x86 assembly :)

- haven't had the time to go in-depth with perl/python/lua etc.

Well, I'm just glad I write at least relatively portable code: base code should enough to port to >=32bit platforms, GUI code hopelessly tied to windows, but not too compiler dependant... at least that's advantages of "regular C++" over borland C++ builder, VB, Delphi, ... (yeah yeah, the real world situation is a bit more grey than this white/black, but...)

Also, there's already a 'D' language - www.digitalmars.com :)

Hehe :)

The point with VC2003 and newer is that it's pretty standards-compliant (unless you choose to use extensions), it generates good code, and you can even use it for custom OS development if you want to... So captured in the MS dungeon? Nah :)

Edvard, duh - something as important as that is of course closed-source..

And well, if you drop a nuke, you're going to mess up most of redmond anyway, so might as well do the job proper :P

Hmm, it would be possible to force an application to "suspended" state for "a short period" of time every "short period of time" - this would be pretty brute-force, but might do what you need... the apps won't run smooth then, though, so not suitable for taming something ugly like flash.

I'm just glad you aren't stuck with Borland junk anymore now, mouser :)

You will still have "high CPU usage", since applications still do as much processing as they have to...

The priority of the high-usage tasks, however, is lowered - giving other tasks a chance to chew some CPU time, which should (hopefully) result in an over-all smoother user experience.

Oh, and don't forget that the Terminator was apparently powered by a 6502 (the CPU that was in the Apple ][).  With Dual core Pentium 4 class CPUs around now, I'm wondering where our robot servants are?
If you can answer us where the skilled programmers are, perhaps you have the answer for your own question :P

If you honestly think failing a leaktest is so bad then you need a firewall that can not only block all the known threats but also any potential new threats and no such beast exists.
-Carol Haynes
Well, you can get 100% effective port-based filtering from hardware firewalls... but of course that doesn't detect "unauthorized applications" smuggling data on an allowed port. But then there's of course fancy-pants stateful packet inspection...

There are many conspiracy theories on comodo's products.. but just read around their forums.. pretty much boills down to letting every one know who they are, so people will accept them for the paying products.. or some thing like that.. branding an excellent free firewall with their name seems logical for a better future in business I would think.

I've just seen too many free products that went shitware after they had a big enough user base :(

It doesn't get hilarious until you need to translate terminology between different languages. Glad I'm not doing genealogy :)

Code can indeed be green - especially comments ^_^

And I certainly don't use a mouse while coding.

It's perfectly possible to do even under windows, but it would require double-buffering (ie: don't draw directly to the visible surface, but draw to an off-screen surface and flip to visible when all drawing is done) - and it might require using DirectDraw (dunno if GDI bitblit is synced to refresh).

Wow, I thought development had stopped, so I switched over to foobar :)

I like musikCube because of it's clean and no-nonsense design - which works out of the box, without requiring a lot of manual tweaking and messed up scripts :)

What Microsoft really needs to do is fire half of their coders, and be a bit more targetted in what they focus on. There's some really great coders at MS, but appearantly also some really lousy ones, and fscktarded managers.

FileZilla has a really, really, really, really crappy interface and iirc a few bugs... but other than that, it's pretty cool: SSL support, multiple logins on a server (helps with speed-throttled servers), etc :)

General Software Discussion / Re: NTFS encryption security on portable drives
« Last post by f0dder on December 03, 2006, 02:37 PM »
Makes sense to format things like MMC and SD as FAT16 I guess, since some older cameras/whatever might not support FAT32?

Shipping external USB drives as FAT32 makes sense for a lot of users I guess, but it bites you when you work with large datasets - especially because the error messages you get aren't very intuitive :)

Iirc the SIDs for "default" accounts like administrator will be different on each windows install, and they certainly will be for non-default accounts, even if they're created using the same name.

I had totally forgotten about this when writing the original post you quoted - duh.

So if you plan on using security features (whether that be NTFS encryption, or just regular permission stuff), be careful. It can cause problems if you're using the disk(s) in other machines.

I have strongly discouraged users from formatting their USB flash drives with NTFS directories if they are taking them outside their Windows domain for fear it might create ownership problems down the road.
-superticker
Not a good suggestion though - if somebody formats his drive as FAT, he'll be in a nasty situation once he's filled up some 100GB and need a file that's >4GB large :) (but okay, at least there's transparent conversion to NTFS with "convert.exe").
