General Software Discussion / Re: What the hell is OpenCandy?
« Last post by Renegade on March 30, 2011, 11:09 AM »
For what it's worth, Nod32 blocked 2 internet connections to OpenCandy when installing the latest Photo Resizer with OC.
Stopping the install of OCSetupHlp.dll and any other programs being offered.

Photo Resizer did install even with nod blocking the connection to OC.

Just for your info...

Thanks for that.

This is really a problem. AV vendors should be focusing on developing technologies that prevent the real bad guys and not this kind of silliness.

You'd think that it would be easy to make a dime... Literally. :(

And they also leave a great deal of the implementation 'details' to the software publishers as well. Which doesn't give me warm fuzzies if one or more of them are in the habit of 'pushing the envelope' so to speak.

There's not much to the implementation, and you can't really skirt around anything in it.

Basically, you put the DLL in your installer, and add a few lines to the install code. There's not much for you to customize.

The bigger worry is the software itself and not OpenCandy. Once you let someone run code on your computer, they can do ANYTHING they want. You don't need to use OpenCandy to do bad things.

General Software Discussion / Re: Advice on a [learning] JavaScript IDE?
« Last post by Renegade on March 29, 2011, 10:26 AM »
I can't speak to those, but over the years I've found JS editors to be very very far behind others. They should NOT expect Eclipse or NetBeans or VS quality. From what I've seen, JS editors are primitive.

However, I do hope to learn something from someone with more experience than me there. I would love to see a good JS editor! (I could also certainly use one!)

I don't know about multiple deals or whatever, but I will report my own experience:

Disappointed in NOD32

I've been submitting to Softpedia since they opened up, and this is the FIRST time that I've been rejected.

To be clear, this is a NOD32 issue, and not a wider issue. It's a false positive. NOD32 isn't quite up-to-date with things it seems.

I'm slowly changing over to Opera again. Firefox is simply a beast and is becoming unusable for me. Opera is just blisteringly fast, and I like that. A lot. :)

I have zero browser loyalty. I've used them all and it seems like they have good times and bad times. Well, IE usually has bad times, but that's another story. :P

I'm also finding Chrome is pretty sluggish. Well, in comparison to Opera anyways.

The chart was very interesting. I remember Safari coming out, trying it, and shelving it because it didn't do anything properly. Apple had buttons in the browser for people to report "broken sites". Hahahaha~! After all, Apple can do no wrong! :P

worstje got me hooked on watching these games -- i just think it's so cool that video games have evolved to a point where people now watch games and give commentary of the unfolding gameplay.. very cool stuff -- though be prepared to be absolutely confused beyond belief.

It's been on TV for a long time in Korea... and... get this... there is an entire channel that plays StarCraft 24/7.

I had to add another Sleep between the ^c and Clipboard get:

Yep, and that's exactly why I mentioned it.  The clipboard is a fickle beast and working with it can be a right pain in the arse.  I'm glad you got it working.   :D

In MS Excel if you repeatedly press CTRL + C it will tell you that another application has the clipboard and deny access with a warning. It just can't keep up with itself. Related odd fact.

General Software Discussion / Re: Can't wait for Flash to die!
« Last post by Renegade on March 28, 2011, 03:36 AM »
Flash would be better if Flash programmers would be a bit more conservative. "Oh, it works fine on my 666-core 2343242 GHz 423423 Peta bytes of RAM cluster of super computers... I don't know why it doesn't work for you..." It's not just Flash -- it's the people developing with it too. It seems like many developers seem to think that you only have 1 browser running with 1 tab and that they have your undivided attention all the time.

I've been having issues with Facebook and Flash lately. Sigh...  :-\

I'm always leary of throwing out a known PITA for an unknown new one.

From my experience, there's a bad tendency for one awkward, proprietary technology to be replaced by an even more awkward, bloated, and proprietary one. It's also interesting to note Apple is a stakeholder in the tech they want to replace Flash with. So I'm taking about 2/3 of Apple's arguments with a grain of salt.  Anything Apple doesn't own and control it tries to ridicule or litigate out of existence.

 :)

+1

I'm a bit scared that if Apple has anything to do with things, the web will get locked down with patents and DRM and restrictions and just plain hellish non-sense.

Turbo-Charging Robosoft with DynamicPAD (Part 1)

In this post I outline the basic problem that you need to overcome. In the next few posts, I'm going to post the solution.

