+1 for TopStyle.  Its grown to more than the CSS editor it was, and is a full fledged editor with excellent CSS capabilities.  I've used Stylizer also- didn't like it as much as TopStyle.

NOTE: Title still looks blank to me...

Eh?  I use Windows 7 x86 and it does work.  What kind of error are you getting?

I didn't think this is a problem with some versions.

Sorry - I was under the impression that you were arguing that eBooks would replace paper books. If I am wrong I apologise - I just can't see that ever happening. What I can see happening though is that some books will never make it to paper - which is a great pity.

Nah... I just hate *any* side arguing about any sort of statistical mean without the statistics to back it up.  Too many people take it at face value, and while its normally organizations that use this for their advantage maliciously, normal people do it all too often unthinking or assuming.  And in that one statement, some people's right to be asked about their opinion is undermined.

Just a pet peeve  :-[  Sorry if I went attack dog on it.

Are you seriously suggesting that the vast majority of people who read have bought an eReader of some kind or are even likely to?

Where did you get *that* suggestion from?  Just because people read in one medium, doesn't mean that's their preference.  My point is you can't know without hard data, and that's all I ever said.

I don't even see why these comparisons exist, personally.

Because if the likes of Amazon and Apple get their way they will stop the production of real books in favour of eBooks even though the vast majority of people prefer to buy and read paper books.

It has little to do with user preference and everything to do with the bottom line.

Again, there's that unqualified vast majority.  I don't think that *anyone* knows what the vast majority like.  Especially considering that many people don't even *like* to read.  It doesn't matter.  Let the market take care of itself.  If the vast majority like to read dead tree pubs, then the ereaders will die off.  If not, then the books will die off.  If they like both, then make money off both and provide what they like.  And let the faceless majority speak for itself, IMO.

...for any length of time reading the printed book is far kinder on the eyes.

+1
Subjective both ways.

+ You can stick your fingers in the previous page to quickly zip back, or several fingers in parts of the book to quickly zip between them. e.g. You look up a reference in the index, then stick your fingers in different sections of the book where that reference occurs, then zip between them. You cannot do that in an ebook.

- Ok, there are tools to help you do that, but they are nowhere near as fast as flipping with your fingers. Has anyone ever tried to flip more than a single page in an ebook reader? It's mind numbingly painful. Flipping 1 page is bad enough. Flipping more than one page is idiotic. You just cannot do it. Frame rates and software speeds are far too slow. It cannot be done *reasonably* right now. (This should change in the future.)
Need to find a non-indexed phrase?  Which one wins there?  And then keep searching?

+ You can quickly markup a book with pen, pencil, or highlighter in ways that are faster, easier and more intuitive than with some software tools. e.g. Underline some text, highlight one of the words, write a note in the margin, and draw a quick figure.

- The software tools available right now are slow an unintuitive. Writing with your hand is simply far more versatile than with software. Until there is intelligent software *and hardware* that will let you *write* and *draw* and *underline* and *highlight* with nothing more than your finger, paper books will be superior. (I mean that the hardware needs to allow sophisticated input, and the software needs to understand that, and translate intentions properly so that it can recognize handwriting and type that as text. Graffiti anyone? :) )
Depends on the format.  PDF I mark up just as easily... and I can *erase* if I need to.

My point is that a lot of this is subjective- I don't even see why these comparisons exist, personally.

Living Room / Re: Newb - Question about monitoring activity on a network
« Last post by wraith808 on October 21, 2011, 03:22 PM »
There's a couple of articles on eHow.com that show how to do this for free... not the best tools, but they work:

Monitoring Each Computer Separately
Monitoring the network from a central computer
Monitor Network usage per computer

Other free software I've found that might help in one way or another...

IPAudit
iTrafficMonitor
Fiddler
Networx

None of these are "fire and forget"; you'll have to do some work.  If you want something that just monitors (and something that monitors non-pc devices), I think you'll have to pay for it.

