Do-Organizer and others which have 'reports' but I believe these are more tailored for printing purposes. May be what I am looking for is to have my notes arranged on the screen like a mind mapper but again may be.

Any thoughts? Point me to one discussed in this or other threads that may come close? :)

I almost posted a link for Text Block Writer - well why not - Text Block Writer which I havent tried yet but came across at this great blog here which it turns out is yours :-[ lol

I have no idea how to write an alias...

neither have I . .
I'd simply make another shortcut for Thunderbird, rename it to 'Mail' & place it somewhere that FARR looks

To my thinking, it should be the same bearing in mind any access to any other possible partition on the same drive will immediately negate any advantage gained in transfer rate.
But having a single 300GB partition on a 1-2TB drive seems like an awful waste of resources to me.

you could use the rest as backup (if you get a second drive) -
I have two hard-drives - I've started using the second partition on first drive (OS partition is only about 40gig) to backup important stuff from my second hard drive. Advantages are that it's hardly ever used (couple of times a day) - I hear a *lot* less hard-drive noise going on since I set things up like this - in fact I now hear hardly any which is nice :).
8088
If you only make a 300gig partition on a 1TB drive, I dunno if the LBA-limit trick is going to have any advantage, though smiley

I dont follow you there f0dder - are you saying making a 300gig partition wont be as good as the way they do it (or *will* be as good...)
[or neither maybe ? lol]

General Software Discussion / Re: Any XP users switching to Windows 7 yet?
« Last post by tomos on November 19, 2009, 08:58 AM »
OT (a bit) - what settings are people using for the XP VM? I'm at default, which assigns 512MB of RAM. Performance is not brisk!

I wonder how that ties in with the whole 32 vs 64-bit thing - i.e.
if on 32-bit OS, does that amount come out of the allocated 4GB memory?

I use ________, it allows not only to extract the correct id3 tags from a music file, but if it is missing it can download this information from the Internet. It can also find and download the sonds' lyrics and album covers.

dubious link there in original post ? (affiliate link I believe)

[edit] I was having a look at the app & clicked on the BUY link to see the price & noticed the word 'affiliate' in the url [/edit]

thanks Carol & 40 -
I was curious in general but also that I have some software that isnt being developed any more - those tips will help, & if not I can always have a go at setting up a virtual XP.

not the VM which will only work if you have Hyper V support in your CPU
are you talking about the Win7 virtual XP option - that's only in ultimate, isnt it? - I've read that you're as well off setting it up yourself anyways (in windows secrets I think)

as I've said already - after sales service is very important I think - but especially for laptops.

Would you people also recommend going the Dell HP etc route for laptops?

I see Oshyan recommends Toshiba laptops (for service & components), I've been looking at a MSi (CX 600) on special offer here next week - according to a google search they seem to have reasonable after-sales service. I've mentioned elsewhere that Acer has a very poor rep here (Germany) that way.

I have a couple of questions (more generic I guess)

Re software that works on XP - will it (probably) work on Windows 7 or will it have to have been specifically updated for 7 ?

My other question was about pros & cons of 32 & 64-bit OS's. But I think I got answers for that in this thread: How much trouble is a 64-bit OS right now? (I think 32 bit would suit me fine)

I agree that as-is is fine. As for rewording the menu, the user already can make the text say whatever he wants from within AnuVu's option dialog, and Notepad is the default

Opening many files in notepad windows is an unlikely desire, IMO. I believe that mass export into plaintext is on the todo list anyway, which will reach the same end, with the added benefit that they'll also be a little bit easier to read. In the meantime, 'export current view to file' mostly fulfills that desire anyway.

[...]
wow I had missed both of those :-[ editor of choice and export current view :-*

Not only that I had completely missed page 5 here including the latest update
wowee things to see :)

Soooo...which behaviour would you like?  Open highlighted?  Or open checked?

I'm easy - actually I think 'as is' is best - you might have many files showing in viewer but it only opens last selected in Notepad anyways.

I was just trying to think of a way to make it clear to new users - I guess something like Dr.Frog suggested might be clearer (in the menu) - "Open selected file in Notepad" (?)

EDIT: ... wait a sec, is it supposed to open checked files in an editor? I plumb forgot.

I'm afraid it is a confusing one - I thought of suggesting changing the menu entry too, but I think I initially thought the file was selected if it was ticked - so saying "Open selected with external editor" wouldnt have helped...
One to ponder!

PS: another 'icing' request - that single (left) mouse-click on systray icon would also popup the menu

I can make another general option that will let the user choose between single and double-clicking the tray icon.  Will that be acceptable?

that would be great - I find double clicking tray icons a very fussy business & mostly wish they would work like the quick launch icons, or at least respond in some way to a single click (!Campaign for Single Clicks!)
thanks :D