You kind of need to read all of my posts on the topic to understand everything. It all goes to off-site SEO and how you can optimize that for your software. I don't repeat things, so if you're wondering "why" about certain things, check the other posts. They are all categorized under a few categories:

Is anyone of you (except Renegade, haha)  using an alternative Web Browser? I've tried Dolphin HD once but found it slow compared to the stock browser. I think what I miss most in the stock browser is better tab handling (although I'm obviously not using tabs as extensively as on a PC).

Actually, I installed Opera immediately, but had problems viewing pages. The default browser formatted them better for reading. With Opera, text was scrolling off to the side, which made it basically unusable. It might have been just a few sites doing that, but it was enough to drive me back to the default and forget about Opera.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Pre-launch of Super Simple
« Last post by Renegade on March 25, 2011, 11:30 PM »
I sucessfully managed to uniextract the installer. I have got the same set of files in Photo-Resizer-Setup\{app} folder as in your deployment list above. Beautiful icon, btw.

Maybe you want to tell your users that it requires .net 4.0 to run and that the installer will DL and install it on their system if not present.

Thank you! :)

The icon is by Sue Pichotta at Icons Icons from the Roma set.

While I would love to take credit for a lot of the artwork, I actually bought it all and modified most of it. (Planning a post on purchasing artwork later.) I think there might be a few things that are original works by myself (the Super Simple logo is), but not many. Most is modified artwork. I can edit, but can't really create artwork.

The requirements is a moronic oversight on my part. I keep remembering it, then forget to put it up on the site. Off to do that now...

BTW - How did you extract the setup file? I tried quickly with Universal Extractor, but it threw an error. I gave up at that point.

I We like that site, and the way you write about it here :D We'd seen SS already, ofcourse

Thanks! :)

I've got lots of juicy goodness planned and very much looking forward to getting it all up there. :)

looks "Super Simple" alright! will there be a super simple non-installer version be available for download?

Unfortunately no.

First reason, the deployment looks like this:

AssemblyLoader4x86.dll
Camera.ico
client.wyc
msvcp100.dll
msvcr100.dll
Photo Resizer.chm
PhotoResizer.exe
unins000.dat
unins000.exe
Uninstall.ico
wyUpdate.exe

Now, you could download the installer then extract it with something like Universal Extractor (checked - doesn't work -- the installer is signed so UE can't extract it), and you'd have that, and it would run, but you wouldn't get the registry entries for the Windows Explorer integration or any of the shortcuts. I'll be explaining what the deployment files are in future blog posts.

Second reason, having a second deployment would require too much explanation and complicate things too much. The entire idea is to simplify things as much as possible for the target audience so as not to confuse them. Multiple deployment options (other than EXE vs. ZIP) requires having additional explanations which clutter up the page, which is something I'm trying to avoid.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Pre-launch of Super Simple
« Last post by Renegade on March 24, 2011, 07:56 PM »
I'm happy to announce the pre-launch invitation and announcement for everyone at DonationCoder to "Super Simple"!

Super-Simple-Front-Page-Screenshot.jpg

The first application there is the oh so cleverly named "Photo Resizer".

Photo-Resizer-640x480.jpg

I've mentioned a site that I was working on in the past and this is it. It is ad supported and Photo Resizer uses OpenCandy (see below). Like I've said before, I will be making as much as possible about the site open and transparent. You can find some of that transparency on the FAQ page. I will be posting more about it over time at my personal blog, Cynic.me. I've started to post some things there already under the "Super Simple" category.

Most of the posts so far are about Robosoft and PAD, and more of that will be coming along with other aspects as well. Some posts will be more marketing-centric, while others are more programming-centric. I've mentioned some topics here.

SOME TRANSPARENCY FOR THE DC CROWD:

The following are some summaries of future posts for Cynic.me.

OPENCANDY:

I know that some people here are going to hate it because I used OpenCandy. That's fine. There's nothing malicious or devious in there. I did my homework on the topic and have a clean conscience. My irrationalities towards a computer company named after delicious fruit (that keeps the doctor away) are well known here. Everyone has things that drive them nuts. I will write in detail about OpenCandy in the future.

