+1 for GetDataBack as well, it saved my photo collection from a broken external HDD a while back.

General Software Discussion / Re: Will facebook ever be the same?
« Last post by Jibz on July 14, 2011, 04:34 AM »
I can see the profile info including the About page plus all the posts made; I can also click on the people in their Circles - and do the same with their pages...and the people in their Circles...

Is all that info out in public by design or can you elect to restrict who can see it?

I was under the impression that stuff was only available to G+ members and was restricted to those who were in your Circles.

Like rgdot said, the profiles are public, so you can always see people. The posts you can see are any posts that person chose to share as public, that is posts that are shared with anyone. The same goes for the information on the profile, you will see what pieces of information the person has chosen to share with everybody (except for name and gender which are currently required to be public).

For instance, if you go to my profile you will only see a single post there, which is certainly not because I haven't written quite a few, but because that is the only shared as public. In the same way, if you were in my family circle you would see my address on the about page.

Showing who is in your network and who has you in their network is optional, I figured showing who has me in their network could help identify me and find others in the current phase, whereas I chose not to show publicly who are in my circles.

To clarify... I don't know the proper "circle etiquette" (having just got there), so I don't want to just start adding names I recognize blindly and end up looking like some weirdo stalker.

I think part of the beauty here is that adding someone to your circle can mean different things. If your favorite actor was on G+ you could add him to you 'Following' circle to be able to keep up with any news on his profile, even though it's probably unlikely he would follow you back .. here it works much like following someone on twitter. On the other hand you could add your college buddies to your 'College' circle and they will (hopefully) follow you also, and then it works like being friends on Facebook.

In other words, at the moment I wouldn't be too worried about making a DonationCoder circle and adding whoever you find from DC to that. Other than a sharp increase in posts on your stream nobody will be offended I'm sure .

Anyone want to go in on a 2-pack together and get it for a huge discount of $22.50 (each copy)?

Aww, I should have checked DonationCoder first, just bought a single copy 5 minutes ago :-[.

Your name, your gender, and your profile photo are visible to anyone. Other than that it seems like every piece of information on your profile can be limited to specific circles, specific people, or only you. In the same way, posts you make can be limited to any combination of your circles and/or specific people.

« Last post by Jibz on July 07, 2011, 03:52 PM »
Well that sucks, I really don't want to use my real name online. Nor will I (it's boring). Sure the G+ thing is a bit tempting to try - for the hell of it - Mainly because I completely ignored the last 500 fads... But I'll not be signing up with anything close to what it says on my drivers license.

I used to be very concerned about stuff like people on the internet knowing my real name as well, so I have a lot of understanding for that desire. I guess I have just slowly come to the point where I don't really think it matters that much in the end.

Sure, potentially some nasty people could use the information for doing nasty stuff, but what are the odds anyway unless you are some well knows public character. Are they high enough that it is worth cutting yourself off from all the benefits?

And also, for most people it really isn't that hard to find out if you have google, whois, and the web archive at your hands.

It seems nice, but the lack of syntax highlighting makes the light version useless for anything but plain text imho.

I've been seeing the black bar for a few days now, even before I got into G+. But now that I have G+ it now shows more G+ related stuff.

Weird thing was that the G+ bar in Gmail didn't show up until about a day after I was accepted into G+.

And for anyone interested, here's a link to my G+ profile.

Challenge: Make a post with more "G+" in it! :D

Well Goobook has something sticky and slimy to it commanding cautiousness.

FaceBoogle? :D

I am loving what I have seen of G+ so far btw, a lot of the ways they did things is how I wish FB would have worked, like the circles for instance.

I'm still attempting to use my loophole and it seems to be working *sometimes*.

Maybe it's limited to certain countries or something? .. still no luck for me sadly ;D.

Now it's $5 or $10 for the Collector's edition:

Or, if you live in Europe, it's on sale for €12 and €17 respectively, which is ~2.5x the US price >:(.

Attempted sending out 2 invites again. Ren, Jibz, let me know if either of you get an email. Note: ironically my legitimate Google+ invite earlier today ended up in my Gmail spam folder! So be sure to check there. ;)

Nothing yet, will check a bit later :).

There was some updates waiting to install yesterday when I was shutting down, the first one took about 15-20 min to install which I found very odd, but in the end it moved through and closed down.

Jibz, I made the logo clickable after your initial post (but before seeing it, I got the same suggestion elsewhere), so you were not imagining things.

Ok, good to know .

I would probably make the bvckup logo on the first screen perform the scroll as well. Clicking that was the first thing I tried before finding the tiny info button at the bottom. It appears to be doing that now, didn't seem to work on my first visit :-[.

And I agree, while getting from the first to the second screen may be logical, you have to notice the scroll bar isn't at the bottom to know there is more pages below the second.

Still like the nice clean feel to it.

So I gave up. Now I use Softmaker Office and I'm perfectly happy with it. Especially now that it's multiplatform and comes in a piquant penguin flavor. I like it enough that it's replaced Libre as my 'go to' NIX wordprocessor.

Got the 2008 version for free. Liked it so much I bought the 2010 version, which was offered at very generous discount. (And I bought it despite the fact I already have a license for 10 copies of Office 2010)

Same here. After their very generous offer to upgrade the free version of 2008 to 2010, I ended up uninstalling Office and am now using SoftMaker instead.

It doesn't have quite all the fancy stuff, but it's enough for my use, and it feels a lot faster. I only wish they made a Danish localization (there's dictionaries and all, but the application is in English).

In the end, the beast was tamed, and I managed to wrestle a well-formatted pdf out of it.  It did require completely uninstalling Office 2010 from her laptop and reinstalling 2007, but it is done.

So, basically the doc format is so obscure that even Microsoft can't read it? :D

My sympathies, I've had some fights with Word in the past involving inserting blank lines in obscure point sizes to get sections to not jump around randomly.

On a related note, any other Surfulater users having trouble with the Chrome plugin? It seems to randomly disappear and I have to reinstall it .

I was a little surprised not to see doPDF on the list, but I guess it does not provide some of the "essential features" like merging, watermarking and encryption, which are in the commercial version.

I chose doPDF because it seemed like a professional application, it handled all the fonts and graphics I tried well, and it produced relatively small pdf files -- but as he says

Of course, different people need different functionality so the division between ‘essential’ and ‘optional’ can be debated.

I use CintaNotes for fast clips of short bits of text because it is so fast and convenient. For larger articles and stuff that includes images and formatting I use Surfulater.

I know it's not free, but XYplorer is the fastest file manager I've tried.  Actually, the real fastest would be total commander, but it's interface is not very "normal".  For the normal ones, xyplorer is the fastest for me.  Still, I'm using Dopus 90% of the time.  it's slower, but geez, is there anything it can't do?

One of the things that gives slowdowns on my system is retrieving icons from files, especially getting the icon from executables that are signed gives a noticeable slowdown. XYplorer has the big problem here that it is single-threaded, so whenever I enter a folder with such files, like for instance downloaded installers, XYplorer more or less locks up and becomes unusable (I have reported this).

I know I could switch it to use generic icons to solve this, but I kind of like having the right icons on files, plus it works fine in Total Commander and Directory Opus.

I find it odd that a new guide teaches people python 2, I would have imagined it would make more sense to get new programmers to adopt python 3?
