The deal is only on when at least 10 people have made a purchase. I wonder what is left for the company when PayPal has been paid!

I hope he's using the new PayPal micropayments...

But I'm glad I *didn't* see mice crawling in and out of the innards of a still-living animal at the same time. :P

I saw something like that in person when I was a young child. My older brother had a small pet lizard of some sort and fed it mealwormsw. Well, apparently the lizard ate them whole, without chewing or otherwise killing them. They ate their way out from the inside of the lizard.

:o That is just wrong, dammit. Of course I've heard of such things before, mostly with wasps laying eggs in say a spider and then them eating their way out when they hatch. But somehow when it's not insects/arachnids, it's more creepy...

- Oshyan

+100 - very wrong! Ick!

But oddly, from WP:

Mealworms are typically used as a food source for reptile, fish, and avian pets. They are also provided to wild birds in bird feeders, particularly during the nesting season, when birds are raising their young and appreciate a ready food supply. Mealworms are high in protein, which makes them especially useful as a food source. They are also commonly used for fishing bait.

Interesting writeup, thanks. Are you typically allowed to modify bought stock images?

Yes. In fact, it's expected that you will.

I've never clicked one of these except by accident :-[. But honestly, I wonder how many clicks you need until it gives you 400$.

40,000? :)

Yeah... I know what you mean.

But, if you have software in the Android store, then it's a feather in your cap, and a line in your resume, and who knows? It could land you that job or gig that pays you a lot more than the $400.

Does anyone have any experience with browser plug-ins or extensions?

I'm looking to develop some software, but want to integrate it with the browser. i.e. As you're surfing around, you find something, then the extension acts as a front-end for the software.

This would let me do some things that simply aren't practical inside the browser. e.g. JavaScript and AJAX are not a replacement for C# and desktop power.

In the past, I've written custom browsers, but I'd like to switch direction there.

Thanks for any advice, links, or anecdotes.

I guess I'll just bid adieu.  It is clear I am very out of sync with some of the general thinking here...in that I cannot see how anyone would conclude that this "method" has any coat of acceptability whatsoever.

I say that because, to me, if anything is being done (installed or info sent to wherever) before the user has a chance to prevent it, that unquestionably (in my opinion) constitutes unacceptable behavior.

I agree to an extent; just not as passionately as you. Mainly though I just want to keep Renegade from getting cranked back up... see if we can save him from destroying his keyboard in this thread!   ;D

Hahahaha~! YES! No need to get me all riled up any more! :)

I'm like a dog with a bone sometimes...  :-[

Ok... Most of the time~! :D

I have some more software that I want to get up onto Super Simple, and should get back to work! I've also got more client work for mobile phones and an MMORPG game coming in!

Clearly, you have no problem with someone, without your permission, installing software on your machine, or sending off data about you or your machine--as does OpenCandy.

This is the kind of thing that I've been trying to debunk.

I've looked into what OC is doing and checked the data. It's not doing that. Here's a post I did that shows what is happening: Opening Up OpenCandy. That walks through a low-level look at the installer, the network traffic, and the information in that network traffic.

One thing I did not point out in there, is that the network traffic is NOT encrypted. So it's wide open to see! Now, if you were trying to do naughty things, wouldn't you try to hide?

If it were doing naughty things, I wouldn't have started using it.

I am not out to change opinions on the topic. Like I've said before, that's simply stupid.

What I have been trying to do is to set straight some facts.

Well, I did go off on a tangent about language usage and red herrings. But that's kind of a nit-picky issue.

Thanks! :)

Like I said, it could use some improvements. I've committed to following a certain path for the site though, and structural tweaks are a ways off. But... I don't know if I'll be able to stop myself from fixing it now that you've mentioned it... Hahaha~! :)

I personally think they should hire Renegade in some capacity. He's done more to build a convincing case for OC (despite the fact I personally don't like how OC implements itself) than some of the official communiqués ever did. He also speaks to the concerns of developers and software geeks. And, being a developer himself, on their level.

Hey DrApps! Maybe you folks should consider hiring this guy in some capacity?

Seriously.

I hate when I go back to something and I've not commented it, or been short. It's better to be verbose.

TOP 10! :D

The proof is in the pudding~! :)

Robosoft and DynamicPAD Results 12 Days In

So, Super Simple has been live for 12 days. It took about 2.5 days to submit, and since then I’ve only made some blog and forum posts. Results? Not too bad. Photo Resizer has moved from second click results to first click results, just as predicted. The Super Simple Photo Resizer even has a top 10 ranking now!

I've seen much better results in the past, but it still works.

When I was doing the Super Simple site, I bought a lot of artwork from Vector Stock.