REGISTRY SETTINGS:

Photo Resizer gives you an option to add a right-click context menu item to Windows Explorer so that you can right-click on a picture and open it directly in Photo Resizer. Other than that, I do not use the registry at all. Any other entries are done by the system, such as "Recently opened documents" (or document history) which are stored in the registry. Those are system controlled by Windows. The context menu option is optional and is for the following supported extensions:

  • bmp
  • gif
  • jpeg
  • jpg
  • png
  • svg
  • tif
  • tiff

It looks like this:

Photo-Resizer-Context-Menu-Windows-Explorer.png

Photo Resizer does not take any file associations.

HELP:

While the program is simple enough, it includes a help file that is actually useful. (Thank you to mouser and DC for the H&M license~!) There are a lot of extra shortcuts in there.

The help file may seem long, but that is only because it is extensively illustrated with screenshots and illustrations.

TRACKING:

Photo Resizer keeps count of the number of photos that you have resized and the number of times that you have used it. None of that information is sent back or sent anywhere. YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON PRIVY TO THAT INFORMATION.

Part of the tracking is done using the Infralution Licensing System (ILS).

Why is it in there? (Make sure you can handle the truth...)

I got bored and thought it would be fun to look at statistics. Seriously. I've been using ILS for years, love it, and just thought stats would be fun. Incidentally, I went out for lunch the other week with the developer. We'd talked in the past, but it was nice to finally meet him.

The shortcut for stats is "s".

In the future, I may make it optional (as in opt-in) for people to send me stats so that I can improve the program. We'll see. Right now I'm thinking that there's a 20% chance of me doing that.

AUTOMATIC UPDATES:

There are no automatic updates. There is an automatic updater component in it, but it only checks to see if a new version is available. It does not install any new versions. The shortcut to check is "u".

Photo-Resizer-Updater.png

It checks once a week. It can be hidden by clicking on it. There is no option at the moment to turn it off. That will be in a future release.

HUMOR:

The "About" page is mostly humorous and makes fun of a few things, including the target audience and myself. :)

Well, I hope that about sums everything up and I do hope that it gets a positive response from people here.

Cheers,

Ryan

Rob zombie stuff is quite disturbing for me but it's fun sometimes.

I prefer psychological stuff in both horror and thriller movies, so that's why hostel was odd addition in that reply. lol. Some movies that i like - magnolia, sybil, A Clockwork Orange, Silk  (korean horror), gozu, shutter island etc.

You might like "Fallen". http://en.wikipedia....ki/Fallen_%28film%29

It is one of the best horror films I've ever seen. I've probably watched it between 50 and 100 times. Well, I play it rather often while working as background noise.

Wow. You all really use all that?

I've abandoned a lot of software because my carrier's network is so bad.

Well, you did choose arguably one of the most forked 3G networks in Australia :P

Lesson #1: Never, ever buy a locked mobile in Australia. (Or don't buy where you're locked into a contract.)
Lesson #2: The lower the frequency, the better the solid object penetration.

eg. Telstra: 850MHz everywhere + a lot more towers.
Optus/Vodafone: 900MHz Rural & 2100MHz Metro (Although they are starting to install 850MHz - bit late me thinks.)

Yeah... Vodafone sucks beyond comprehension. My phone isn't locked, but I have a contract. :( I wanted the HTC Desire HD, and that's all I could get.

But even when I'm outside, it's pathetic. Vodafone is really much worse than simply "bad". Not 3G, but 0G. Most data transmission is not 3G. Horribly miserable.

Live & learn I suppose.

video conferencing while driving

?!? :o ?!? ...That hardly seems wise...

I'm not sure whether he was driving or a passenger, but I know that he was testing it out to see how things worked and if they worked well. It went flawlessly for him.

But that's the thing -- If you have decent infrastructure where you live, your mobile experience is completely different. Here where I live it's like the dark ages in comparison. (I'm still very much frustrated by being spoiled with the best networking infrastructure in the world in Seoul -- anything else is a massive drop and the problems here are relatively well known.)

Wow. You all really use all that?

I've abandoned a lot of software because my carrier's network is so bad. It's just too painful to try using networked software. It's more like being in space - 0G instead of 3G. Loading a news article can sometimes take several minutes and is sometimes just futile. I've tried using Google Maps on my phone, and it's simply impossible. I could chart the land myself before a map loaded.

Sometimes network speeds are fast enough if I'm using Wi-Fi, but my ISP is similarly poor.

A friend of mine is a sys admin at Princeton and has used Skype on his phone for video conferencing while driving and said it worked well. I'm envious.
