Living Room / Re: Unsubscribe to 404
« Last post by mahesh2k on March 05, 2011, 12:50 AM »
Some email list marketers use thing called 'double opt-in'. This is a strategy to keep customer in your umbrella all the time. For example you unsubscribed from their [email protected] address and then they re-opt you at [email protected] address. You again unsubscribe and then they again opt you in manually. This is pain and so many subscribers simply report spam to that address to stop it from getting in inbox.

It's the style restrictions. I don't have a better style in mind but I don't feel like adopting any style either.
Don't worry about style for now, just try to write something that you like and then think about editing/proof reading stuff. I like reading your GTD stuff in GOE threads. You just need to make your points in simple possible ways (not too short or too long type of stuff like seth godin). By the way even mark foster suffers from this problem which you can see in his freely released book "how to make your dreams come true". I think his writing style in that book was very cryptic and it took me some time to understand his thoughts behind it.

I also think that the wiki approach of collating some of the useful knowledge that tends to get smeared throughout longer threads is a very good one

I think wiki is a must because this will save a lot of time on support threads. I also think wiki should be locked to chosen editors to avoid spam. I was also thinking about osqa instead of wiki but i guess others will not agree on stackoverflow like stuff here.

Do you, mahesh2k, phitsc (or anyone), really think people wouldnt come back because the theme isnt changed tellme or because it isnt 'modern'?

I don't think theme/software has anything to do with people signing up or donating. But it's just for improving the DC look and feel. I don't know if they'll stick or comeback to forums because of just modification in theme or upgrading to latest SMF. Most of the dev/designers/regular users of DC don't care about the looks of any forum. They stick to the forums for other reasons. But i can't say the same for new users or lurkers who rarely post on forums. Definitely worth to take poll on this point to know what new users think about look and feel of DC.

I agree SMF upgrade should be there.

Although a modern look is not essential for this site in my opinion, simply because the site lives from its great community, it certainly is a pity and could turn off new users.
We're using same theme and maybe same version for more than 2-3 years i guess.

How about support wiki pages for the software hosted on DC ? I mean there are many threads which are solving problems but it's always better to sort those problems/answers by version. Just a thought.

I'm planning to release wordpress theme, not sure if it's right for the fundraiser event.  :-|

There is registry entry for the adsense publisher that can be used to avoid accidental or demo clicks. If you're testing ads on your computer then definitely use that registry. It's explained in help section of adsense, there is a link as well(sorry unable to find it cause using mobile to reply here).

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Index Card System Organization
« Last post by mahesh2k on March 01, 2011, 11:10 AM »
I found mouser's index card system very effective but the problem is that there is no software version for it. I think it is possible to code it in simple way but with OCD mind here i have hard time doing that.

Anyone here know similar software or can point to such system ? :-)

One question, do you monitor Doco all the time or you found this from some other website monitoring apps data ? or from server admin ?

Couldn't surface 2 be used for future tablet pcs?

That depends on hardware pricing and manufacturer.

Recent add-on of google chrome even tracks what you don't want to see on results and filter ads based on that. History of web searches is also tracked based on IP address (thats the reason people use scroogle). OC is 1% evil compared to google.

If users stop paying for software or support it via donations then i see only OC or similar ad-supported modes as option to survive.

Obviously you are not familiar with the hosting industry, in that case I'll point you to a random google query result:
Blah. Blah. Do you even understand when hosting companies suggest you to move to dedicated server ? Obviously YOU are the one who is not familiar with hosting industry.
797
I can host such a site (which is basically now a low-activity forum) for $50 a month on a VPS
Really ? so you're saying 50$ VPS can stand direct download links of some softwares on this site ? plus member blogs/sites, member software and respective bandwidth usage ?
798
As someone who donated in the last two fundraising events ($20 and $15 under a different username) my point is:
If you paid donations, then why hide behind sockpuppet ? I mean there is no need to have sockpuppet to voice your genuine query. Unless ofcourse you have some no good intentions for starting some mess. It socks to see sockpuppet ya know.

Where did all the money go to?

Do checkout hosting fees of softlayer dedicated servers for 2 years. Do get info from mouser about two servers that DC owns and the size of dedicated servers( space and bandwidth). Once you get all this info then come and rant the same negative tune in two different threads.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ubuntu: Where Did the Love Go?

Ubuntu did experiments from release 7.10 onwards i guess. Apple like window theme skin was one experiment they still continue to do. It's just me or every software after some time tries to come up with more complexity than simplicity, in the name of feature richness.
