General Software Discussion / Re: Webresearch
« Last post by cyberdiva on October 09, 2009, 01:34 PM »
I have tried all these and still of no avail.  Would appreciate any help on this.
Hi.  Have you tried contacting Webresearch tech support?  I had occasion to write to them a few months ago, and I got a prompt and helpful response.  The address I used was simply [email protected] .

Get thee to eBay and snipe yourself an HP LaserJet 5. This model was the last of the business LaserJet models that HP produced before they started cost-cutting on manufacturing and playing the "Let's screw with the amount of toner we'll put in a cartridge" game.
I don't know whether the HP LaserJet 5P is different from the 5, but I had a 5P for about 12 years.  It was a workhorse, I bought a cartridge for it about once a year, and I loved it.  Earlier this year it finally gave up the ghost.  I thought at first that I would buy a color laser printer to replace it, since color was the only thing I missed on the 5P, but after comparing speed, cost, etc., I decided to buy a Samsung monochrone laser printer, model 2851 ND.  So far, I'm loving it even more than the HP.  It's considerably faster (though the HP was pretty fast) and can do 2-sided printing very easily and quickly.  I'm still using the cartridge that came with it, though it's claiming it wants to be replaced.  I just shake it a bit and it's good to go.  For $194.99, I'm very pleased.

To be honest, I don't think it's made as durably as the HP, but so far that hasn't been an issue.

General Software Discussion / Re: How can I download or record streaming audio
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 19, 2009, 05:40 PM »
@ cyberdiva, I don't think you should worry ;-) Though the many "run-once" did not happen to me; I am pretty sure it (also) has to do with the drivers the program must install, in order to handle the audio. If you check your Sound > Play settings, you should notice a new driver, probably named WsAudio Device.
You're probably right, Curt, but my motto on software freebies is "when in doubt, take it out."  So, as I said, I uninstalled it.  The fact that I didn't really need it may have helped.
Could it be that it was the one and same "run once" file you were allowing over and over, but it was repeatedly rejected by WinPatrol or some other security related program? I would guess so.
I don't think so.  WinPatrol won't reject a file unless I tell it to.  It always asks.  And the first four or five times (at least), I said yes.  I can't say for sure that it wasn't the same file each time, but I don't think so.  So I don't think WinPatrol would have rejected it until I started saying no.  And all the pop-up windows were WinPatrol's standard notification seeking permission for run-once files, so I don't think any other security program was involved.

I suppose I could try installing it again and see whether the same thing happens, but I think I'll get a life instead.  ;D

Giveaway of ToDay - Wondershare Streaming Audio Recorder
I saw this on the GOTD site earlier today and decided to give it a try.  I downloaded and started to install it.  WinPatrol PLUS kept informing me that the program wanted to install "run-once" files in the start menu.  Fine, said I, to the first one.  And the second.  And the third.  And the fourth.  I began to get antsy when there were more and more announcements from WinPatrol about run-once files.  Normally, I find there are usually just one or two.  My guess is that there were close to twenty--I didn't count, and after a while, I didn't permit their installation.  As soon as the installation was over, I used Revo to uninstall the program.  Perhaps there was no reason to be concerned, but I just didn't like an installation so different from any other I can recall (and as a software nut, I install programs all the time  :) ).

I guess I'll continue to use Audacity and Spider Player for my audio recording needs.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to migrate Palm T3 to Vista?
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 18, 2009, 05:04 PM »
In case Hirudin's suggestion doesn't do the trick, you might try the Brighthand forums.  There's one specifically for the Tungsten T series, including the T3.  I have no experience with that forum, but I've found the TX forum there invaluable.  I think the URL is http://forum.brighthand.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1076, but if that doesn't work, back up to Palm --> Older Palm Units --> and find the Tungsten T series.

Good luck!

Thanks, Miles, for this find.  It looks really interesting.  I've now downloaded it and hope to try it out soon.

