Living Room / Re: What's the best registry cleaner? Ask Leo says: none
« Last post by Darwin on January 31, 2010, 10:59 AM »
If you religiously monitor each installation with tools like Ashampoo Uninstaller or Total Uninstaller, you can easily wipe out everything that gets installed, including registry entries. I use Ashampoo and try to monitor each new installation.

Not a panacea in my experience - often applications build dependencies based upon the order in which things were installed (which is why sometime trying to uninstall an MS hotfix will wran you that it could break a specific list of applications that were installed after the Hotfix). The trouble with AU and TU is that they are blunt tools...

I'm about five months late responding to this, but what the heck: I actually use Ashampoo Uninstaller to monitor the installation of software which I'm not sure that I am going to keep. I uninstall applications using Windows built-in removal feature or by going to the program's folder and directly running its "uninstall.exe" file. Usually, this is all I need to do. If I have subsequent problems - recalcitrant shell menu entries, for example - I can then view the Ashampoo Uninstaller file. This will list all of the changes made to the registry, and serves to guide me to entries specific to that application. This makes it easy to identify keys associated with whatever problem I am trying to sovle, almost invariably either orphaned context/shell menu entries or file extension assignments, so that I don't have search through my entire registry. Beyond this, I tend to ignore orphaned registry entries. I don't much care if there are keys left behind if they don't impair the operation of Windows or other software that is still on the computer.

I totally agree with Carol, though: I no longer use Ashampoo Uninstaller to uninstall anything, for all of the reasons Carol detailed. I did want to point out the utility of being able to track changes that a software installation makes to your system, though. Ashampoo Uinstaller allows me to target specific changes and make corrections. I don't, however, advocate using it as intended, which can lead to serious problems. Of course, there are free alternatives out there, I *think*, that provide similar functionality.

EDITED for clarity... (success?!).

Just to add, I agree with cmpm. Technically savvy individuals may benefit from using a registry cleaner, but only if they have the time, patience, and knowledge to wade through all of the "fixes" that a registry cleaner recommends. For myself, the kind of problems that I want to solve that involve the regisry can be solved by editing the registry myself or by using an application like Nirsoft's ShellEx or ShellMenu View. Under Vista and Windows 7 (and problably XP, for that matter, but I no longer remember), I've yet to see a problem that I can trace to registry BEYOND shell menu entries getting left behind after uninstalling an application (and hence the Nirsoft software's utility to me). Beyond that, the registry "just works".

YMMV

Heh, heh - nice catch, Bamse. I took the troll's bait!  ;D

Wuz, respectfully, I disagree. Registry Cleaners cause more problems than they are worth, in my experience. For this reason, the vast majority of computer users today that you identify as being computer illiterate are the last group of people that should go anywhere near a registry cleaner.

I can't see why it would be impossible to have synonyms in HTML so that both color and colour are equivalent. That way people who learn English can use HTML without irritation and the Americans can carry on getting it wrong!

Which is why I said ...

Whilst I agree with the premise that the support sucked ....

But then you went on to say:

Maybe the developer of "beta of Spell Catcher Plus" should be informed that the product should not work on passwords!! That's where the problem actually arose so why blame RoboForm.

I gather your point was that I was too hasty in contacting Robofrm with this probelm and should have troubleshot my system first?  Fair enough... I did feel foolish when I realized the source of the problem and immediately wrote both to Spell Catcher, to inform them of the problem, and to Roboform support with a mea culpa.

This was one of those "perfect storm" events that occurred right ater a windows update, an IE 8 update, AND a Roboform update. Robofrom was the offending product WRT bizarre behaviour and I contacted them. Didn't I pay for that privilege? The fact that the problem traced back to a different company's beta that I'm running doesn't absolve them of having provided some initially lousy suggestions, given the information that I provided them with from the outset.

However, overall your points were spot on.

Blanking out the name of the support person is fair, but IMHO mentioning the name of the product is in order - after all, it's their support policy causing such a mess, and definitely something to warn other users (or potential users) of :)

Agreed. Roboform. ROBOFORM!

Call us with your password and we will enter if for you with our Virtual Administrator Keyboard.
This one ... I just can't stop laughing !  ;D

Ha, ha! Thanks for bumping that one - I missd it  ;D

@f0dder - I am a weenie! I'm not sure why I blanked out both the tech support person's name and the product name - it didn't seem "fair" or "right" somehow to publicize either bit of information while the support request was open.