2. After I download a 1GB+ install, I expect to be able to keep it to install later (especially non-DRM'd items).  It actually *deletes* the root install program, i.e. if you run setup.exe to set something up, it *deletes* setup.exe once you install.  A way around that is to copy the file as it's downloading/running, but really, why?

i'm a steam user too but there has been an occasion where i used the gamersgate installer (thanks to a generous DoCo member). that installer had an option to "keep temporary files", so i don't know whether it's the norm or exception. maybe this can help you.

I chose that option.  That's how I got the 1GB of files still on my machine- but no installer. :(

When San Andreas came out, I realized that I was no longer interested in the series because I had matured.

That's the statement.  The gameplay, over the top violence, and over the top language is grating after a while above a certain maturity level in my opinion.

Bizarre... Why would anyone write their installer to behave like malware like that? Are most gamers that uneducated that they don't know enough to delete large installers if they run out of space? I wouldn't think so.

It's even worse than that... Let's say you download a non-single-file installer, i.e. it has a setup.exe and supporting files, with the setup.exe being less than a meg, and the entire install being 1GB+.  It deletes *only* the setup.exe file, leaving 1GB+ of useless files on your disk.  I say again... WTF?

Is GTA any good? Never played any of them.

The game is good, but your enjoyment will *really* depend on what you like.  There is a story, but you're not constrained to it at all.  It's *very* open world, and your activities vary (though most are illegal).  Driving and jacking cars is of course a big part of it (third person view), though you have missions that do involve activities on foot (beating people up and killing people for the most part).  Very good production qualities (though many of the later become more of the same IMO), but after a while, it became just "more of the same", especially after you get past shock value.  JMO, and this refers to III on.

Ah, I see.  I hadn't actually downloaded or installed them yet.  I was just going off of what I'd read about there being no third-party client involved.

Don't get me wrong... I like GG, and have a lot of software through them.  It's just that there's no silver bullet to these services, and I somehow doubt that there ever will be.  :(

Create a circle, name it .Save (".Read Later," ".Keep These," or whatever) with a period at the beginning so that it will show up first. Copy yourself to that circle. Then simply 'share' those posts you want to revisit later. (Although it'd be nice if there were a button for this. I think there's an extension, but I didn't try it.)

Nice.  Thanks!

UPDATE: so after you posted this, I looked into a couple of ways to integrate G+ with other services using the e-mail function.

Evernote: I created an evernote circle, and added the e-mail address associated with adding notes via e-mail (see evernote settings) to the circle.  Works perfectly!

Read It Later: RIL actually has an e-mail function- send the e-mail to [email protected].  But you have to verify the e-mail address that notes will be coming from, and since G+ alerts are sent from a no-reply e-mail (unique to your profile, but still...) there's no way to verify it.  I posted a support ticket on it to see if there's a way around that.

That's a great deal and I love the fact that these are stand-alone downloads i.e. no need for a third-party client running all the time.  Steam, I'm looking at you....   >:(

Personally, I hate gamersgate's install process, and prefer Steam's.

How do I hate thee, let me count the ways:
1. I've had problems with the resume of their download client (a) with network interruption and (b) when I've had to press pause.
3. More games on GG include DRM than Steam (many that rely on steam for their DRM resort to SecureROM or other virus-like DRM alternatives)
4. There's no way to queue up downloads/installs.
5. No set way to get updates- sometimes they are separate files, and sometimes they update the original, and sometimes, there just aren't any updates.

So yeah, YMMV.  I love steam being integrated, and it doesn't use that much memory, so leaving it running isn't a big deal to me.  Origin and Impulse (or whatever they're calling it now) are a bit more intrusive, and Desura is pretty unstable, so I don't like those as much.

But today I click on my newsfeed and see tumbleweed blowing through the barren, blank page. It’s a vast and empty wasteland, full of people who signed up but never actually stuck around to figure out how things worked in this new part of town. One simple click takes me back to Facebook, and my wall is flooded with updates and pictures from 400+ friends. This just isn’t a contest, and it never will be.

