Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Faster boots combining hibernate and restart
« Last post by tomos on January 31, 2010, 04:11 AM »
Tomos, does the same thing happen with both the .ahk and the .exe?

that was with the AHK
will try out the exe now, but I'm heading out shortly - so if you dont hear from me shortly that will hopefully mean it was successful :)

Working so far with the exe - timer is at 7 minutes and counting

It should pop up a countdown window after restarting.  Do you run any programs that would block the ability to place a shortcut in your startup folder?  I have code in place to check for a problem when creating the shortcut but if something deletes it afterward, I can't know.

sorry, I forgot to say -
the same 'window' showed after restart - with the choice of Restart with Hibernate or Standby

Latest version...includes ability to hibernate or standby on next restart.  Countdown timer should work more reliably than previous version.

Download (source/binary included)

I tried the Script Skwire.
- chose Restart & Hibernate -
it restarted but didnt hibernate & I didnt see any timers - am I misunderstanding?
Does it wait until all is quiet or should it just popup a countdown timer after restart ?

edited for clarity (hopefully)

I too used to think the early Americans

I was more thinking of modern day American's.  I get a little irritated how most (not all) choose to call their version of 'English' the original, when it clearly is not, also, how they choose to drop letters from certain words just because they cannot pronounce/will not learn how to pronounce it correctly (IE: Aluminium becoming Aluminum)

it's interesting that many American words (and pronunciations) are the those that would have been used in England in the 17th/18th centuries - it was England that changed from e.g. Fall to Autumn. Of course it works the other way around too..
I'm not a fan of the spelling changes either, but suspect we might be totally appalled by the spelling of the future if certain spelling habits catch on (like as in txtng ur messge - although maybe predictive text will ward that one off!)

I had a strange issue when ordering my 2nd license : I got a TaskCatcher license instead.  Bill sent me manually the correct license when I notified him.  I did the order process another time, more slowly, and guess what : another TC license...

could it be cause you're only supposed to get one license per person?
When I got it it, after making payment, it asked me to fill in name again in order to get the plus key. It then said there was a problem with cookies & that it couldn't figure out was I looking for winpatrol or the Taskcatcher and gave me a page where I could choose.

Those 10 function keys on the left side...

I'd love to have a keypad full of them, separate from my keyboard...with at least 100 of those keys. Throw in a row of number keys*, so I can have "pages" of them and expand that 100 to the functionality of 1000.  :D

*Scratch that...forget numbers, just make them customizable "category" keys.

sounds like that scary taskbar of yours ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Make XP look like Win7
« Last post by tomos on January 29, 2010, 06:45 AM »
Is there a guide to making Win7 look like Win2000 and behave like XP?

Because I am very happy with my XP system with classic theme, and I'd rather not upgrade if I am going to end up forced to look at a bunch of eye candy that I'd rather not, and lose functionality with all the crap they changed.

I use xp with classic (but I've changed the icons and made the colours nicer - for my taste at any rate) -
I had always been a bit envious of flash looking Vista/Aero screenshots though.
Anyways,
lately I was messing around with a Win.7 laptop and I was really suprised how *little* I liked Aero. I presume it can be tweaked (I was too busy struggling with other eh aspects) but, out of the box I found it ugly and those ginormous icons! they looked ridiculous on a 15.6" screen at any rate...

If you set it up for him, I'm sure he'll be able to use IQ. I've got customers with very little computer knowledge using IQ on a daily basis.
Pierre,
maybe we could do the first german version ?!

ooups, I see it's available in German already  :-[

Living Room / Re: Best trackball?
« Last post by tomos on January 28, 2010, 02:56 AM »
Yeah, it's a bummer the trackman doesnt come for left handers - it's the best design I've found so far for your wrist/arm/shoulder.
Your wrist is at it's natural angle, plus the arm doesnt have to move. But it's not that great for accurate work I've found.

