General Software Discussion / Re: The Best Of: text editors

wraith808: huh? Notepad++ on large files? Because of scintilla, it's one of the editors that tend to barf once you try opening something not even remotely huge.

I have had Notepad++ grind to a halt on a largish XML file which Programmer's Notepad, also based on Scintilla, handled perfectly. Both had syntax highlighting enabled but perhaps Notepad++ was doing more in the background too. Whatever the reason it did turn me off Notepad++

Possibly pure ignorance here, but would simply having two routers plus some thing else with DHCP (switch / adsl / wired router) not work. I mean two wireless routers, one in each house, neither with DHCP turned on. From their WAN ports connect them to a regular wired router which would have it's DHCP turned on. Then everyone connected to one wireless router can still see everyone connected to the other because they're all actually behind the same NAT.

It could probably be gotten to work with just the two wireless routers. One would have DHCP on and the other's WAN port would connect to a regular LAN port on the DHCP wireless router.

Ha ha, Shades I was just about to mention Syndicate myself. Definitely the worst game ending I've ever seen.

I guess I'm somewhat comfortable with the idea that it may all be random, but we do not have an explanation of the level below what we've observed thus far to know for sure it's truly random. It will be interesting to see if these things get explained in our lifetimes. Otherwise I'm inclined to agree with you that his new kind of science isn't all that new.

Anyhoo, not the most on-topic of discussion :)

Mouser, not wanting to really get into a debate, I'm not particularly convinced by his work either. But the 'new kind of science' is about applying cellular automata to the very microscopic; to quantum theory and the most fundamental of the currently know particles.

Down there the world is exclusively random! The predictability of the macroscopic world stems from the idea that the interactions compound the randomness so much that you end up with chances that the 'weirdness' being seen on our scale drops so low as to makes such things unlikely to occur even but once in the lifetime of the entire universe. Though experiments have been devised to make such events observable, and they've succeeded.

My understanding is not that emergent behaviour is new, but that Wolframs research is it's attempt to provide an alternative theory of that world to say String Theory and the other lesser know theories.

General Software Discussion / Re: What the hell is OpenCandy?

To me, putting ads or recommendations or surverys or whatever on an application *installer* that i use only once, is one of the least bothersome things i've heard

Same here

I remember hearing a well argued case (but don't have original source) which suggested companies face fines in cases were very dodgy software leads to serious loss of money. Say an OS being compromised or a backup solution failing. Of course was intended exclusively for the big companies. I.e. in paying money you deserve some guarantees.

Anyway the great thing about Europe, is that usually two idiots won't get anywhere.

Eóin, I try to live an ad free life, to me %98 of ads on the planet  are obnoxious and waste of resources in my personal view, And spam is a way of delivering those obnoxious ads. Because ads are everywhere does not make "ads everywhere" a justified issue. Ads are everywhere because many people figured out "bogus" ways to make money, like putting banners on highway, buildings, times square, and noone questioned their acts.
-kartal

Things can definitely go too far, an example: here in Ireland a number of vehicles have appeared which drive around towns and cities aimlessly carrying banner ads. To me that is a step too far as the ads are having a tangible negative impact; they add to our already serious traffic problems. Also it's unsustainable- it works only because a small number of ignoramuses with hard enough necks decided go ahead, if more follow suit then governments and legislation will no doubt have to step in.

That is the sort of behaviour I dislike, people abusing a loophole that exists only because no one previously had the thoughtlessness or selfishness to take advantage of it before.

But there is another side, ads can be beneficial. For example the ads in Gmail don't bother me because I see it as a fantastic free service which probably wouldn't be sustainable otherwise. I definitely see OpenCandy on this side, I've seen it in mediacoder myself and thought that's a neat way for the developer to get something back. To me viewing the ad was the least I could do as a tiny tiny thank you and I did so without any grievances.

Best Virtual Machine Tool / Re: VirtualBox - Top of the Lot
« Last post by Eóin on May 14, 2009, 08:23 AM »
Good point justice, you do need a whole OS separately dedicated to the XP apps. My thinking is though once you've done that and have the XP os running then with features like shared clipboards, seamless windows, shared folders, etc the applications can talk to each other reasonably easily.

My instincts say not very hard but I don't have first hand experience with Win7 XP mode to compare just how seamlessly the XP applications sit on the Win7 desktop.

Well I gotta say this is all rather above board to me. Ads are everywhere, I see no real difference between an ad in the installer and one on the download page.

I also don't quite see Kartals position on installers, if the developer chooses to use OpenCandy even when an archive would have sufficed for distribution then that is the developers choice. I don't see where the issue with OpenCandy. Kartal you seem to be suggesting that that there is something inherently wrong in advertising in general. You also seem to be using the words spam and ads interchangeably which they certainly are not.

One of the ways in which I'm a dinosaur is that I listen almost exclusively to entire albums, not individual songs

Not exactly a helpful post, but just wanted to add I too tend only to listen to full albums, and almost always on random order too :)

"Create a WordPress Plugin" or "Create a WordPress Theme from Scratch", come on. Those are but two examples of "cool to be a geek" rather than actually being on the fringes of normal society.

Sorry but without a doubt that list was written by a mac fanboy who doesn't realise they are.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is Windows 7 RC spyware?

Perhaps I've gone cynical, but I'm come to the conclusion that pretty much everything I interact with might be reporting back on me. So the few pieces of software which actually acknowledge they do so only makes me respect them more.

Trusting anything these days seem naive.

Not necessarily trying to be argumentative Carol but I guess from my own experiences with small businesses and schools, most never bothered to make the switch from 2000 to XP back in the day, rather they simply waited till a PC needed replacing and came with XP anyway.

But these are all very small fish, most would have had volume licensing, but not ones that allowed an OS upgrade (which I wasn't aware existed but don't doubt either). Those types of operations don't tend to change what works, but want to know that when a update comes with a new PC that the old stuff will still work. Thats where XP mode comes into play in my opinion.

Also, who's going to switch to open source if they can't even cope with application incompatibility between XP and Vista.

And one more minidisc fan here. I still have a huge collection of no longer used discs. They definitely filled a niche back while mp3 players cost a fortune for 32MB storage.

Hyper-V is MS's virtualization technology already here with Server 2008. But yes it does need the hardware virtualization support in the cpu and it is a pity that tech didn't appear sooner and be a bit more widespread. I only have one computer with it.

I guess the thing is, that with Windows 7, people upgrading their PCs hopefully won't still be wanting to run XP on them. A new PC = hardware virtualization support = XP mode for legacy apps. It was always unlikely people with older computers would upgrade the OS any way, most people get a full new PC. Now with that they won't have to worry about existing apps not working.

I installed it, seems nice. All my initial impressions are that I will be switching over when it hit's RTM. But can't see myself making that switch earlier. Vista is fine for me and though I like bleeding-edge usually, I also like the assuredness of stability from my 'crucial software'.
