thanks for the feedback cranio...

>For myself, I find that Tablets are fine for 'art', okay for the occasional quick (and crude) note/annotation, and inadequate for anything else.

I have to agree... Maybe is what you say especially true when the tablet is separate from the screen... Is yours an... actual Tablet PC though...? Because writing directly on the screen seems to me like it would actually be MUCH easier. At least one knows (should know?) exactly were he/she's writing! The problem though (in the case of a tablet PC) would be to be able to quickly switch between keyboard and tablet mode, which is what a Wacom tablet painlessly allows (IMO). But I don't own a tablet PC, so all this is mostly speculations.

Anyhow... I'll try to use my Wacom to make simple annotations on the scanned pages of my math workbook during the next class... Will see... Should be okay.  :tellme:

eheh, thanks guys
The tablet is going well. Haven't ordered a new palm yet. Will see if I can work without one for a little while.

Regarding Maths : Eóin is right, it's difficult to be beat paper and a pencil -- in terms of spead, of course.  :(

If you do use grub, you'll also want to be aware of the Super Grub Disk Project. This is an excellent tool for fixing grub problem as well as learning about how bootloaders operate.

Mainsite: http://www.supergrubdisk.org

Also check out AutoSuperGrubDisk. Fix grub from within Windows with the minimum amount of fuss.

Link to website here: http://www.supergrub...ki/AutoSuperGrubDisk

There is a nice introductory article (with screenshots) on Super Grub over at the BeginLinux.com website. Full article link:

I agree. I used SuperGrub a lot -- less lately because I don't have a Linux distro handy anymore (will soon, though -- just to test a few windows software under wine in the next Ubuntu release).

Now, why they don't all have "Evernote" checked is confusing to me.  They were all entered in the Evernote grid so they should have it checked automatically when the item is created.  Actually, I'm noticing that all the top level items have "Evernote" checked and the lower level items do not.
Now about the 80-something items that keep disappearing.  All except one do NOT have "Evernote" checked.  All these items were created in the Evernote grid.  I would have expected the default behavior is to have the grid name field checked when items are created in that grid.

Again, remember, I don't ever touch the source box or do anything with filters.
that is default behaviour - this way you get to see the parent items & can expand as you wish
I know Armando works differently but I can never keep up with him ;)
That is not surprising as Armando and I think alike on a lot of this stuff.  So, I don't see what's the point of having a show all subitems feature because there's already that little expand tick under the item bullet that hides/expands the subitems.  If I don't see the tick there, I assume there are no subitems.
It's confusing to me.  I understand if you want to hide items using the filters and stuff.  That makes sense, it's logical.  But this is confusing because the item is being hidden because it's a sub-item?  That's confusing to me.  When an item is created, I prefer the grid it's created in to be automatically checked.  It doesn't make sense to add an item to a database and then the item is not associated with any grid by default.  By default, all items should be associated with the grid it was created in.  If you don't like that behavior, then you can uncheck it later.  That makes more sense to me.

This is an interesting discussion... I'm running short on time but....

Yes, this is the default behavior.

I talked about this matter with Pierre quite a few times as I find this behavior unintuitive -- flat view should  show all items, even when subitems are not meeting the source. Because flat view doesn't show all items with the default settings (inheritance is off), i have to enable inheritance for all fields that are used as grids sources.

And so I think it would be better for "inheritance" to be the default setting for grid sources (at least the simple sources).

one of course  has to keep in mind that these "default behaviors" will have some consequences and so they have to be well thought of before they're implemented.

There were reasons for Pierre's initial choice... mainly influenced by Ecco's logic, IIRC; the problem is that SQLNotes is much more sophisticated, allows multiple parents, etc. so... Ecco's way is probably not the best. Pierre can comment on that if he wishes to.

So, like I said, I personally tend to enable inheritance for all fields which are used as grids sources -- with a few exception. The reasons are simple, I want to : 1- be able to see all items when Hierarchical view is off, 2- be able to filter in/out items from a grid more easily, 3- be able to trace more easily all the items contexts (grids) in which they're used (especially when they're used in different grids...), 4- be able to use the "quick add item" to send bits of data to my database, assigning different fields without destroying the logic in a grid (ie : all items in a grid ave the main Yes/NO field-source "ticked", not just a few here and there).

As for the "full hierarchy" mode, etc. I never ever use the normal (not full) hierarchy mode. I don't because items won't appear more than once (when they have multiple parents) in the hierarchy, and I have no use for such a function. I wonder if anybody does? In the end, I always use either the Full hierarchy mode, or "flat" mode.

I've lost 2 computers in the last 10 years -- same as you : theft, broke in my apartment...After that, I became obsessed with backup etc. It's not fun to loose data. I won't add any advice to what's already been expressed here... All I can say is that I feel your pain.

PS. : Actually, there'S one thing I always do now :  always leave a few lights on when I leave t he house (I know, I know, it's not ecologically that sound, but those aren't powerful lights) + music/radio. I once had a timer to switch music on and off, but not anymore. A friend working for an insurance company told me that music, noise, and lights are probably the best repellents -- complementing good locks, of course...

[very off-topic]on Wednesday, as I was teaching, a child jumped on my palm and broke it.  :'(
What was it doing on the floor? Good question. I was actually sitting beside it (we were all sitting in a circle), stood up for exactly 5s to pick my whistle (needed it for the workshop). Needless to say, when I heard "scrunch", it was to late for any foreclosing whistling.

