DcUpdater / Re: LATEST VERSION INFO THREAD - DcUpdater - 1.21.01 - Aug 15, 2007

I would like to see an option to close DCU after checking for updates. I.E. when DCU is done checking, if it doesn't find any updates it'll just exit all together. I couldn't find such behaviour currently (sorry if I missed it in that case...).

My reason for this, is so I can use nncron Lite to launch DCU only on certain days or every 2nd day or whatever, and then exit when done.

Here's one I made some time ago in Gimp (using an easy tutorial on the net). It's posted elsewhere on the forum, but I'll just put it out there once more :)

Do anyone have any experience with Akismet? http://akismet.com/

I haven't tried it and only recently found it, but it's supposed to catch spam-posts to forums/blogs/comments, etc...

When a new comment, trackback, or pingback comes to your blog it is submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds of tests on the comment and returns a thumbs up or thumbs down.

There's a SMF plugin here: http://www.dansoftau...smf-mods/akismet.htm

Somewhat related, and definitely useful... Discovered this site through lifehacker: KeyXL keyboard shortcut database.

Keyxl.com is the largest online database of keyboard shortcuts in the world.
Our keyboard shortcut database is searchable by software program and covers all the major operating environments including Windows, Macintosh, Linux and browser-based applications.

So if you are looking for keyboard shortcuts try KeyXL!

And remember we are constantly adding new programs to our database so if you can't find something now come back and search again at a later time.

You may not find mouser's apps there (yet?), but the database still seems quite huge. Doesn't help much if you've tweaked all the shortcuts yourself though :p

Great review, Darwin. You really made me want to try Direct Access, damn it! ;)

I hate the Sourceforge forum. I don't understand why so many OSS developers write such great software and then don't get at least a half decent forum going. the SF forum just doesn't cut it

So some sigs kinda work

A tip for those of you who don't like signatures and don't want to see them: They can be disabled

Go to your profile, the Look and Layout Preferences and tick Don't show users' signatures.

General Software Discussion / Instant Boss featured on Lifehacker
« Last post by TucknDar on September 11, 2007, 11:35 AM »
I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with InstantBoss by "our very own app103", a cool little utility that helps you write that report or read just another chapter by telling you when to work and when to take a break. It really works! ;)

Anyway, it was featured on the well-known and respected site Lifehacker today, as the featured Windows download! Apparently Lifehacker discovered Instant Boss through a blog called Mind.

:o Congratulations, app, and expect a lot of traffic App's Apps!

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Find the owner program of a hotkey
« Last post by TucknDar on September 11, 2007, 01:17 AM »
yes, this is one tough cookie.. currently the only way to discover any conflicts is via a program that tries to register a hot-key and is unable to do so..
But is it actually possible to discover which app owns which hotkey? Or would the not so good solution be an app that tries to "quasi-register" every hotkey of a certain combination and then tell you all that are taken and which are still available... That would probably be possible through AHK but not as useful as the hotkey-spy

Oh, that would be sweet! If it's possible it would be great to be able to see every assigned hotkey and thus see any conflicts.

however i think RTF and image data are best implemented as part of core system and i do plan to do so.
You'll hear no complaints from me about that ;)

Could features like these, i.e. storing clips in various formats, be implemented through plugins? Now that you have a good plugin system in FARR, I suppose you could add this to some of your other apps too :tellme:

Find And Run Robot / Re: Public release in august ?
« Last post by TucknDar on September 09, 2007, 09:09 AM »
the alpha is excellent, and although I appreciate that you want screencasts and everything out along with FARR, I think it's fine with just a release along with the great documentation you usually have of your software. The screencasts could be made after that AFAIC

but it's your call obviously, and I have no problems with the alpha ;)

PFRANK looks very good.

Personally I just use the internal rename tool in Total Commander, however I've use RenameMaster from www.joejoesoft.com as well a couple of times.

I might check out ReNamer, though I'll still mainly use TC

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: Getting Organized in 2007
« Last post by TucknDar on September 06, 2007, 09:15 AM »
I think Mark Forster (IIRC) was spot on when he said in the interview that the experiment had a flaw in that there were new methods every week. A method needs work over time to be of any help.

What I would like this year's experiment to do for me (yes, I know it's really up to me), is to be a motivation to adapt ONE method. Not that DC or anyone needs to tell me which method, because any method can be good I suppose, it's all about motivation.

Having said that, I know I can't really expect anyone to be my personal motivator and creating perfect tasks that are adaptable to my or anyone's system or method. But if we work together in creating tasks or challenges that are more or less universal, I think that could be helpful, if you know what I mean. So point is that a successful experiment to me, is one that lets me stick to a method (I think I'll go for the Do It Tomorrow approach) but provides me with some guidance and challenges that let's me focus on actually adapting this method.

Mouser - how about a 'basic/advanced user' option to remove the extra features and just leave a simple set for people with minimal needs or just learning the program?

Or maybe a lite version.
Lite like it's little brother Minicap, perhaps  :-[

Edit: mouser beat me to it, damn it!! 8)

TucknDar, i'd like to just say that you don't have to follow the experiment religously - there isn't an award for doing everything that is advised. the aim is simply to help you realise a way of doing a bit more than what you are currently doing - or, if not a bit more, then just less of what you shouldn't be doing.
Yes, I know, and that's what I hope this'll help me realise. That would be the best award!

I'll try to take part this year, if I can find the time :P

Seriously, I REALLY NEED HELP! I'm an excellent procrastinator :-\ , but I'll do my best at this. Even a little change would help. I did start to follow some of Mark Forsters ideas (Do It Tomorrow really has some good points), but eventually I just screwed up... I want DIT to work for me, and with the aid of this great community (and a little more discipline) I think I can be a more efficient me 8)

In short: I'M IN, nudone!
