Happy thanksgiving for all, and ditto on what Deo said.  This is a great community, and I'm thankful for it and all of the people that make it up.  Be safe everyone traveling, and good times with friends and family to all.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Scrivener for Windows Discounts for November 2011
« Last post by wraith808 on November 24, 2011, 08:55 AM »
I really like many of their UX ideas, and the fact that they use rtf and files instead of a proprietary binary blob.

The big problem I have with scrivener is that it seems custom-built to prevent sharing. Just read the horror stories on using dropbox... you need to close it on one computer to start working on another. And getting comments from another person not using scrivener means a roundtrip to word format or similar.

Writing outliner, their main competitor, has the 'proprietary binary blob' problem (an sqlite db, but still, not files that you can share without exporting first). However the author is going through a full rewrite that will make it use 'normal' files, which would make it preferable for me.

That's not a problem with scrivener, that's a problem with the way that dropbox handles files.  There was previously something to do with the resource fork on the mac and that causing issues as dropbox didn't sync that, but that's fixed as of dropbox 0.8.  There's another problem in that scrivener has the files open all the time, and dropbox does some pretty wonky things with those, like renaming files to myfilename-currentcomputername.ext.  Other apps that keep files open have the same problem- try using a sync program with a live visual studio project, and you'll see the fireworks start.  Use scrivener locally, sync that to dropbox, then use it locally somewhere else works.  Some apps just aren't compatible with having multiple copies editing the same file at the same time because they keep a lock.  That's why word has that sharing setting that's been getting better over the years.

There's also the alternative that they put in to address this- using simplenote.  Simplenote is a free service, and the syncing with Scrivener works.  The reason this works is that the syncing is controlled.  I'm not sure if multiple people have the same note open how that particular problem is resolved.  But for syncing your own project across multiple computers, it's gold.  And I hope that they put it in the windows version soon!

I also have and use writing outliner, and I think that even once he does a rewrite to get rid of the proprietary slob problem, you'll see the same problem.  It's the workflow, not the app.

Here's another tool to help struggling writers:

http://writtenkitten.net/

For every 100 words you write, you are rewarded with an image of a cute kitten. Aww! :-*

Then there's also writeordie.com- where you're punished if you don't continue to write for your time limit.  As long as you continuously type (with a configurable grace period) you're fine.  When you stop, you either get a mild punishment (a message box), a moderate one (an unpleasant sound), or a severe one (your work starts unwriting itself).  Pretty hardcore!

Hmm..  I tried to purchase it with the discount and it returns an error saying I needed something to qualify. So I re-read the discount wording, then tried it again, this time successfully without any errors. Not sure what the problem was, other than the fact their eCommerce site is Esellerate, which can be weird at times.

The code is NANOWRIMO- that might have been the problem.  I just purchased today after giving in to the inevitability of not making the 50k words, and I c&p from your post... and it didn't work.  So I did a search for scrivener for windows nanowrimo, and it brought up the promotion page, where I saw the difference.

Sometimes it seems that google products are a testbed for other products, or they become so if they are not successful.  Wave was a testbed for G+ IMO.

Wait...there is an end of the year Steam sale?  :o

Yup... usually the week between Christmas and New Year's.

Stop it!  Just STOP IT PLEASE!

How am I ever going to save my for the Steam end of year sellathon if you people keep tempting me this way ?

Thanks for the reminder. :)  I usually spend quite a pretty penny at the end of the year...  :-[

AO is a nice outliner. But I don't see anything in it that's compelling enough to justify the price or upgrade policy when there are so many other products out there that offer as much for less.

+1 Agreed.

That's the reason that I'm hesitating...

Looks OK, but the public comp I often use does not have .NET installed.

Unfortunately, there's not really anything that can be done about this.

Although .NET framework is still needed, it would be nice to see if this requirement can be lowered a bit with framework version number.
Maybe this application does not utilize full potential of .NET 4.0 or even 3.0 and can require 2.0 only (or better: separate EXE files for 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 if it is possible).

The reason behind this suggestion: I saw few public computers with .NET 2.0 available thanks to ATI Catalyst Control Center.
-fenixproductions (November 20, 2011, 06:41 PM)

Speaking as a .NET programmer, it's not just the potential, it's the way you program.  I look back to even .NET 3.5 with trepidation, because a lot of the constructs that I use now wouldn't work.  It's the same way as WPF vs WinForms... I could go back, but it would be a major adjustment.  A lot of people think it's just feature set or bells and whistles, but it's not as simple as that IMO.

The biggest issue I have is that I got most of my books I read in stanza from somewhere other than an organized store, so most of them didn't have the book information.  I entered all of them at varying times over a year.  I was almost done!

...and now I'm back to square one...  :'(

Ten free tools to better organize your desktop icons

... of course, I just don't use my desktop ...

