Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Listary Pro for only $9.95 on Friday 19 October
« Last post by rjbull on October 19, 2012, 03:30 PM »
I would presume that if Listary Pro integrates with (or "supports") Windows Explorer, then it should be able to integrate with any Explorer replacement tool - e.g., such as Total Commander or xplorer².

As I said above, the features that I would have found useful in Listary Pro are already incorporated into xplorer², so, in my case, using Listary Pro would be adding unnecessary/redundant functionality.

I'm wondering if maybe you've missed some of Listary's valuable features?  Some of the things I like:
  • Switch any standard File Open/Save dialog to a favourite folder, either global or per-application.
  • Switch any standard File Open/Save dialog to whatever folder the active pane in Total Commander is pointing to.
  • Total Commander support means favourites configured only within TC itself are included in Listary's favourites list.
  • Help with searching any standard Windows list, not just file lists; e.g. entries in a folder in LinkStash, my links manager.

The first three of those are really about Listary acting as a helper application that harnesses the power of a decent, agile file manager and puts it to work as directly as possible within Windows' knuckle-dragging standard File Open/Save dialog.  The last aids file finding in Open/Save dialogs and in Windows Explorer.  TC and other good file managers are good at finding/displaying particular files in and of themselves, but Listary usefully beefs up Windows Explorer if that's all you have.  Looking at the video again, I realise there are plenty of other good features I'm not using yet...

I don't use Listary - though I have trialled it - because I use xplorer² from
Listary Pro's Configuration -> Compatibility tab says it will work with xplorer², but I don't have xplorer² so don't quite know what that means.

The full list of supported applications (Listary Pro 3.51.858) is:

Desktop
Windows 7 Jump List
Total Commander
XYplorer
Directory Opus
xplorer2
7-Zip
WinRAR
FileZilla

Total Commander integration is wonderful.

@David.P; Just to check, you are Saving the file first, before Alt-Tabbing back to the Web form?

I should add, TEA fails to transfer text one way or the other for me fairly frequently, but I can't get a handle on it.  If it doesn't transfer text back the the Web form, I often add a space, backspace over it again - so the editor thinks the file's been changed - re-save it, and usually the next Alt-Tab back again transfers the text.

It seems to work better with some forums than others.  DC works well.  Fountain Pen Network, not so well.

propietary firefox ? It's not free ?

I think David.P meant that Firefox has proprietary = non-standard Open/Save dialogs?  Listary Pro does work with Firefox dialogs, as I see David.P has already found  :)

Listary comes in two versions, free and payware.  Take a look at the Listary vs. Listary Pro – Comparison List

It's low-cost and invaluable anyway, and at the Bits du Jour price it's unmissable.

Do you mean, a simple way to mark all files with a given extension for further action?  That's trivial with Total Commander.  Put the cursor on one such file, press Num+, and all files with the same extension are marked.  Or, in ZTreeWin, log a directory, pick one such file, press Alt-T, E.  Or, in XYplorer, it's Ctrl+Alt+M.

Curt  :-[   @Contro, have you tried Listary?  You do need the payware Pro version for this, but it's soon to be on offer on Bits du Jour, as reported by its author here: Listary Pro for only $9.95 on Friday 19 October.

You know what thing we need to add to our "kit" of tools recommended for dealing with data loss situations is: A second PC.
+1.  And maybe a second router too.  When my router failed, it was a pain to even order another one.  Without Internet access, it's getting very hard to do anything with computers, from finding help to ordering parts.

have a FULL DRIVE BACKUP on an external hard drive that you can restore

How many levels of old backups is it recommended to keep?

Living Room / Re: DC Sci Fi Book Club!

I sorta think Steampunk is a nice interlude to my traditional problem with classical High Fantasy.
I'd welcome a DC Fantasy Book Club as well  :)  If by "High Fantasy" you mean the kind of stories that start from the general area of "Morte d'Arthur" and Tolkien, don't overlook the wealth of non-High Fantasies.  See this post by Iphigenie in the Re: What books are you reading? thread, and my reply to it.

Rather depends on what you mean by "favourite:" books you like, or books you respect?  It's possible not to be both.

Of traditional SF, I reckon Fred Pohl's Gateway takes some beating.  Off the top of my head, others I respect include Alfred Bester's Tiger! Tiger! and The Demolished Man, and Chtistopher Priest's Inverted World.  Note respect; I don't say any of these are particularly comfortable reading.