At any rate, the second support person asked me to try Roboform in a second brower. I had already done this, but tried it anyway and the first thing that happened was that I  got a pop-up from the beta of Spell Catcher Plus that I am running asking me to correct the spelling of the password and it hit me. Spell Catcher Plus intercepts key strokes and analyzes spelling. As soon as I turned off Spell Catcher Plus I had no trouble entering passwords via the physical keyboard. I've subsequently discovered thast the issue only occurs if I hit the ENTER key, when I click the OK button all is well...

Still, the original support person should have READ my description of the problem. 4wd is right: I should have given them a brief, numbered list at the outset, rather than a rambling - albeit short -paragraph. Doesn't excuse the original tech person's insistence on following a particular line of inquiry long after I made it clear that it was a dead end...

What an unfortunate acronym! I assume POS actually means Point of Service? Or perhaps Point of Sale? Not Piece of ...?!

OK just read the OP more carefully: POS stands for Point of Sale. My other point stands, though  :o

OK, I need a sanity check here. Below is the text of an open support dialog that I have started with tech support for a well-known password manager. I'm going to let the text speak for itself (note: it is in reverse order - my original message appears at the end)...

You wrote (2010/01/28 04:25 pm EST)

Yes, the CAPS lock is off, as noted in my original message. To summarize:

1. Passwords are rejected when typed into the Master password field using either of the physical keyboards available to me.
2. I have confirmed that both keyboards DO work AND that I can type in the Master Password field)..
3. Caps are not turned on
4. Passwords entered via virutal keyboard ARE accepted.

******replied (2010/01/28 04:06 pm EST)

Thank you for your message.
Please make sure that Caps lock is off. The Password is case sensitive.

You wrote (2010/01/28 03:11 pm EST)

Yes! I am aware of the button to the right of the password field and its use for toggling the virtual keyboard on and off. Enabling/disabling the virtual keyboard is not an issue. The issue is that ******* will not accept passwords entered using a physical (ie REAL) keyboard.

****** replied (2010/01/28 01:52 pm EST)

Thank you for your message.
You can toggle on or off by clicking the button to the right of the field where the master password is entered.

You wrote (2010/01/28 01:43 pm EST)

Thank you for your reply,******. However, I am not clear on what you are trying to tell me! I am using the virtual keyboard now but would like to use a real keyboard, which is how I have entered the master password for the past 7 or 8 years.

I had also meant to ask if this is a known bug/conflict/issue? If it is, fine, if not I can keep troubleshooting it from my end.

Cheers,

Mike

Thank you for your message.

KEYBOARD:

This is called the "Virtual Keyboard" which you can toggle by clicking the button to the right of the field where the master password is entered.

You wrote (2010/01/28 10:52 am EST)

After upgrading to 6.9.98 AND patchined IE8 this week on a system running Windows 7 64-bit, I am no longer able to enter my Master password successfully via the physical keyboard - I have to use the virtual one. Caps are NOT locked and I have tried two different keyboards (one wireless with fresh batteries and the other the built-in notebook keyboard). In other respects, the keyboards work flawlessly. If I try to enter my password via a physical keyboard, ******* tells me that the password entered cannot open *******. If I keep trying, after the fifth or sixth attempt it will work; I find it quicker to simply use the virtual keyboard.

EDIT: cleaned up the quote formatting (?)

If they lower the prices, they (probably) have a good reason for that. v10, hm. Maybe released with some serious price increasement.  :P

Well, believe it or not, Dopus is far from being the most expensive file manager out there. Check out the prices of PentaWare's offerings...

at that price, if it's good software, buying 5 licenses wouldn't be too expensive, anyway

My thinking as well! However, there is a "one license" per customer limit, which is fair enough.

Hmm... didn't know about the family license. I'll look into that. Either way, I'm down for a 99 cent license - I'd be crazy not to! FWIW, my mum just got a netbook so I can always use the second license there.

Living Room / Re: I hate Valentine's Day!
« Last post by Darwin on January 24, 2010, 08:44 AM »
I lived in US (New England) for a year with an american family - on valentines day they made cards (no bought cards!) for parents & grandparents (& possibly for friends as well - it was years ago so no longer 100% sure) - I thought it was really nice & presumed it was typical for over there, but reading this thread that doesn't seem to be the case...

Can't speak for the US... Oh crap, who am I kidding? I can - we're inundated with American advertising and television - ANY holiday, on either side of the border, is crass, commercial, devoid of its original context... Valentine's cards, candy, and advertising were in the stores here (western Canada) by the first week of January. The two biggies, though, are Christmas and Easter.
