General Software Discussion / Re: Easy remote access to my home pc?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 15, 2008, 10:57 PM »
If you don't have a static IP with your Internet Provider then you can create a dynamic hostname (one that keeps track of your dynamic IP address) through dyndns.org

Thanks, I have a dyndns.org account set up keeping track of my IP. How will it know when I change, for example, if I change ISPs or move to a different geographical location?

And thanks to 4wd for the easy to follow process. I think the only hitch here is I don't necessarily want to password protect my user account on this PC, but obviously I don't want anybody to be able to login from anywhere.

And about this:

You might need to add in the name of the user who is allowed to connect remotely under RDP.  To do so, on the server PC go to My Computer->Properties->Remote->Select Remote Users and add the username in, (from step 1 above).

By default, the owner of the PC already has Remote Access, ie. the first user you created while installing XP, (who'll have admin priveleges).  Since all my PCs have the same initial user I haven't had to add any users to RDP.

Is that the login credentials for the server or is that the User account name for the client pc? For instance, if I'm at the university and they have weird user accounts like building names and room numbers, do I need to allow all the possible accounts I might be on when trying to remote, or just the 1 server account?

So far, I like it sufficiently. It works better than g.ho.st for me, anyway :D

Yeah, G.ho.st was more of a novelty than anything else. After toying around with it for a couple days I realized how useless it really was.

I wonder what arse would send you an invite after it was no longer invitation only . . .
Some kind of shrimp, I suppose. :P

Podcast Radio Show / Re: Requesting Ideas for DonationCoder Podcast #7

What about Skype? Can you do conference calls using Skype?

Also, I think 15-20 minutes is a SHORT podcast. Too short. I'd like them to be at least 30 minutes or longer. Of course, that's really easy for me to say as someone who hasn't committed to submitting content.

As far as topics or themes, we could revive a few old ideas that sort of puttered out. For example, there was the Cody Club where each month you were given an assignment.

We could have a complaint/compliment segment, where someone gets to complain about something that drives them nuts or cast praises on good things they love.

We could have a section near the beginning where you highlight DC news items or interesting threads. Or a Member highlight/interview each time. That could be kind of interesting how that works out.

I signed up for the waiting list to be accepted to the beta, then got an invite by srikat which allowed me to make an account immediately.

Well, just in the past week I got accepted (waiting list ended now that it's public I guess) with the chance to win a bigger storage account, and just got invited this morning by someone else (Thanks!) who didn't know I had it already.

So even though I doubt I ever would have won the larger account I'm a little perturbed that I didn't get the chance when I signed up.

Post New Requests Here / Re: REQUEST: DonationCoder Song
« Last post by Deozaan on September 15, 2008, 01:52 PM »
I guess since this post is about a ring tone, it would need to be short.

But I wouldn't mind having a standard 2-4 minute mp3 to play if it was good. :)

Also, superboyac, do you still have the original theme song from that podcast? It's a little difficult to extract it from the podcast itself, and I'm not sure about the quality or if mouser is talking during the song, or if it's faded in or out etc.

Make it a 13 hour DonationCoder Trance track. :P

But I have seen exercise machines connected to video games, where you have to keep pedaling the bike (or whatever) to power your video game/controller. Kind of a niche market, and more of a novelty than anything else.

What's the preference here?  Fast, slow, happy, sad, sexy, funny?

I think it should adequately match the theme of DonationCoder, which to me seems to be the theme of Cody. Fun, happy, cute, and maybe a little mischievous. :-*

Thanks 4wd! One more question:

4) On a client PC, Start->Accessories->Remote Desktop Connection and type in the IP of the server PC.

How would I know the IP of the server PC?

Finally got around to reading this review! I'd heard about Toribash before but it didn't interest me enough for $20. Now that I know it's been made available for free I'll have to give it a try!

Thanks for the review!

It's a bad time to be poorly educated about protecting your privacy and detecting scams/phishers.

maybe I am missing something, but these devices are just microelectronics, right?  Can't an EMP pulse (or even a rare earth magnet for that matter) screw it up enough to be unusable?  I understand that is not as feasible with credit cards, since that is what they run off of, but for the passport?  Just a thought.

Tampering with your passport is illegal. :(

I remember chatting in IRC about 12 years ago, having discussions about how the net was about to collapse under its own weight and we'd see WWW 2.0. This was when it was still more frequently called "the World Wide Web" (which brought to the mind spider webs and surfboards used for "surfing the web") and not "the internet."

General Software Discussion / Re: Google Chrome - What Will It Take
« Last post by Deozaan on September 14, 2008, 10:08 PM »
I uninstalled Chrome the other day and rebooted. Then when I noticed that Google Update was still running, I looked around for it. I found about 6 copies of Google Update in temp files and in a pagefile (or something related to the pagefile) not to mention Program Files and somewhere else.

Google Update also was never in my Add/Remove Programs list, so I had to search and destroy manually.

So now we all know. The first Denial of Service Condition was in 1968 (or 2001, depending on how you look at it):

I believe f0dder is referring to the LHC's Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition grid, and indeed he has a very good point. You'd think of all places that ignore security, the LHC would not be one of them.
Surely you can imagine someone managing to cause some damage with the worlds largest particle accelerator at their control.

Ehtyar.

I didn't realize that the computers that control the LHC were at risk. I thought it was just data or website computers that were compromised.
