I'm sure if they had their way the only method we'd have to listen to music would be FM radios with integrated credit card swipe readers on the side.

General Software Discussion / Re: ReImage: online Windows repair!
« Last post by Innuendo on February 09, 2012, 02:20 PM »
Awfully steep, IMHO, for something I *might* need.

Besides, if/when my OS install becomes "unstable" or "corrupted" I lose faith in the whole foundation its built upon and do a fresh format/restore. Windows 7 makes it a trivial affair to do an OS reinstall & it also has the side benefit of getting rid of all the file & registry orphans/cruft that's been lying about from old software I no longer need or installed to try & discovered wasn't right for me.

...and what if what's wrong with your OS is keeping you from getting online to access this tool? If your PC is crashing/rebooting before it gets to the desktop then the usefulness of this service is severely diminished.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: PowerArchiver today on BitsDuJour
« Last post by Innuendo on February 09, 2012, 02:14 PM »
Well, to be honest, I never knew about the affiliation with Ashampoo until I was reading the comments on BitsDuJour. That's a very weird arrangement. I am not sure what it was supposed to accomplish. Hopefully, they'll refrain from doing business with that questionable company in the future.

The Outlook plugin (and the command line program) are free to registered users. I think there are nags if you don't have a valid PowerArchiver license.

The way I understand things, though, is that now that you have "upgraded" from the Ashampoo version you are now a <cough> "real" PowerArchiver owner & you are entitled to lifetime updates/upgrades from here on out.

Only thing you might want to do, Curt, is check and see what version you have a license for. There are three different product levels and you have to own Pro level or above to get the Outlook plugin & command-line program free.

$13.98 is a pittance & a lot cheaper than when I bought the "old" version of PowerArchiver Professional.

One of the best archiving programs on the planet is available at BitsDuJour today at a steep discount. You have your choice of English-only and International versions. The International version has over 20+ translations translating both the program itself *and* the  help files.

They offer a true lifetime updates program (waves to Curt). When new versions are released you will be entitled to them free of charge. I've been using PowerArchiver since 2005 and nothing has been able to surpass it in my eyes.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is WinZip still worth updating?
« Last post by Innuendo on February 09, 2012, 09:40 AM »
One thing that WinZip has that no other zip tool has (that I'm aware of), is the checkout feature.

FWIW, Nigel, PowerArchiver has the Checkout feature as well. Used to be every archiver in the land had that feature, but it seems it has gone the way of the dodo.

Things I do every day are generally archiving files as backups, for which I mostly use command-line archivers in batch files run from a scheduler.  What special features PowerArchiver do you need that aren't in other programs?

Keep in mind that I haven't kept up on the recent advances of other archivers, but when I made my purchase PowerArchiver was far and away the fastest of those I tested. The Explorer-integration is unmatched with everything you can possibly need in the context menu (you can add & remove to your tastes)and actually has aesthetically pleasing icon types for all your archives along with a very nice UI. That's a niggle, I know, but archiving programs are usually infamous for having very homely icons & a UI only a mother could love.

There's also functionality to email, burn, or FTP an archive without having to go through a ton of mouse-clicks. There's a backup scripting engine that will make short work of any backup jobs you might want to accomplish without having to resort to using the CLI, but there's a command-line component as well if you are interested.

What I believe to be a unique feature is a queue system that will, if you'd like, queue up numerous archive operations and work them in order so your hard drive isn't thrashing while you try to unarchive a dozen or so zip files all at once. Oh, lest I forget, there's also a preview panel that accepts Total Commander WCX plugins so it's extensible to recognizing more file types.

Of no use to me, but I'm sure it's important to others is Outlook integration and the international version has been translated into 20+ languages...not just the program, but the help file itself.

Something that they have been really excited about lately is they recently implemented a new auto-update system that will download the minimum amount of data needed to upgrade your install to the latest version. No more having to download the full installer unless you want to.

As of today's e-mail, still listed as "coming soon."

Today's the day. $13.98 for the English version & slightly higher for the International version. Lifetime updates.

I have registered copies of Total Commander (thanks to DC), Directory Opus, WinRAR (thanks to DC, again!), and I always return to PowerArchiver and has features not found in any other archiver program. I archive/unarchive a LOT of stuff every day & no other tool is as efficient based on my workflow.

It sports a lifetime license & it's also FIPS 140-2 certified if you're in a position that requires such.

BitsDuJour is supposed to have their flagship product on sale for a pittance coming soon.

Oh, it's not just this guy. Big publishers like EA and UbiSoft are speaking out against used games and trying their best to make it so it's not worth buying a game used.

Despicable.

Random thought about a random addon to what's probably a decent program....

An addon for Windows Mobile/Pocket PC? They might want to think about upgrading that to something that will support modern mobile phones.

I strongly recommend anyone who has ever wondered if there was a better way to manipulate and manage files than Windows Explorer to pick this up today & see that there is an easier way to perform any file management tasks that one could imagine.

However, anyone who has delved into the customizability of Total Commander or Directory Opus is not going to satisfied with this one, but these are advanced file managers for the tweakers, perfectionists & OCD-prone who demand the most powerful tool(s) for a job. XYPlorer (and xplorer2) are great intermediate level file managers that will satisfy most, sane people.

