Living Room / Re: Opinions on Netflix?
« Last post by Deozaan on August 28, 2008, 11:30 PM »
I used the Netflix trial for a month and was planning continue my subscription but I moved back to my hometown rather suddenly and am currently living with my parents, who already have Netflix, while I'm on the waiting list for apartments near the university here.

You should be warned that our productivity nearly dropped to zero during our trial period because we were getting so many movies and we were able to watch a lot of streaming movies. The selection of Watch Now isn't that great but if you're someone who doesn't often go to the cinema or rent a lot of movies (or watch TV) like I am then you probably have a lot of "catching up" to do. Also, my wife is a foreigner and hasn't grown up with all the movies I've seen throughout my life and loved, so most of the movies older than just a few years she's never seen.

Anyway, like I said, we were watching so many movies and TV shows that we didn't accomplish much during our trial period. My biggest complaints about the Netflix service have to do with the website, but perhaps I should mention that I don't have any method of streaming the videos to my TV so I can't share any opinion regarding that.

My biggest complaint about the service is that there was no way for me to say "Never show me a movie of this kind." In other words, I wish there were better filters for browsing through the available titles. For example, there was no way to completely remove the gay and lesbian films from the selection, or filter out movies based on their rating (my wife and I don't watch movies that are rated R). The lack of these filters or "parental controls" is very peculiar, considering almost any device these days that plays video (including TVs themselves!) have parental controls to block or filter what is shown based on content such as violence, language, sexual content, rating, etc.

Developer's Corner / Re: Best way to sync programming projects?
« Last post by Deozaan on August 28, 2008, 10:44 PM »
This is probably not a very efficient way to do it, but I use FileHamster for "version control" and Groove (from Microsoft Office 2007) for synchronization.

But yeah, SVN is the best way to do it. I just haven't taken the time to learn how to wrap my head around it entirely so I'm not using it yet.

Living Room / Re: Video chat: Why don't people like it?
« Last post by Deozaan on August 28, 2008, 10:22 PM »
I don't like video chat because when I'm on the internet, I like my relative anonymity.

The fact that you don't know what I look like or what my voice sounds like or how old I am is what I like so much about the internet. It seems to level the field and remove nearly all status and class. The only thing you can really judge someone by is their opinion and their writing skills.

When I have to speak to someone, generally I talk kind of slowly and I also take a long time to gather my thoughts. I like to know exactly what I'm going to say before I say it. So typing is a lot easier for me because it gives me the chance to think it through as I type it, read over it completely before I send it in IM or post it, and rewrite it if it comes out wrong. When speaking to someone vocally, you don't really have the luxury of any of those things without people becoming impatient or feeling pressured to respond quickly.

My answer is emphatically no!

I've had jobs where the computers used were exclusively Macs, but I would never (in the foreseeable future) trade in my PC for a Mac.

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: What May Happen in the Next 100 Years (Predictions from 1901)
« Last post by Deozaan on August 26, 2008, 02:08 PM »
I think it's great how we look on our past history and laugh at the silly concerns and predictions they had, at the height of their science and wisdom. But we don't stop to think of how silly all of our current concerns and predictions will seem to those who come after us next century.

Just in trying to apply that concept to modern times, it kind of makes me wonder how relevant some of our major concerns will even be in 100 years. Take global warming for example. A hundred years ago one of the bigger environmental concerns of the day was how they were going to clean up all the horse manure from the streets. Automobiles obviously were the "solution" to this problem, yet I don't think they were created and marketed as the manure solution. They were just naturally better and more capable than horses. This is just me thinking out loud, asking rhetorical questions, but will the scientific progress we naturally make as time goes on make global warming as obsolete a concern as the horse manure from 100 years ago? Like I said, it makes me wonder. . .

Sadly, I don't think lol-speak is what they had in mind when they imagined an improved English language.  :-\

Congratulations everyone! I must admit I'm a bit jealous this time!  :)

I'm currently using GarageGames' TorqueGameBuilder to work on a game. In fact, it was this very game that led me to that Percentages article I made.

So yeah, I have some experience with TorqueScript.

It's a lot like the WarioWare games, except even more weird and with no penalty for taking longer than 5 seconds.

« Last post by Deozaan on August 23, 2008, 02:15 PM »
Way too easy. Most of the time it's easier to just try to get the guy straight to the exit (through "juggling" him with bomb blasts) than it is to follow the method the creator seemed to think you should take. Levels that I guess were supposed to be hard because they gave me 20 bombs would only take 2 blasts and they'd be finished.

Kind of fun, but I think I prefer Asteroids of Orion for this type of gameplay. :)

Recommendation: Ban MySpace from your computers.

I'd already seen that wedding one some time ago, but didn't know about the others.

Kind of funny, but not really my type of humor, I guess.

Living Room / Re: using 2 mice - can I have different settings for each?
« Last post by Deozaan on August 21, 2008, 01:36 PM »
I wasn't sure if it would or not, I haven't used the software in a long time. Would there be some way that you could make an AHK program that would send the left mouse click when you physically right clicked, and vice verso

it would have to be able to differentiate between the two mouses which I suspect might be impossible but it would be great
Any takers out there ?? or ideas on the subject ??

Another idea would possibly be an AHK shortcut that would toggle the mouse settings to be lefty or righty.

The problem is I store many passwords on my laptop - passwords and other confidential data in word/excel files that provide access to my email accounts and other sites. I'm afraid of this falling into the hands of the TSA people.

I suggest you stop storing your passwords in Word/Excel and use something much better like fSekrit. Also, make sure you have a good passphrase. Even 1024-bit encryption would be practically useless without a good passphrase.

The worst imaginable pass phrase (eg, "this is my secret password") is many times more secure than an average single word password (eg, "god123"). And it's easier to remember.*

Sorry for reviving this old thing, but when when I was reading this thread it led me here, and when I read this thread in its entirety, I couldn't help but notice the discussion about Vista's update policy.

OK you place an order for cheaper XP on Monday at 23.59 - do you expect MS to cough up Vista at 00:00 Tuesday ?

The funny thing is that just today I was customizing a Lenovo laptop and they actually charged something like $40 more to "downgrade" from Vista Business Edition to XP.

Deo, your yard reminds me of the movie Over The Hedge. Wouldn't happen to have any furry raccoons in the area, would you? ;D

Not after that exterminator filled the backyard with exploding laser traps. How do you think those dry spots got there?

As far as I know, the answer is no. Unless you wanted to open up your mouse and change the wiring around on the inside.
Actually, I don't know why people just don't design left handed mice/mouses/mieces that way. I'm brilliant!  :graduate:

Thanks for the help, everyone.

The only way to make this little utility better would be if it didn't stop the screen saver from coming on. As long as it also didn't prevent it from turning off when the mouse was wiggled. :)
