Finished Programs / Re: JustToDoIt - Fast ToDo lister

Would also be cool if there were options for the CompletedTasks:-
  • them all to have a time/date stamp when completed
  • for them to be struck through when completed (makes it more obvious that it is the completed list being looked at, but possibly less easy to read)

Had you a chance to add Dormouse's suggestions yet.  I just tried it and was looking for the completed items to be shown in the window but they were not.  I did find them in the completed tasks file though.

no rush, just saw it had been several months.

General Software Discussion / computer lab management software
« Last post by techidave on March 24, 2009, 08:35 AM »
Since there are a few here who work in educatioin I thought this piece of software might be useful.  It allows for classroom management of computers.  I have not installed it yet but am looking to try it out before deploying it in our labs next fall.  Perhaps someone here has already tried it or knows of another one.

A quote from their site

iTALC has been designed for usage in school. Therefore it offers a lot of possibilities to teachers, such as

    * see what's going on in computer-labs by using overview mode and make snapshots
    * remote-control computers to support and help other people
    * show a demo (either in fullscreen or in a window) - the teacher's screen is shown on all student's computers in realtime
    * lock workstations for moving undivided attention to teacher
    * send text-messages to students
    * powering on/off and rebooting computers per remote
    * remote logon and logoff and remote execution of arbitrary commands/scripts
    * home-schooling - iTALC's network-technology is not restricted to a subnet and therefore students at home can join lessons via VPN-connections just by installing iTALC client

I never realized there was that many people out there doing reviews on the dc software.  All the blogs and magazine reviews.  That's awesome!  Thanks Mouser for taking the time to do this.

Wonderful news but good to know.     I have been trying to stay away from audio and video issues but I guess I need to learn more about it.  Especially since I am the one and only tech at my school.  As schools get more involved in using technology, this is one area that is going to get used and abused more and more.

There are so many factors involved especially when you add a projector or a hook up to a sound system.  Plus the fact that you are trying to play a dvd from a laptop.   :wallbash:

these cds, I would have thought been old enough to not have copy protection on them.  I need to look real hard to find the original cd and try ripping it again.

I wasn't trying to share them, just play them.  I don't recall it ever asking me to download or install some kind of license.  but then again, my daughter probably ripped this cd.

I need something easy to setup so that all that use this computer can do it without many problems.  I will give CDex a whirl first.

I wonder if copy those folders using windows explorer could have had something to do with it???  That is from one drive to another.

Thanks f0dder for the help.  I have EAC installed  but haven't used it yet.  I will advise my kids to use it instead of wmp from now on.

I don't normally reinstall windows on the same hard drive on my machine.. but this time I did.  So there is no going back.   :(

I don't recall ever being asked about licenses on the xp machine either.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the problem with ripping with WMP?

So I guess we are out of luck on getting the music to play, especially if we cannot find a good cd of it.

Trying to find a solution has been driving me crazy.  The problem is I cannot play ripped music cd files on my vista computer.  I did a clean install of Vista on my computer that was running XP Pro SP3 which had WMP 11 on it.  The music files play ok on the xp machine just fine.

The cds were ripped using Window Media Player.  I have tried several media players but have been unsuccessful.

What do I need to check or do differently to prevent this from happening in the future?

Is it possible that the WMP  versions default options are different?  Such as ripping options??

Any thoughts?

When I try to open one of the files with WMP I get this error:

A license is required to play this file

The file you are trying to play was ripped (copied) from an audio CD.

During the ripping process, the file was "protected." This limits the number of computers on which the file can be played.

To play the file on this computer, you must download a license (a process known as "license migration"). A license acts an electronic key that allows you to "unlock" a protected file and play it.

To download a license for this file, click Download License.

of course the download license thingy doesn't do anything usable for me.

A very good article.  I wished I had this when our school purchased 10 Macbooks two years ago.  I certainly struggled with finding those Windows commands that I could use on the Mac.  A lot of them I have figured out or have found out since then.

But give my PC anyday!

Living Room / which is better for hard drive transfers: ide or usb cable
« Last post by techidave on March 07, 2009, 05:23 AM »
I was just looking at one of those usb to ide/sata adaptors online and since I don't have one to check with, I was wondering what your experiences were.  I have been opening my case and plugging hard drives into the ide cable to transfer data off of them.  It would save time if I didn't have to open the case and could use the usb instead.

has anyone done any testing to determine how much faster one is over the other?  For example, if I needed to transfer 10gb of data and the ide was only 5 minutes faster, then that's not too bad.  But if it takes an hour, then that's bad.

I have googled this but haven't found the answer yet.  Most specs talk in percent and I would rather know in minutes or hours.

Brings up another question, which adaptor is the best one to get?  hopefully it would be able to do 2.5" drives also/

Since I hardly ever use the print button, but opt to use the Ctrl+P, perhaps a warning box that says something like "landscape is selected" or something like that.

Hmmm...maybe I am dreaming about a solution to the problem.   :-\

But that would still require me to change printers.   :(  I seem to waste paper because I forget to change my printer settings.  Plus the fact that I hardly ever reboot or even restart Firefox to reset those settings.

Not sure if anything exist in the wild or if it is codable or not.  It would be nice if there was some kind of program that could automatically changer printer settings back to their default.

For instance, I change Firefox to print in landscape instead of portrait (default) but I forget to change it back.  the next time I print it prints in landscape and I wanted it in portrait.

so the application would monitor this and then change it back when it was done printing.  it might be nice to have a feature to change after so many print jobs.

I would google this but not sure what keywords to use.

I figured some of my friends on DC would know about this if anyone does.

many thanks,
Dave

After reading teh many pages on DC pertaining to video editing software, I decided to start a new thread.

I am looking for something that offers more than Windows Movie Maker but remains free.  My daughter is well versed in WMM but in her class at school they are using imovie on a Mac which is frustrating for her a windows user.  So tonite I set out to find that proverbial windows FREE software that will do at the very least as much or more than WMM and very similar to imovie.

if possible it should be able to save in .mov format and hopefully it could burn a cd or dvd that any player, computer could read without problems.

I realize I am asking a lot and after spending the last hour searching these forums, google, I don't seem to be getting anywhere.  Surely such a thing exist?  or not?  :tellme:

I anxiously await an answer from the geeks and experts at the DC forums 8)

I finally was able to compile it.  Had to recompile it because hotkeys were the same as one of the FARR hotkeys.  now it just says its toggling but never disables it.  I am using Vista Business SP1 and I am administrator on the computer.

I also have changed the network connection name unless its not what I think it is.   :(

Now that I look for ToggleNic again on his page, I didn't see it there.  For no more often than I compile ahk scripts, it's a challenge for me to remember what I need to do.   :(

thanks Lanux.  I did look at Skrommel's stuff but was earlier in the alphabet.  Like looking for DisableNic or NicDisable.  I just quickly scanned it though.

I will try it out.

Been searching for something that will let me disable or enable the nic on either vista or xp.  I could press a couple of keys like ctrl+shift+n and then it would to check the current status of the nic and then perform the appropriate action to turn it off or on.

I know I could just right click the 2 little monitors and choose disable or enable but that isn't what I want.  It would be nice if it could only be run under administrative user.

Most of the programs I have found have been for wireless nics but I need one for a desktop connected via a cable.