Tranglos upgraded to Firefox 9? So that's why Firefox 10 was then released. ;)

On a more serious note, Firefox 10 marks the start of a new era where addons/extensions are not automatically disabled just because the browser version does not automatically match an arbitrary number in an .rdf file. Hopefully, this is the first step on the road to putting threads like this behind us.

The dirty little secret of those real-time monitoring tools is they don't monitor everything that could go wrong with a drive. There are vulnerable parts that there's just no way to monitor.

Running a monitor is better than nothing, of course, but don't think just because you do you'll always get a heads up when disaster is going to strike.

General Software Discussion / Re: Question regarding the "Sandboxie" program
« Last post by Innuendo on January 20, 2012, 01:08 PM »
Sandboxie has always been designed to keep things in & not keep things out. Usually if one creates or installs something outside of a sandbox one is usually comfortable and confident in those changes and wishes those to be propagated system-wide.

Oh, this is exciting....I just tried it as well. My first attempt was to just copy a shortcut on my desktop twice into a randomly created folder. My result was the *opposite* of Ath's screenshot above (the icon was present next to Copy and Replace with no icon next to Don't Copy).

My second attempt was copying a shortcut from the Start Menu into that folder twice. The result of that experiment was that there wasn't an icon next to either Copy and Replace *or* Don't Copy! Three cheers for consistency, eh?  ;D

And now there's one more reason on my list why I don't and won't use Windows Explorer for file management.

Define 'unstable', please. You might have something as simple as a misbehaving driver or corrupt OS file somewhere.

Windows 7 is a magical thing. It's very adept when it comes to plug and play. Have you just tried leaving the on-board graphics enabled to see if it hinders you in any way? You might be pleasantly surprised.

(Three cheers for the Amiga, btw!)

Thanks, Dirhael & tomos. Your posts are prime examples of why I started this thread. They each contain functionality that I can see myself using every day & while I'm sure I will run across that functionality in the docs or on the forums, who knows how long I'd have to delve before finding it?

Thanks for the tips!

I don't know how beefy of a graphics card you'll be needing, Stephen, but if your needs are modest there are lots of tiny/fanless cards geared for the HTPC market that might fit your needs and they are reasonably priced as well.

Two more things I recommend if u have the time.

Forum users here *always* have the time for a good recommendation.

1) go thru the OPTIONS/various SETTINGS thoroughly and you will get a better idea of what you can do.  I had to go thru a minimum of 3 times to start grasping it all.

This is so true! There's already been a couple times I wished DOpus would do certain things a different way only to discover that there was a setting I overlooked on previous runs through the options. The ability to search the options panel is a huge help, but sometimes it takes a couple tries to put in the right keyword for the search to bring up what you want.

Knowing which specific examples to give is hard because you don't know what people do all day with their computers. And what's amazingly useful to one person often looks utterly pointless and stupid to another person.

And I concede that point. However, and maybe I am just different than everyone else, but I like to see what people have done and so what if it looks pointless to my uses? More often than not I can look at what they have accomplished and think to myself, "Well, I have no use for that. However....I can take what they have done, change this or that, and adapt it to my workflow easily enough." all without having to totally reinvent the wheel.

That was why I wrote my "Getting to Know..." guide back in the day. (Hopefully I'll get around to updating that one of these years. Always end up writing code instead.)

Which I have read, but understand that I was pleased when playful (a user on the DOpus forums) approached me and let me read his new article on configuring DOpus. It takes you from a blank slate step-by-step to building a full-featured DOpus configuration. It's a great companion piece to the existing tutorials out there & it's let me take what I want from it and leave what I don't behind.

I can't argue with that. The community's willingness/ability to write plugins was overestimated. Some people have written viewer/thumbnail plugins for Opus but most of the time people look to us to do it (but there's only so much we can do at a time). Total Commander is the only file manager that seems to get a lot of love from plugin developers, for whatever reason, but I think we've got the important stuff covered now; it just took us a while to write all that code ourselves. :)

Total Commander and the now-defunct FAR file manager have/had extremely dedicated users from east European countries and it seems like east European countries must begin teaching coding in kindergarten because there's just a ferocious amount of talent coming from those people. What other file manager in the world offers a plugin to read Xbox game discs? It's crazy.

And you *do* have "the important stuff covered now." I'm a file manager addict & I used every version of DOpus for the Amiga. I've also closely scrutinized every version released for Windows. I've always wanted to buy, but a lot of that 'important stuff' wasn't covered until v10 was finally released.

I don't know why DOpus never caught on with that market segment. Maybe DOpus's pricing is too high for their economies or if the eastern Europeans just prefer the old Norton-style file managers.

I should also mention Steve Banham for starting the Opus Resource Centre web forums (which I admin these days, but Steve got the ball rolling and ran it for years first), which replaced the old user-to-user mailing list that GPSoftware used to run.

I stand corrected. However, I do stand by my statement that you, and those who came before you, have played a large part in DOpus's success. Without you tirelessly answering questions from users everyday I'm sure DOpus would not be enjoying the success it is.