General Software Discussion / Re: How To Type Symbols and more
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 14, 2009, 07:29 PM »
There's a terrific little free program called AllChars that I used to use on my laptop to type French and Spanish characters, since it's a bit of a hassle to set my laptop up to use certain keys as a numeric keypad. (A numeric keypad is needed for the ALT+4 method, which I use on my desktop.)  With AllChars, you hit and release the CTL key and then type 'e to produce é, while hitting the CTL key and then ?? will yield ¿, etc.  For some reason, I'm now having trouble getting AllChars to work, but most people have no problem with it.  It's free, open source, and quite easy to learn.  It is now under the aegis of SourceForge, who are more or less continuing development.  For more information or to download, see http://allchars.zwolnet.com/.

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you touch-type or hunt-and-peck?
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 14, 2009, 08:17 AM »
I took a summer school typing class many years ago when I was in high school.  I've always been glad that I did.  I touch type pretty quickly, and I can type just as well on someone else's keyboard as on my own--a definite advantage over depending on text expanders and macros, I think.  I don't know about kids today--with their heavy use of texting with just their thumbs, etc., I don't know whether they'd find touch typing so useful.  But at least at present, I don't think they can text their term papers and reports  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Will Win7 last as long as XP?

1) They aren't firewall applications - they are AV applications ;)
2) Avast is free for home use, NOD32 isn't
Thanks, Carol, for your response.  I don't know where my brain was when I wrote that last message.  I'm well aware that AVAST and NOD32 are AV apps, not firewalls--why I wrote "firewall" is a mystery.  Then again, lots about my so-called mind is a mystery  :-[ .

So am I right in interpreting what you've said as 'NOD32 is probably better than AVAST, but you'd have to pay for NOD32, so let your company pay for it at work and use AVAST at home because it's pretty good and free'?

Just use a very low impact AV solution such as AVAST for home use or NOD32 for the office.
This seems to be my day for asking questions.  Carol, can you tell me why you would recommend a different firewall for home use than for the office?  Is there much difference between AVAST and NOD32 other than the fact that AVAST has a free version whereas NOD32 does not?

What?  You mean I shouldn't have put olsentwins.nude.sexy.exe in my trusted programs list so my firewall would stop asking me about it?  :D  Seriously, though I can see your point, I'm not sure I agree that all is lost as soon as you've got malware on your system.  If it's trying to send information out and the firewall prevents it from doing so AND alerts you to the fact that something is trying to do so, you can work on getting rid of the malware before it succeeds in sending out info.

Anyway, thanks for your quick response.  You've definitely given me something to think about.

3rd party software firewalls are superfluous since XP SP2, and UAC means that I don't have to bother with running antivirus software - and it's a lot less of a hassle than running a Limited User Account on pre-Vista NT systems.
f0dder, can you say a bit more about this?  From time to time I read anti-malware forums where people running WinXP with SP2 and SP3 and Vista are seeking help after getting all sorts of viruses.  It hasn't happened to me, so I can't comment directly, but I've never before heard anyone claim that WinXP with SP2 or 3 eliminates the need for a software firewall, nor that Vista users don't have to bother with AV software.  Have I misunderstood you?

Keep in mind that Win7 isn't that different from Vista.
Thanks, f0dder.  I realize that, but from what I've seen so far, people seem much happier with W7 than with Vista.  Since I'm still running XP Pro, I don't have direct experience with Vista, but my impression is that at least some of the aspects of Vista that bother people have been changed/eliminated in W7.  At least I hope so.  :)

a) I plan to wait until some of the usual startup bugs are eliminated and then buy a new computer with Windows7 preinstalled.
b) My crystal ball is in the shop
c) See a).  I also hope to buy a netbook with Windows7 -  I'm eager for a netbook but want to get one with an operating system that will be around and supported for a while.  Seems silly to buy one with XP at this point, and I don't want Vista.

Found Deals and Discounts / WinPatrol PLUS $10 off through end of September
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 06, 2009, 09:39 PM »
Bill Pytlovany, the developer of WinPatrol, has announced a "back to school" offer of $10 off on WinPatrol PLUS, which normally sells for $29.95.  He says explicitly that you don't have to be a student to take advantage of the offer, which runs through the end of September.  More details can be found on his blog at http://billpstudios.blogspot.com/2009/09/winpatrol-plus-back-to-school-special.html