Streampunk isn't a genre I've consciously explored, but I'd suggest a look at Chris Wooding's "Tales of the Ketty Jay" series, which start with Retribution Falls.  I'd classify them as fantasy wearing an SF leather jacket with an eagle on the back...  ;)  For all the swashbuckling, edgy violence, humour and yes, sheer silliness, the abiding interest is in the character development, how this completely dysfunctional crew (even the ship's cat) ended up aboard the Ketty Jay, what their back stories are, and what they do about it.  Terrific entertainment.  Another series worth looking at is Philip Reeve's "Hungry City Chronicles," which start with Mortal Engines.  These are older children/YA, but very entertaining, set in a post-apocalypse far future where some technologies are being reinvented.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to force Firefox to allow redirection?
« Last post by rjbull on October 07, 2012, 02:05 PM »
Thanks, Curt!  I had to uncheck that box.  What I would like, though, is for default behaviour to be to warn about redirection, except on specified sites.

General Software Discussion / How to force Firefox to allow redirection?
« Last post by rjbull on October 05, 2012, 04:18 PM »
I'm using Firefox 15.0.1.  It doesn't automatically allow a page to redirect to another page, presumably as a security measure.  I use some forums, e.g. Notefrog, Fountain Pen Network, which use auto-redirection a lot.  Firefox's behaviour becomes annoying when, e.g., I do a search, open several new tabs from the search results, then find I have to specifically Allow each page to redirect.  I did a (very) quick Google, but only turned up similar mild complaints.

Please, is there any way to force Firefox to automatically allow redirections in specified domains?

I searched for a while to find folder monitoring programs, there are probably a couple of threads here somewhere.

In Re: Recommend directory tracker?, patteo mentioned Log Monitor, which I believe mouser has used.  More details and suggestions here: Software to send email when a folder content changes and here: DONE: folder monitor with customizable action and here: Searching a "Filesystem based event trigger tool"

But the solution you found yourself seems elegant and effective, the more so for not entailing extra cost.

Is that all freeware?
Well, it's apparently FreeAsInBeer, because the right side of the home page says " Its Free! ".
Also see bottom of Defrag page, http://www.puransoft...om/Puran-Defrag.html under Version History:
24 August 2012    Version 7.5 Puran Defrag is now free for commercial use too. Added recommended schedules.

I was in the Kamieskroon Hotel in the Namaqualand area of South Africa's Cape Province once, on a photographic holiday.  At the end of the week, the hotelier politely offered us "Kamieskroon olives."  They turned out to be grapes...  pickled in brandy  :)  Definitely not for kids!

I upgraded to RoboForm 7 for its convenience, but, like others on DC, I always start from KeePass.  That way I always have a free, portable system that I can export from if necessary.  Quite a few plugins are available for extra convenience and form-filling with KeePass.

Is KeYpass a typo for KeePass, or a different program?

Other possible approaches:

SuRun...  Super User Run - free

Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) - free; this has been used to run PowerPro in Win7, for example

Run As Admin Controller, RAAC: Start Programs with Full Administrative Privileges - cheap payware

Screenshot Captor / Re: My experiences with Screenshot Captor
« Last post by rjbull on September 11, 2012, 03:08 PM »
I have come to accept recently that there is probably another kind of workflow that Screenshot Captor should support, and that is an (optional) floating toolbar which lets you choose the kind of capture, and what to do after the capture, and a button to perform it.  Personally I would never use such a feature and would encourage anyone who takes lots of screenshots to learn the capture hotkeys instead, but I do accept that such a Quick Capture floating toolbar would server a need, so I am going to be adding it.
I suspect the need most likely to be served is where you have hotkey conflicts with other programs, especially ones you use more often.  In that special case, an alternative method would be welcome.

I heard that, back when genetic engineering was hot and every hastily-created new company had to have some element of "genetic" in its name, the Italian government wanted to set up a state one.  It was to have been called "Genitalia."

In similar vein, there's a story that when Idi Amin was megalomaniac dictator of Uganda, he hatched a plan to rename Uganda "Idiland."  Until some brave soul pointed out that people who live in Cyprus are called "Cypriots"...