ZuluPad is cheap, easy, and has simple online syncing if you need it.  The original ZuluPad is open source, but I'd go for the pro version- it's only $15 (I paid full price in spite of a DC discount at the time)

Living Room / Re: multiple monitors vs large monitor?
« Last post by wraith808 on November 16, 2011, 03:54 PM »
With multiple monitors you can more easily layout and maximize different applications on different monitors (though a program like GridMove helps a lot if you are using one big one).

Or (with a single monitor) consider using Linux since multiple desktops are both the norm - and work quite well in that environment. (Good thing too since multi-monitor setups can still get annoyingly tricky on some Linux boxes. It's gotten better recently. But it can still be a headache depending on the graphic card selected.)

There are a couple of good multi-desktop programs for Windows too - AltDesk was the one that I found I liked most.  (Though I recently saw the mac implementation and had to admit it was pretty slick).

I've got two 17" monitors at home, and one 22" widescreen monitor here at work. When I'm at work, I really miss the two 17s ... And when I'm at home, I never miss the 22.

I'd say it depends on the size and the use.  For those sizes, I can see why you'd feel that way.  But I have a 25" at home, and with Windows 7 and the snap to edge of screen, I don't miss the 2-17" monitors from work.

(That said, now I have my laptop screen, a 24", and 2-17" monitors at work on 2 separate computers using multiplicity... *that* is great!)

It's not really a store, i.e. Indie Games for the PC...Direct from the developers!

Any real "store" takes a cut.  I'm not sure what the rates are- only that they are greater than zero.  Direct from the developers - they get all of their money.  I'm trying to see how many of them let you claim the game on Steam... I don't think they do, but I was just wondering...

« Last post by wraith808 on November 14, 2011, 04:32 AM »
I received an e-mail from Cliff Harris of Positech games, makers of Gratuitous Space Battles and other indie games:

Today marks the first day of the first two-week 'Show Me The Sales' promotion!
Hosted by the online indie game database at www.showmethegames.com, 'Show Me The Sales' is a collection of indie game developers who are each offering substantial discounts on their games over the next two weeks. Unlike any other games bundle or sale, SMTS is a collection of sales hosted directly by the developers, acting just as a directory of discounts, so you still buy the game direct from the individual developer, and the developer gets to keep all of the money.
Just to emphasise that, ShowMeTheGames takes NOTHING from any of the sales, or the developers.

The Show Me The Sales website is here:
http://www.showmethegames.com/sales.php

And it runs from 14th to the 28th of November. Games on discount include Scoregasm, Gratuitous Space Battles, SPAZ, project Aftermath and lots more. Plus, every game has it's own youtube-embedded video for you to check them out.

First of all, I'd not heard of Show Me The Games... pretty cool idea!  And the games that are on sale look quite tempting...

DC Gamer Club / Re: Steam Servers Hacked
« Last post by wraith808 on November 11, 2011, 09:20 AM »
I got tired enough of all the reported hacking of commerce sites that I opened up a separate no-fee checking account and got one of those MasterMoney debit cards to go with it. It's a special purpose account that is only used for online purchases. Most times it has a $10 balance. Anytime I want to buy something, I just transfer sufficient funds over to it from our regular account and use the MasterMoney card to make the purchase. No matter who gets hacked, or how badly, my maximum exposure is limited to what's usually in the account. Which is $10. So an NSF/overdraft notice would immediately alert me somebody's playing games.

And unlike announcements about hacked customer accounts, overdraft notices are ALWAYS sent out very promptly. No need to wait for a bank or website to 'fess up.

And because it's not a charge card, I can't run up a some huge high-interest balance I'll need to figure out how to pay for.  Automatic fiscal responsibility right there! Love it.

Even better.  Prepaid/Greendot card.  And the steam wallet facilitates this also.  Not just for hacking- but for budgeting, and cutting down on impulse purchases. :)

It's still there.  If you're not *sure* but want to notify someone, I did find a place to post it.

You take a diff of the pages like so:

and post the URL with your concerns.

I changed all my passwords to unique passwords after the Gawker fiasco, so I'm not too concerned about the damage done here. Just gotta change my Steam password and the forum password once the forums are back up.

Yeah... I just can't bring myself to manage that many passwords.

Me neither. That's why I use a password manager.

I do too.  I still can't bring myself to manage that many passwords.  :-[  Especially since each must be entered into the appropriate game program each time in the case of MMOs- and I play a lot of them.

So, has the update insanity settled down enough for someone that always waits because he doesn't like farting around with software updates that break things?

-- Haven't updated to iOS 5 for that exact reason -- stuff breaks.

Is it safe enough now?

*I* haven't updated my iPad.  I only have iOS5 because I got an iPhone 4S (out of need this early- my prior phone got wet)