WinPatrol is a terrific program for monitoring your computer. It will warn you of any changes made to your system (e.g., if a program adds itself to your startup menu or tries to modify your HOSTS file), and you can approve or reject the changes. You can also use WinPatrol to see and control what programs are already scheduled to start when you turn on your computer, what programs are currently running, and a lot more. WinPatrol comes in a free version, but I'd recommend taking advantage of the above offer for the PLUS version, which offers real-time detection of newly-installed programs and a huge database of easy-to-understand information about the files it detects. The developer provides very prompt and helpful responses to questions, as well as a guarantee that once you pay for the PLUS version, all upgrades are free: you never have to pay for new versions. I bought WinPatrol PLUS several years ago after reading the unanimously glowing reviews of the Neat Net Tricks Software Review Panel, and I've been delighted with it. Available for all versions of Windows from Windows 98 through Windows 7, including x64 systems.

Found Deals and Discounts / ClipMate at $19.95 on BitsduJour today - Sept. 4
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 04, 2009, 07:53 AM »
BitsduJour is offering the fantastic clipboard manager ClipMate for $19.95 today.  That's 43% off the normal price.  I've used ClipMate for many years--it's probably the piece of software I use most and can least do without.  I tried it after someone said to me, "Once you try it, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it."  She was right.

Living Room / Re: PC-Centric to PDA-Centric... Thoughts?
« Last post by cyberdiva on August 30, 2009, 04:27 PM »
I'm both PDA-centric (PalmTX) and PC-centric.  Guess that makes me an ellipse  :) .  When I'm at home, I'm definitely PC-centric.  Why would I want to use a 4" screen when I can use one that's 19"?  But when I'm out, my TX is always with me.  It has my datebook, calendar, contacts, dictionaries (French-English, German-English, and Spanish-English), my Scrabble and BlackJack games, and lots more.  Of course, if there's free wi-fi, the TX also lets me read my email and surf the Web.  And for long airplane rides, I've put some full-length movies on my TX.

I suspect that eventually the TX will give way to a netbook, but I'm waiting until Windows 7 is out and battery life is even more extended than it is now.

Yes, I use my printer every day and still print as much as I did in years past.  I usually prefer being able to read instructions, user manuals, etc. in print while I'm trying to deal with what it's telling me to do on the computer.  I also like being able to take the printout and read it anywhere--it's a lot easier to carry a few sheets of paper than to lug a laptop (and most of the time I'm using my desktop, which I can't lug at all).
819
FWIW, I decided not to use SiteAdvisor quite a while ago for exactly this reason--the time lag in making needed changes was/is so long that it renders the judgments all but useless.

Like Mouser, I really like UltraEdit.  For years, I went back and forth between Boxer and UltraEdit as my favorite text editor, but UltraEdit finally won out.  I'm still using version 14, having seen no reason to pay $ to move to version 15.  And I also second Mouser's views on Beyond Compare for comparing files and Eraser for deleting them securely.  Still, if you don't already use UltraEdit and want to buy it, the BduJ offer seems to me very attractive.

There's probably better ways of doing it but for now this works no matter which browser I start with.
With FF's OperaView extension, just right-click and select "View this Page in Opera."
822
I have released a new version of OperaView (0.7) which works with Firefox 3.5.x.
Download it from http://operaview.mozdev.org/ or https://addons.mozil.../firefox/addon/1190/
This is great news!!  Thanks so much!  I've now downloaded and installed the new version, and it works perfectly.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: £ on a non-uk keyboard
« Last post by cyberdiva on August 16, 2009, 10:39 AM »
If your keyboard has a numeric keypad, wouldn't it be just as easy to hold down the ALT key and press 0163?  This is the method I use all the time, not just for £ and € but also for non-English characters such as é, ü, ¿, and ç.

We're doing lengthy QA on our products, websites and other things here. We're always looking for people to look with "critical eye" and "severe fault-finding".

It would be helpful if you mentioned what your products, websites, etc. are.  That way, people can judge whether they're interested and qualified to make a knowledgeable assessment.

Mouser, these videocasts are wonderful!  As you probably know, I'm a big fan of HyperSnap, but your videos made me download Screenshot Captor.  I don't expect it to replace HyperSnap for me, but SC has such an immense wealth of features that I'm sure I'll use it as well.  Especially since you've demonstrated so clearly how they work.

I can't wait for the FARR videos!

Many thanks for all you do!