So yesterday, alone, crying on the sidewalk... [/very off-topic]

[a bit less off-topic]...I went to the store and bought... a wacom tablet. Human psyche is -- of  course -- all about logic.
Anyhow. The tablet is nice and all... Not that easy at first (find it pretty hard to be precise when I'm hovering at 0.5cm of the surface and then right click without moving the pen!), but I'm slowly getting used to it.
[/a bit less off-topic]

[kindoff on topic]I think it's primary functions will be : annotating and drawing/writing  (math equations, of course, and other stuff) . And that's it. I use the keyboard to much to use it as a mouse, and I prefer the touch pad for that function as it's just 0.5 inch from the keyboard.
[/kindoff on topic]

[going slightly off topic again]Anyhow... - PDF-XChange Viewer is quite nice and, thanks Darwin, I forgot that foxit viewer had pretty much the same features. Don't know which one is the best. Will test.

In the mean time, I found that pretty cheap app, and working very well... : Meanders' Annotator for Microsoft Office (v1.62). Allows one to draw easily inside any office app : excel spread sheets, Word documents, etc. Could be handy. There might be others, even more powerful and working system wide (do they exist?) but I have a math class at 6, so need to go solve some nasty equations now... without my palm, but with a potentially convenient Wacom Bamboo tablet.  :D

Thanks for your research, Darwin. And, yes, PDF Annotator looks pretty sweet. Wonder how compatible the annotations are with other pdf readers. Will have to check that out.

I saw other (slightly different...) options like :

- PDF-XChange Viewer (pretty well known app here at DC... not sure if the free version will do the nice tablet things though -- haven't got the time to fully check that. Depending on the tablet level of compatibility, this could be the real deal.

- Bluebeam Revu Standard (seems VERY nice -- but some users here noted the bad quality of the fonts rendering. Don't know if that's still true )

Thanks f0dder.
OK...finally, after 4 successful backups... Hibernation does the same thing as standby. :(
Next step is now : cluster size, I guess... I have no idea why would that do something. But let's see.

So... Darwin : any luck with annotations using your fabulous wacom tablet?   :)
817
thanks mwb1100.

for now -- because I' running out of time -- I found a workaround : never go into standby mode and only use Windows hibernation feature. Kind of annoying since I have a laptop, but less annoying then having to reboot every time I want to fully backup certain system files, my Outlook PST files, etc.!

I found out that hibernating leaves VSS working correctly... Standby "kills" it. Weird. Could be a memory problem (???), but don't know enough to diagnose properly.

If I decided to go with a web-based solution, I'd feel safer if I were paying for the service. The Wiggio revenue stream is too dependent on entities other than it's actual users for me feel comfortable using it for business purposes.

I agree.
819
I guess I'm looking on some advices on cluster size. That's the only potential solution I foresee for now. Anyone knows from experience what will happen if I increase the cluster size of my partitions?
820
I'm progressing : I found that thread : http://www.petri.co....wthread.php?p=108265

am using Windows XP SP3.

I have just upgraded my system disk from 200GB to 1TB and cloned all the software to proportionately larger partitions.

Retrospect 7.5 was working fine until then. Now this appears.

A restart fixes the problem.

It looks like it must have something to do with the large number of clusters.

My error log event is identical:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: VolSnap
Event Category: None
Event ID: 20
Date: 6/10/2008
Time: 11:58:36 AM
User: N/A
Computer: KRELL
Description:
The shadow copy of volume G: was aborted because of a failed free space computation.

But there's no solution.
821
I think I found something which could be linked to my problem. Doesn't explain the standby thing though.  :(

When you try to create shadow copies on large volumes that have a small cluster size (for example, less than 4 kilobytes [KB]), or if you take snapshots of several very large volumes at the same time, the VSS software provider may use a larger paged pool memory allocation during the shadow copy creation than is required. If there is not sufficient paged pool memory available for the allocation, the shadow copy cannot complete and may cause the loss of all previous shadow copy tasks.

this is the error I get :

Event Type:   Error
Event Source:   VolSnap
Event Category:   None
Event ID:      20
Description:
The shadow copies of volume X: were aborted because of a failed free space computation.

http://support.micro...167&x=10&y=7

The problem is that the fix is for windows 2003 Server. I have XP home.

Anybody has ever experienced changing the cluster size of a partition?
Currently, I'm at 4kb, which doesn't seem too low...
822
Strangely, when I reboot it works : I'm able to backup opened files, and then, after resuming from standby, won't work again (stopping and restarting VSS won't work either - only reboot). I'll have to enquire.

That's because -- IIRC -- the "shown in" field tells you where the item is shown *currently*. If it's filtered out of all grids, it's nowhere.

>I just installed the portable version and it shuts down (crashes) every time I try to open the properties pane.

hmmmm.... someone reported the same thing in the SQLNotes forum. Doesn't happen here... weird...

[EDIT : ok... I'll let pierre handle this for today!  ;D]

[oups ... PIerre was quicker]

When that happens, it's usually just a filter thing.
It happens to me too, but it's usually because I messed with the filters.

1- Any error message when you open the grid?

2- Check your different filters : source (first text box on the source bar), filters  (second text box on the source bar), Date filter ("D"  on the source bar), Alphanumeric filter  ("A" on the source bar).  View>source bar, or alt-s

If your items don't meet the source/filter etc., they won't show.

What's in these filters
