Living Room / Re: How to get the perfect (looking) résumé / CV

This is useful, some good tips thanks

I just received 3 (yep 3,  count em, talking of bloat) about new 'features' to raxco's perfect disk defreagging thing.  It now includes disk cleaning, registry cleaning windows tweaking all sorts of stuff which frankly i dont want.  I wanted a good defragging thing, and the one suppllied with windows had completely stopped working on both my desk and laptop.  I spose if you were just setting it all up an all in one program like that might be good but usually 1 bit of them seems to work and work well and the rest, well who knows.

Keep the bits seperate for those of us who want seperate bits, or maybe go down the firefox path and have a perfectly usable product as is but that can be tweaked to your preferences through add on, extensions whatever IF you want to
Just my 1/2 cents worh, needed a rant lol

Sad but true, i used star office, which is provided free to students at the university i go to, for a semester but i then went back to M$ office just because of a few little things in the formatting and so on that had taken me an age to figure out in word and i couldnt get to work in star, though i'm pretty sure the functionality was there i just couldnt work it  :-[ and also the documents produced by the teaching types there are all in some form of office document, word or powerpoint.  years of using word at work had paid off for microsoft, and then sending resumes and so on out, everyone uses word.  beaten by the numbers

General Software Discussion / Re: Firewalls - please, i can't be bothered.
« Last post by Grorgy on May 05, 2007, 11:23 PM »
I was about to give up on firewalls to, but in the end i went with Kaspersky internet suite which includes their antivirus.  I got it mainly for the antivirus but it was an option, for a bit more money, of course, to get the whole thing so i did.  Seems to work ok for me and i got so sick and tired of hunting for free stuff that didnt work the way i wanted, i want no interference mostly, but the options are there to do what you want.  It has a 30 day free trial.

Well, i do a little research for my studies, like mouser should do heaps more, but, im only an undergrad so i get away with it  ;)
I cruise around the windows customising sites, see if their is something of interest, now the initial fun of that has passed i dont do so much.  Look at the news and some stuff from places like major geeks and gizmos site, see if anything of interest.  Occasionally i dust off the stumble upon toolbar from the list and stumble a bit, that can be fun.  Check out this site :)  and most of all i chat to people on im or in chat rooms (usually in a game of some sort, but the game is secondary to me) havent played many single player type games for ages, used to play simcity and civilization.  Ohhhh and tinker with my computer, had to reload windows twice last week, ahh well, we learn by our mistakes they reckon  ;D
That seems to take most of my time.

Was checking the tech alert newsletter, seems all the free firewalls arent vista compatible yet, but they are working on it so hopefully it wont be long.

You can make google mmore or less ad free using some of the scripts written for firefox extensions greasemonkey and stylish and ad block plus also removes a lot of the ads on most sites, I find these particularly useful, and while i still get some ohe more sneaky folk, the ones that tell me they have t he best deals on (search term) overall its an improvement.

Dangerously socialist ideas popping up in here, lucky it isnt the 1950s and Mcarthy has gone  ;D

Clipboard Help+Spell / Memory Usage
« Last post by Grorgy on May 04, 2007, 04:37 AM »
This may be covered elsewhere but i couldnt see it so here i go

I have started playing around with this now and I have it set to start minimized.  Everything is fine and it works really well but until you maximise and then minimise it, i've discovered that the memory usage stays quite high, compared to what it is when normally lying at rest in that thing we dare not call a tray.

Just to let you know if you didnt and no one else has mentioned it.

Ohh i saw screenshot captor over at VNUNet.com , they gave it 5 stars and said what a great program it was

Can someone tell me what they think of the nLite program, it sounds interesting, and very useful, im reloading windows for the 2nd time in a week, this time over dialup and the updates are a killer, and while ive heard of setting up a disk like it does ive never known how, but if nlite is good then it sounds easy enough for me to cope with.  (of course now i probably wont break the thing for a while but at least i'd have a disk thats uptodate till now)

I got a couple of things from there, but its very unclear what you can do if you take a freebie and then have to reinstall it later, not all of the programs are freeware but shreware or commercial ones with some sort of limitation on them, like no support or upgrades that kind of thing.  I gave up checking after a while except to browse thru their freeware library if im after something specific.  So overall not for me but some may find it really good.

« Last post by Grorgy on April 24, 2007, 04:45 PM »
you get lots of options in the sounds and audio devices in control panel under the sounds tab you can turn on or off all sorts of stuff, or you could make it roar like a lion if you've got the clip or a cracking whip,  i hate sounds, apart from what i want to hear so i go for the no sound option, scares me half to death when it gets changed for some reason lol

i know this is all a bit old now, but i use a thing called Trayit! from http://www.teamcti.com/downloads.htm  its not real fancy like the ones reviewed, and it doesnt seem to work on all programs, but on most (probably just me lol) and it has the advantage of being free (not sure why they have it there, doesnt really seem to be part of their business). which ya gotta like ;D  I hope this may assist someone looking for such a beast.
cheers

I stand corrected  :) will see if i notice anything, bit difficult tho, i only get to use the broadband on weekends at the moment as i am away during the week so it seems fast no matter what and the dialup i'm using during the week always seems slow lol
798
I removed fasterfox to when i realised what it was doing, prefetching i'm thinking must increase the amount of bandwidth i use, and being on a satellite connection with 1gb limit b4 i pay 10cents a mb in downloads means i dont want to be getting stuff i may or may not want, i was stuck on a dialup service for so long that even a 264k satellite connection is sooo much faster anyway  :)

I grew up in central NSW and Sydney and lived and worked there until 15 or so yrs ago when i  moved to Melbourne with my job, I worked for Telstra, the phone company, firstly in customer service, you know the stuff, not letting people have time to pay their bills that kind of thing lol, then  in melbourne i worked with the development of their then new billing system, helping with design and testing of it, it was fun but came to an end and i was made redundant.

I now live in western victoria on a little block of land with a small house (5acres) and I am presently studying sociology and politics at a university near here.

I enjoy playing around with my computer as a user   of programs, i cant program at all, and I have recently been having a great time with window blinds and making my computer look pretty, well i like black so its very dark (finding a black theme that is actually usable is quite a hunt, so i've actually ended up with dark grey lol)

If you are interested I have an MSN space with a few photos in it, the blog hardly ever gets updated tho, http://grorgysplace.spaces.live.com/

just remember, its the weak and sick brain cells that die first so, like a buffalo herd, the deaths of those just improve the herd, so in time you become a leaner meaner thinking machine  :D
