I'm afraid in this case I do fall into that category assuming you were referring to f0dders comments :P

Ehtyar.

I was indeed. I've updated my post for clarity to include f0dder's quote. And by the way, that was my way of agreeing with f0dder. :)

Living Room / Re: News Article: YouTube Bans Terrorist Videos
« Last post by Deozaan on September 14, 2008, 05:57 PM »
While I definitely don't want to see terrorist propaganda available on the net, this could be a slippery 1984 slope.

I do. We need more coverage in the mainstream media and other sources of video, etc. to show how dangerous these people really are and how many of them there really are.

I'm trying to keep this from becoming political here, but all the time the leaders of Iraq will have big rallies saying how they're going to destroy Israel and the "Great Satan" (USA) and the next week come to USA and talk with President Bush saying how they don't want nuclear warheads and they want peace etc.

But the media never shows us those videos of thousands and thousands of people cheering and chanting and praising the idea of destroying the "Infidels" Israel and USA.

It's like Hitler and his rallies and we're just pretending that it's not happening.

Oops, there goes that guy's law. :-[

I feel sorry for people who still haven't learned that you should never click files in random mail attachments.

I feel sorry for those people because they own computers. I bet they're miserable.

Ehtyar, I think the issue here with using "denial of service" is that we usually hear it in terms of DOS or DDOS attacks, and not just bugs. The way it's used here sounds like if I wrote a program that sometimes ended up going into an infinite loop without an escape and locked up the program, that would be considered a "Denial of Service." And while that may technically be true (I don't know if it is or not), we've always just called those "bugs" or "infinite loops" or "locking up" or something similar.

In other words, "Denial of Service" has a very negative, malicious connotation associated with it because of how it's frequently used by "bad guys" to do bad things. Kind of like how the general population thinks the word "hacker" means a malicious person trying to do bad things with computers/electronics.

And I agree with mouser and others: Whenever Acrobat opens in the browser is practically denies my browser service because it freezes it up or takes forever to initialize or whatever. Acrobat opened up independently of the browser is okay--usually--but whoever decided Acrobat should be a browser plugin needs to be punished!

« Last post by Deozaan on September 14, 2008, 05:35 PM »
Boo for Virginia! Of course, that's without me having any knowledge of the law. A lot of times when laws are passed they promote one big issue and kind of put in fine print another restriction or law that nobody even knows about so people get all fired up about the big issue and pass it to a law without knowing what other laws/restrictions they've just implemented.

This could be one of those cases.

It's sad that people have to keep reminding others about the basic way to "protect" yourself. Which is actually more about inaction than taking action. i.e. Don't give out your login details; don't install/run cracks or bots that will play for you.

It's not like you have to perform a series complicated actions to protect yourself. Keep your anti-virus updated and don't do anything stupid!

Living Room / Re: You might want to skip the whole Blu-Ray generation
« Last post by Deozaan on September 14, 2008, 03:09 AM »
I disagree. Even though Blu-Ray is the "current-gen" optical media format, I think DVD is still the most widely used media, perhaps even CD as well.

So it may only be 5-10 years before the OLED HD or whatever other format that replaces Blu-Ray is available, but I think Blu-Ray itself will probably at that point be where DVD is now.

Playing around some more, I decided to go for nearly the smallest creature possible (that still looks like a creature). Introducing...

Tiny:
Tiny.png

"Perhaps one of the smallest creatures to crawl upon dry ground."

He doesn't look very scary. Quite the contrary in fact; he looks like he should be packaged up and sold as "bite-size" treats to carnivores and omnivores. However, should Tiny somehow survive Creature stage and make it to Tribal stage, he can look very formidable (if not a little... well... tiny) indeed!

Ha! I just noticed that Tiny is so tiny that he's the same size in the thumbnail image as the higher-resolution screenshot, which is zoomed in as close as the game will allow. Compare that to how much of the screen Masticanalis takes up in the larger images. :)

EDIT: Fixed spelling error and formatting problems.

I don't like the "Civilized" Cody outfits because I ran into another Cody Empire in my game and they look like that one. And they're mean warfaring beasts who got bored with the alliance we forged. They now demand money from me with threats of declaring war if I don't pay up.

I much prefer the cooler Space outfit (that you can see in my screenshots). They may be hippies but they sure do look cool!

General Software Discussion / Re: Mouse Gestures
« Last post by Deozaan on September 13, 2008, 09:02 PM »
Deozaan,

Folks were posting about specifically wanting to use a "rocker" gesture to go back and forward, mostly used in browsers. That's the only reason I mentioned A-I-O Gestures. It's perfect for that feature alone! And Opera already has that feature built-in.

Jim

Thanks for pointing out the "rocker" gesture for A-I-O Gestures. I always wondered what that meant. But to me the mouse gesture itself for "back" and "forward" work well enough. :)

Anyway, back to generic Mouse Gestures for the OS.

I'm pretty sure there is a/some website that detects this information. I don't know the name of any that do only this, but my Xfire profile page did it for me.
