On a different note,
anyone know of an addon that allows you to create and/or customise shortcuts?
Have been looking for a while a now.
Did find this info just a moment ago:
http://kb.mozillazin.../Keyconfig_extension
that works very nicely so far
(I think I actually installed that in FF at one stage but had to do a system restore the next day and forgot about it then..)
One I was hoping for was ability to mark mail as Unread - it's the best way of attracting my attention I find. 'R' marks mail as Read but unfortunately doesnt toggle status.
You can customise keys so I'll have a go at that - see your link & here.  - Unfortunately MarkasUnRead doesnt work or even seem to exist (nor does toggle markAsRead)

here's a list of standard shortcuts from the help site (not sure if that's what you're looking for)

Just a suggestion, but how about requiring a SHIFT+ENTER for a new line/carriage return? Seems to me, most users of this program do not need a new line often.

have a look in the options :) - on the pop-up tab you can set the Enter/Control behaviour (choice is Ctrl+Enter or Enter for new line & the other for close popup)

Thanks for the reminder wr975

this one always gets me
Ordering if you use a free e-mail address

E-mail addresses from free e-mail providers such as hotmail.com or yahoo.com are not accepted for online orders placed with credit and/or debit cards.
Though we are aware that both Hotmail and Yahoo offer fee-based accounts, we cannot distinguish between free and fee-based accounts. If you only have a free e-mail account, please select cash, check or wire transfer as your payment type; free e-mail addresses are accepted for those payment types. Alternatively, you can place your order via fax for manual processing. However, since online orders are processed automatically, they take less time than fax orders.
my emphasis

payment company is shareit.com - I guess they do it for security, but they must lose *so much* business because of it...

General Software Discussion / Re: Software for n-up photo printing?
« Last post by tomos on January 19, 2010, 05:50 AM »
rj, if you do get around to opening that Canon Printer box at some stage :D, it's definitely worthwhile installing:

my cheap canon inkjet printer came with a delightful free program (Easy-photoprint) for printing photos in various n-up configurations on different sized paper, etc.

it is limited to pre-set layouts, (1,2,4,9,20 etc.) but certainly very easy to use with a Canon printer and makes a very nice print (check settings of course, I go for highest quality & no optimisation, ymmv)

yep, only the pro version supports W7 now.

ahh, so it is a selling point, fair enough :) (steep enough price though - $40)

no, I was just opening dcupdater (or maybe it opened itself..)
It would be helpful though (but no big deal!) if it were in there by default - or can it be added manually - that way, whenever dcupdater does open, it would check if Anuran needs an update

I believe that, if you use the option within Anuran one time, it will show up when you launch DCUpdater manually.

ahh, you're right

I'm wondering should it not show in the dcupdater window? (It doesnt here).

It should if you launch the update check from the "Help, Check for updates" menu entry.  Is that what you're doing?

Screenshot Captor / Re: SC: Discussion of Scanning Functions
« Last post by tomos on January 15, 2010, 06:28 AM »
Scan (as Jpeg); then I save as PDF.

The scan is correct scale but the PDF has enlarged the image so that, if printed ('Page scaling' set to None), it gets cropped. Also a border is added on the right-hand side -
okay,
I see what's happening: the image is enlarged (on conversion to PDF), so as it fills an A4 page (210 x 297mm).
This is not being done in the Acrobat reader printer settings

bumping this - not sure if that explanation is fully clear so:

   1) I scan something, say a letter - text fits easily in A4 page
   2) tidy & crop it in SC
   3) when it is saved as PDF, SC enlarges the scanned image so as it fills the (A4) page to the very edge

there are workarounds, but I was hoping that step #3 could be stopped/removed ?

[...] if the entry was blank, it would re-use the previously known good entry to populate the next popup.  Does that make more sense?

Yes, that would be nice! I had not considered that.

+1

I finally got to update - I kept downloading new updates & 'forgetting' to install them. I know I can check for updates via systray context menu (but I havent been using app in a while).
I'm wondering should it not show in the dcupdater window? (It doesnt here).

RevoUninstaller works with Win7\64bit  but doesnt seem to be able to scan the registry for left over bits n pieces which is it's big 'selling' point
(can you say a free software has a 'selling' point ?!)