A Eulogy for Google Plus

I think he was a bit premature, and his experience wasn't everone's experience.  Look at his profile *now* to see the difference...  he was comparing it to FB, and G+ isn't meant to be a competitor to FB, and never was.  The competition was in his mind alone... people have been iterating this fact more months now.  And the iteration of features is more reasoned than FB's throw stuff at you approach.   The only thing G+ needs in my opinion is a way to save articles to read for later, a la Read it Later or InstaPaper; though I can click through on the ones that are link sharing, sometimes there's something directly on G+ that I want to read later.

UPDATE:

Two later responses from the same author-
A Second Chance for Google+
The Rise of the Google+ Faithful

At this point, I don't know if the other article was to gain followers/attention on Google+  :o

A couple of pointed responses to his first article.

(At least it was going to be a couple of links... the permalink function isn't working.  But click on page 4 and there's a really good rebuttal)

« Last post by wraith808 on October 17, 2011, 03:03 PM »
I don't know of an alternative, but at least I know not to upgrade.  I also use eReader, but I see that it's gone... if you ever downloaded it, you might try to recover it, because it supports most if not all of the formats stanza did, and has a minimal interface.

UPDATE: I just realized that I hadn't opened stanza on my new phone- I get the same problems unfortunately.

Some threads on the support forum (no answers of course):
http://getsatisfacti...for_the_iphone_ios_5
http://getsatisfacti..._unhandled_exception

One of them recommends readMe, which I hadn't heard of... I'm happy with eReader (though it doesn't support o'reilly like stanza did, so that's a bummer), but I might check this one out too.

Right now, Amazon is playing a very dangerous game. In that they are now setting themselves up as business rivals to existing publishers, Amazon could soon find itself out of the book market if all the big players decided to pull and go exclusively with Nook or Apple.

Not as dangerous as it may seem.  This isn't truly new- only the level of organization put to it is a new factor.  Both Amazon and Barnes and Noble (and other outlets also) have had a self-publishing arm for a while.  The recruitment and support put behind it are new factors, but just an incremental one, not revolutionary, and I don't think there's danger because of that factor.

I release as donationware on the offchance that someone decides to give something, more than with any expectation that this will happen.  Even though I get a lot of downloads, I've gotten very few donations.  Heck, I released as postcardware (without requiring a postcard even... just an e-mail) before finding this site and putting the donation part in there, and received exactly 3 e-mails.  If people won't send e-mails, why would they pay?

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR not a commonly downloaded program?
« Last post by wraith808 on October 16, 2011, 08:03 AM »
I would like to further elaborate that AS trust becomes a commodity on the internet, the ability for small freeware authors to 'just author' without going through h*ll is lessened, and thus DonationCoder, by offering signing of donationware for donationware authors, could represent a substantially more compelling business model than it does today. You have the inherent trust, earned certificate trust, plus community exposure, as enticements. It would be a great platform from which new donationware could be launched.

Wouldn't that also put an onus on DC to vet these software programs?  I don't think there is an official policy regarding that in place now, but it would seem that this would have to change.

UPDATE: I downloaded software from my site (and I'm sure that I don't get as much traffic as even FARR, let alone the other software from DC), and I didn't get that message.  It could be as simple as the fact that my programs don't have installers (just executables in zip files), but I wouldn't think that they'd not scan zips, would they?
7875
I presume this report of IE suggesting deletion of FARR (as it is "not commonly downloaded" lol) would fit in the forum?

FARR not a commonly downloaded program?

No, because it is your fault for not having a digital cert... which costs YEARLY 1/4 of your reported MONTHLY operational costs. It is not 1996 anymore, the reality is every developer should have a cert. Sorry to be so harsh, just telling it like it is.

For free software?  Really?  And it's the person's fault?  I'd think that for software that doesn't make money, there would be an option that's doesn't incur a yearly cost.  And that's how it is IMO.
