General Software Discussion / http://piwik.org/ Open source web analytics
« Last post by kartal on September 02, 2008, 07:36 PM »

I use it on my web site, easy to install and it is nice and flashy. I would never put google or any other service`s analytics app on my web site. So this was a great find for me.!!

http://piwik.org/

piwik is an open source (GPL license) web analytics software. It gives interesting reports on your website visitors, your popular pages, the search engines keywords they used, the language they speak… and so much more.

piwik aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics.

piwik is different from the competition because:
the features are built inside plugins: you can add new features and remove the ones you don’t need. If you are a developer, you can easily build your own plugins!
you own your data. Piwik being installed on your server, the data is stored in your own database and you can get all the statistics using open APIs (publishing the data in many formats: xml, json, php, csv)
(NOW AVAILABLE!!!) the user interface is fully customizable, you can drag and drop the widgets you want to display, create the reports you want

I think that company like google would have short and long term goals. The short term goal is coming up with a browser that serves better web apps. In the mid run probably they will try to turn this in to some form of operating system thus being the ultimate ms killer. And in the long run they just want people to wake up with google , go to bed with google.

I will keep myself out of this game.

Grorgy,
I did not mean that you can write a whole scholarly paper based on wikipedia. I was just trying to circle an idea there. I am not praising wikipedia as a sole holy information source. It is rather a good place to check some quick facts. And it sure helps people stay informed in certain topics. it is helpful.

Ninja,

Naturally in the beginning a search engine like wikia and grub are very marginal and only marginal section of the society is interested in it. As the name wikia implies it is based on wikipedia idea. Founder of wikipedia is part of the process. The idea is that a search engine and its terms should be open and public which I believe with my whole heart. Commercialised proprietary search engine is not good for future of man kind.

Look at wikipedia, it was a crazy idea in the beginning. Now it is so streamlined and developed that you can even cite for your science or literature research. Can you imagine a web space without Apache-php? Think about  Linux and what it is providing. These are all based on simple beliefs and hard work. Same thing can and should happen in internet search engines arena.

How do you know she is trying to sell crap to you? In her first reply post she did not name any application. Do not get me wrong but this is a mean way of replying someone`s post. Plus you have never mentioned in your first post that you were only looking for free software. I am not affiliated with anyone but here within donation coder everyone tries to help eachother. Also remember that she is the one who named "rollover" feature, which you needed to write half a page to explain what it was. So in some respect she already has helped you.

I use wikidpad day and night it is a fabolous application.  It has many features but some of the features you are asking for is not streamlined in wikidpad like todos. It has great todo implementation unlike another. But not streamlined. You need to try it yourself unfortunately.

"perhaps you could try this program." - ah selling crap to me, avoid avoid! run away in fear.

Usual google stuff, make big money from profiling--->adsense. Take over companies and code, beautify it, promote as innovation.

I am a happy k-meleon user. I personally have no interest in any new google product. Because this new browser from google will be one more nail in the coffin of your privacy.

Competition is good that is for sure but everytiem google come up with something people just drool all over as if like they come up with something from out of space. If you look around you will find tens of alternatives to every google product and some of them are way better than google`s product line.

At the moment I am helping wikia`s web crawler. I am hoping that they will be able to provide some decent search soon. Help them grow!

Alternatives to Lightoom. They are not quite powerful as Lightroom but comparable to certain degree.

I ride my bike, take a walk, read, draw, read politics, take my son for a walk-ride, listen music, exercise couple times a day, study another language, try new software. I do these everyday regularly. And on top of these I work!!!

I never watch tv, play games(even thou I worked on multiple game titles before). Do not get me wrong guys but watching tv or playing games is total waste of time. These activities should be reserved for those who never need to earn any money rest of their lives :)

powerfolder 1 year subscription is 54$.
I have used it for over 3 years, nice application. It has all the features you are asking for. Best thing is that it is very easy to setup and works based on subscription and invitation.

Try Powerfolder. It is little expensive if you need more than couple gb but I think it is worth. I was using it before they put a high price tag. I also do not like any subscription based software models that is why I would not buy it. But the software itself is very neat and easy to use.

I am officially waiting a desktop software coming out of Nirsoft!!!

Sysinternals apps are nice but they would just miss something, somethings would be overlooked constantly. For example they have "zoom it" very nice. But when you are in paint mode you cannot see where the paint brush-cursor is, all they needed to add was a cross or brush indicator!!

Has anyone used powerdesk7 under 64bit xp successfully? V6 is not closing properly under 64bit. If same problem is persisting I will pass this deal.
816
It is very nice. However it is very limited. For example It cannot share application between desktops which makes it very hard to use becasue all my applications that startup with the system works only in desktop1 and I cannot move-copy them to the new desktop.

Althou I like the minimalist approach they took.

Living Room / Re: Beware the Google Threat - Big Fat Ass Brother (BFAB)
« Last post by kartal on August 22, 2008, 11:13 AM »
I am not acting based on paranoia, it is not like I think that they are after me or something. I just think that they should have no business in my online behaviour. The fact is that these kinds of practices and policies will never get better, will just get worse until "you" say them stop.

This can be a similar argument like protesting companies like pepsi`s and cocacola`s aggressive marketing tactics(especially to children and under developed world) . Everyone would say well if I stop drinking pepsi it wont haver any affect on the company. That is not true! If you drink 1 pepsi every couple days that is like 100-150$ a year (per person). So yes you as an individual counts, every action yout take counts. Otherwise why would Google go through hassle of creating services like gmail and spreadsheets to service you, market to you? Because every individual counts that is why they set cookies that never expires on your computer.

I still wonder why people are so darn paranoid about cookies. Get an ad blocker, and possibly noscript if you're paranoid about flash exploits (like me :)), but cookie blocking? Come on, that's going over the top.

I'm not particularly fond of the way we're being watched, but google is my least concern (I don't do gmail) - I'm much more afraid of things like Carnivore. And tbh, if I have to watch ads, I'd rather have ads that might actually interest me - so yay google analytics.

What I like about winrar

-It can delete the original files as well.
-it can can create seperate archieves based on subfolders(named as the folder)
-It lets you have profiles that can be shown in the right click menu
-Profiles can be executed immediately without opening the compression window.

824
It would be great if FARR has more visual settings like

-Grid in result window (horizantal, vertical, or both) display in result window.
-Custom  background color for the results area
-Adjustable icon size(we have only 2 sizes now)

825
mouser do you think it is possible to pass aruments or name of the new page to gwp or tiwi in the type bar prior to launching them inside FARR?

For example

"gwp books to read" would create a page books to read and open gwp?