Re the one you're looking at, I wonder if it might actually be a strain to use - it looks like you're meant to move the ball with your fingers (although you could possibly rest your hand on the table beside the mouse and use your thumb, which would be less stressful for the hand & wrist).

Would you be interested in this 'vertical mouse' ? https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=14541.0
Pros:
~ very good position for wrist
Cons:
~ not good to use if you have any shoulder problems (cause with the wrist in it's 'proper' position, the mouse has to be moved from the shoulder)
~ again, not so accurate

I use Billing Boss.  In the words of the gecko, "easy peasy, lemon squeezy".
that looks good -
do you know are you also easily able to printout invoices &/or save them locally in some usable format ?

Living Room / Simple app/method to store contacts & create invoices for same?
« Last post by tomos on January 26, 2010, 04:30 AM »

I'm trying to help someone who plans to start off own business/self-employed.
He is a very basic computer user (can email, surf, and do basic stuff in word-processor)

Is there one app (remember, simple!) where you can

  • store contact details
  • easily create an invoice for one of the contacts, preferably with selected contact details filled in automatically

~ ideally one would be able to add details of work done to the app & these could also be added to invoice simply
~ ideally the app would be available in a german version

Personally I use InfoQube for this sort of thing but I dont think he'd manage that...
Thanks for any help!

Living Room / Re: The Third & The Seventh - Beautiful CG short film
« Last post by tomos on January 25, 2010, 06:09 AM »
It is a very beautiful film, thanks :)

I'm still confused about what exactly was 'real' and what not. From one comment I got the impression the buildings are real, but the author says "-I think i must make it clear. There are a few non-CG elements in the shortfilm: photographer (shot on greenscreen), pigeons, timelapsed growing flowers, flying airplane and sky backgrounds." Ironically some of the real things were IMO the weakest parts of the film (photographer just too arty & cliched, pigeon & flowers a bit kitchy). I feel a bit callous being critical of such a wonderful piece of work though :-[

I lived in US (New England) for a year with an american family - on valentines day they made cards (no bought cards!) for parents & grandparents (& possibly for friends as well - it was years ago so no longer 100% sure) - I thought it was really nice & presumed it was typical for over there, but reading this thread that doesn't seem to be the case...

Currently, Anuran has to be running at the time of scheduled archive.  In other words, if your computer is off or hibernated, it won't archive.

I hadn't realised that Skwire - sorry for pestering you!

I want to archive log daily, It's currently set to:-
Archive logs every: [1] [day(s)]
Does that archive then: 24hrs after the first entry, or at midnight (the latter doesnt seem to be the case here so I will have to wait till later to check the former*)

It will archive 24 hours after you click OK.  You would be better off using the second option where you can specify a daily time to archive.

I'm afraid it's not archiving here if computer is shutdown or hibernated at scheduled archive time... settings "Archive daily at:" (hibernated last night & tried again today via shutdown)
Version 1.0.21 build one - oh :-[ I see newer versions (but none that relate to this problem?)

I've updated & will report back in the next couple of days

[edit] forgot to say I did a test earlier & it archived okay when pc running [/edit]

Bug: several times a day, Anuran popup text field is blank upon popup even though previous entry was not blank.
I noticed that earlier today - i.e. with last but one version:

v1.0.22 - 2010-01-20

Give this version a shot, folks, and let me know if the "extra lines" issue is resolved.

wasnt using previous version so cant say...

here's a minor problem with the viewer

I right click an archived log. Context menu shows.
I then right-click any other log.
The app uses 100% cpu (well, one full core) for a few seconds, and only then shows the context menu for that item

I'm just getting back to using this now (well, as of yesterday evening)

I want to archive log daily, It's currently set to:-
Archive logs every: [1] [day(s)]
Does that archive then: 24hrs after the first entry, or at midnight (the latter doesnt seem to be the case here so I will have to wait till later to check the former*)

I hibernate evenings btw - yes yes my computer I mean :p    :)
I should probably better use the second option (Archive logs daily at:) but thought I would follow this up as I found it confusing...