They're very cheap, with the same artwork being 10x as much elsewhere.

I've written it up here:

Hopefully that will be helpful for some people in their next web or software project.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's not justified. Just that it's way too much to create freeware with it ;)

You can always have an ad-bar in your freeware. In-app advertising has been very well received on the mobile platform, unlike the desktop.

This is just too good. The article only gets better as you read.

http://www.cracked.c...ng-to-dark-side.html

Let's face it, animals are bastards. With all of the ant slavery, ape war and duck rape in the world, it's easy to decide nature is something best left to the wild. But there are those animals that -- thanks to Disney and The Far Side -- we tend to think are more likely to dispense witty one liners than bite our face. But while we've been busy rooting for them, they've been quietly revealing their true colors ...

I've never installed anything OC has promoted.
Does it do an auto install if you choose one?
Or does it do it another way?

OC isn't installed on your machine.  It runs in the installer temp directory, loaded into memory by the installer so that functions can be called from the installer.  Once the installer cleanup runs, it is removed from your machine.  Renegade did a test to see if everything is removed, and apparently it is, other than one empty folder.

To be clear, IIRC, that was where I declined an offer. I should do the same where I accept an offer.

Here's some good information from DrApps:

http://www.techsuppo...re.htm#comment-69790

OpenCandy does indeed want to make sure that we don't recommend something that someone already has installed. However, OpenCandy does *NOT* scan your computer and catalog all the programs you have installed (a very common misconception for some reason). What the OpenCandy installer plug-in does do is use what we call "validation code" to determine whether a recommendation a developer has chosen is valid for a given computer. As an example, someone without Outlook installed wouldn't benefit from an Outlook plugin. So if a developer has chosen to recommend an Outlook plugin, an XML-based file of "validation code" is sent to the user's computer. The OpenCandy plug-in (running locally) checks the "validation code" to see if Outlook is installed and if so, the OpenCandy plug-in sends our server a binary "yes" in order for the graphics and messaging for the recommendation screen to be sent to the user's computer to be displayed during the publisher's installation process.

That's some of the internal processes of the OpenCandy DLL.

It should clear up some concerns for some people.

But 400$, not yay :(

It seems reasonable to me. $400 isn't really that much for what you're getting. You can demo it, and I think the demo is unlimited. I think you need to pay the license fee to actually publish an application. Don't quote me on that though.

I was searching for the Pay per install market recently and the rates of download made me chuckle. Check the rates on 21media.biz (sorry not going to give them link).

1000 downloads - 100$ (US downloads), just curious what's the rate of OC in comparison to them ?  :D

Holy Murphy! From 21media:

What do you pay for?

We pay for a unique installation of our EXE-file on a user's computer. By registering in our affiliate program, you receive an EXE-file associated with your ID in our system. We can track the unique installations of this EXE-file on user's computers. The payment for each installation is made according to the rates of the chosen program. The installed EXE-file is safe for users, its activity does not harm users and their computers and it does not violate any law of any country.

How do I start working with your affiliate program?

You need to register and then you'll get a unique EXE-file that you can install by any means except SPAM.

That's the kind of program that's perfect for bundling with warez and cracks.

With OC, so far it looks like an auction system, but I'm not sure. Different offers have greater/lesser earnings. You can see that in a control panel screenshot above.

Now, whether that's due to better offer acceptance rates or not, I am not sure.

I've posted some information about revenue here:

http://cynic.me/2011...t-opencandy-revenue/

That breaks things down by country. The US is worth about $0.50 per accepted offer, but acceptance is only about 21%. Keep in mind that it is a very small data set and not really very reliable. We're talking about the first 10 days of a product on a site that is brand new with no previous exposure. Ground zero.

Agile: n. A philosophy of project management where long term planning is replaced by short term thinking.

Bug Scrub: n. A meeting aimed at deciding which product issues can be swept under the carpet without too many people noticing.

Cloud Computing: n: A nice alliteration for an externally hosted computing model, created by people who felt that the term “IaaS” was just too ridiculous to say in any professional setting.

Some fun stuff there. :)

Video cards are entirely driven by games. It's gamers that have made video cards so powerful and cheap.

But what drove games? Microsoft. They were a game manufacturer, then a platform developer. They made their platform friendly for developers to make games.

Microsoft is still very developer-centric. They go to extreme lengths to encourage developers. They have the best IDE in the world, and you can get it for free!

Sure, Apple has Xcode, but if you've used it, it sure as guns isn't anywhere near as nice to use as Visual Studio.

The article is very much through Apple-colored glasses. But he does make some good points. Apple computers were better than DOS. That's a given.

Meh... The new battle is in the smartphone and tablet space. Look like Apple is poised to lose that battle as well.