« Last post by tomos on January 14, 2010, 04:18 PM »
thanks Bamse, well there's lots of advice out there but as I said most of it was outdated - dont even remember how I found it in the end- I found a Trend Micro link for removing older versions & that got me on the right track.

True what you say about not making it easy to take advantage of the app, but I still suspect they think this is a cunning ploy
I should have taken a screenshot of the message window that said if you clicked on it you were accepting their eula - I carefully clicked on 'register later' (I'm translating here so not 100% sure of words used in English) anyways, programme wouldnt open it's main window if you clicked 'register later'

That's a crazy story App :tellme: the carrot is much better than the stick :) they should know that by now the fools

General Software Discussion / Trend Micro Security - oddly like malware...
« Last post by tomos on January 14, 2010, 03:53 PM »
I want to uninstall Trend Micro trial (it's installed on a new laptop)

Guess what - it may be possible, in fact I've seen loads of sites that tell me how to do it but none of them work for the version installed here (which version is it - I dont know, it wont tell me! 2010 presumably. It only allows me to open the programme window if I click on a pane which signifies that I agree to their eula). One helpful forum suggested going to Trend Micro site & downloading a removal tool. (Starting to sound like malware to me) So I searched three Trend Micro websites & found nothing - loads about uninstalling malware...

I understand a security suite doesnt want to be easily installed - but this smacks totally of take advantage of anyone unlucky enough to trial their software or buy a machine with it pre-installed

I suspect I have to register it before I can uninstall it - (that talked about with some other anti-virus lately here).
But my point is, well youv'e probably gotten my point by now  :-\

I dont wish them well if they continue tactics like this

[edit] found the relevant info here http://esupport.tren...t-Security-2010.aspx I'll charge them for the last two hours of my life faffing around with their pile of :D [/edit]

can anyone recommend a simple startup utility (I mean that you can check/control what's starting with the OS) for 64bit Win7 ?

General Software Discussion / Re: FinePrint vs. priPrinter
« Last post by tomos on January 13, 2010, 04:26 PM »
I think priPrinter should also be mentioned here. I find it nicer than FinePrint, mostly because cropping is very convenient with it. It is a bit expensive (like FinePrint), but the banner of the unregistered version is unobtrusive enough that I'm using it all the time for personal printing. On the other hand, I'm using an old version, and living in fear that new versions will make the banner larger...

mentioned in another thread lately ...

1) Focus the window by clicking its taskbar button.
2) Press alt-space, m, down-arrow.
3) Now, without clicking your mouse at all, move the mouse around.  Your window should be stuck to the pointer and easy to retrieve.

that's a neat trick :)

So,
can anyone recommend the least damaging way to rip CD's to mp3 (with preferably a reasonably priced or free app) ??  ...seeing as it looks like the MP3HD sounds (har har :p) like a bit of a dead dog

Presumably, you mean the least lossy way, no? I don't think it is possible to physically harm the media itself when ripping CD's.

ehh, the least lossy way for the MP3's :D (I meant)

shadow defender, which is what returnil should have been : light, efficient, problemless

that sounds interesting - very few mentions of it here, hardly mentioned, in fact. How do you use it? (if you want, start a new thread...). Is it 'safer' to restore using it, than restoring an image (e.g. Acronis TI), does it work in the same/similar way?
There's very little info on their website http://www.shadowdefender.com/index.html

« Last post by tomos on January 11, 2010, 01:04 PM »
Well, progress indeed :D all methods working

First with RegEx:
I downloaded both Notepad++ & 2 (in portable formats) and tried both
It's like magic - zap zap & everything's reversed   I swear I was staring at the screen with my mouth open :O

Tom Jones Singer
becomes
Singer Tom Jones
+
Jones Singer
becomes
Singer Jones

I also wanted to strip out the last part (so I would be left with the singer's name in the above examples)
so, in Notepad++

Find: (.+) (.+)
Replace: \1
worked a treat

I can see why people like regular expressions - thanks for all the help again people
=============================================================

Skwire, that script works perfectly too  - I was initially getting error messages, but because I did a 'save as' from the copy or paste box :-[ which of course was html...
I will use both methods as I'm getting bits of lists sent to me in dribs & drabs & I need to be able to sort (again using the example above) by 'Name' and by 'Occupation'
