I don’t think you can use a screen with e-ink technology as a digitizer - or touch screen. Looking for where I read this; when I find it I'll post back with the link.

Oshyan,

I had the same problem with Elements 6 when I had it installed a couple of years ago. I found I could not just set up a directory as my "library". It didn't offer any "import library" or "monitor folders" options. You had to import individual files or folders whenever you wanted to work on them. I have difficulty working like that since every photo program I have used before allows a database or library to be set up.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outlining software recommendations?

Writing Outliner for MS Word is 29.00 today only on Bits du Jour.  I haven't used it, but I'm leaning towards getting it.  I don't know if it will satisfy your needs, but I figured it might be worth a look for you too.

I pondered this one but in the end decided not to spend that much. Office 2007 is really tough on outlining. They removed the old formats and now you basically have to build a "style" for any outline format you want to use. At least that's how I understand it. Looks like more trouble than it's worth for me, as I only use outlining in Word once in a great while. Not often enough to purchase the Writing Outliner, even at the Bits discounted price.

Thanks!

Screenshot Captor / Settings Not Saved When SSC is Updated in 2.89.01
« Last post by J-Mac on February 02, 2011, 11:41 AM »
mouser,

After the last Screenshot Captor update to 2.89.01 I noticed that my settings were not saved from the installed version that SSC updated. E.g., all my "Move To..." folder settings were wiped, the display/UI settings were all dumped, and the setting that creates folders by date and auto-moves screenshots into them was reset (I usually have this feature disabled, never liked it at all!!) SSC has a LOT of settings and so resetting them all manually is not necessarily a small task.

So how come the installer is now wiping all the settings, requiring a manual redo of them one-by-one? If this is to continue I'm going to have to save all my settings before updating from now on. Or just stop updating till I see if it's worth the trouble.

I'm using Screenshot Captor 2.89.01 on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Thanks!

Jim

Edit: OK, I located a backup of the file ScreenshotCaptor.ini and replaced the newer file with it. All settings have now gone back to what they were. Any problems with using the prior version's .INI file with 2.89.01?

......But now, it doesn't make sense with all the conveniences available with regular forums.

Unless, that is, the software you use and love is using Usenet only for their main support vehicle. Then it makes sense by necessity!

Usenet can actually be a terrific support method if it is used properly and well-covered by the developer. Of course that goes for regular software forums also. As for having to search for information on Usenet I have Agent Forte (though admittedly it is not currently installed - though I do have a current license). Agent is built specifically for Usenet groups - and nothing else. It has a built-in email program too but I never used it much. But for searching, building watches, filters, and marking posts for later reference, it is the best available. And with it Usenet can be pretty decent.   :)

Well the lawyer is probably happy to accept his fee while knowing full well it's a futile exercise.
That kinda confirms my impression of lawyers in general :(

Hey!  Not me - I already had a much, much worse opinion of lawyers.   :P

sounds like a good premise for a tv drama, too bad it has gone under the radar over for more publicity hungry series like Lost, Heroes, etc.

True, but then again it was only on HBO, which cost an added premium to watch. Sometimes that helps, sometimes not.

Thank you.

hmm.. never heard of the Wire, what is it about? :D

It is a TV series that was aired on HBO for five years. Some critics hailed it as "the best show ever on television". It's basis is generally on the same book that the TV series "Homicide: Life on the Streets" was based on. Same author involved in the screenplay. Brief write-up on TV.com:

In chronicling a multi-generational family business dealing illegal drugs and the efforts of the Baltimore police to curb their trade, this series draws parallels between these organizations and the men and women on either side of the battle.

The words of Gary W. Potter, Professor of… More Criminal Justice and Police Studies at Eastern Kentucky University, in writing about the savings and loan scandals of the 1980s, can also be used to illuminate some of the central premises of the show:

"There is precious little difference between those people who society designates as respectable and law abiding and those people society castigates as hoodlums and thugs. The world of corporate finance and corporate capital is as criminogenic and probably more criminogenic than any poverty-wracked slum neighborhood. The distinctions drawn between business, politics, and organized crime are at best artificial and in reality irrelevant. Rather than being dysfunctions, corporate crime, white-collar crime, organized crime, and political corruption are mainstays of American political-economic life."

Tim Goodman, the television critic for The San Francisco Chronicle, summed the show up perfectly when he wrote: "This show is precisely the reason you pay for HBO."

In New York's Newsday, Diane Werts says: "Most TV crime series aspire to John Grisham's level. 'The Wire' aspires to Dostoevsky's."

Season Themes

Season One centers around a family of drug dealers and the inner workings of their empire. It also follows the detectives who are trying to catch the high members of the empire. Season Two steps away from the drug trade (while still mentioning characters from the previous season) to a case of dead prostitutes which turns into a look at the corruption surrounding the Port. Season Three investigates politics and finishes the main stories that were left open in season one. Season Four focuses on four middle school students and their journeys through the public school system and continues to address the politics of an inner-city and the issues of an election. Season Five is rumored to be about the media's role in Baltimore. Season Five will be the show's final season.

The only time it's easy at my house is when my wife is out for a few hours.   :P  Then I can watch whatever I want! Otherwise, it goes something like this:

Me: "What do you want to watch tonight? Not much on but I have about 300 DVDs I'd like to see."

My Dear Wife: "Oh, I don’t know; you pick."

Me (know damn well that a trap has just been laid in front of me!):  "Uhhh... Wait a minute.... Uhhhh... How about we start watching The Wire; after all we've had the entire series DVD set for a year and a half now!"

My Darling Wife:  "Mmm... What's it about?"  (Another trap, I think...  She has asked this every time I have suggested it and I apparently still haven't found the correct answer since I STILL HAVEN'T SEEN THE DAMN WIRE YET!!  OK; I'm OK now. Really."

Me: "It's about a special team of Baltimore Police detectives who....."

Wifey:  "Oh yeah. Well, maybe I can sew buttons on something... Or..."

Me, resigned:  "Oh, wait a minute... Look! Here's another rerun of Law and Order... OK?"

My Loving Wife:  "Oh... if that's what YOU want to watch."

Me.....  "Drppp, drppp..."  (The sound of drool as my eyes glaze over to the sound of ...  "In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally....."

(I STILL haven't seen one stinking episode of The Wire..... Aarrgghhh!

Living Room / Re: ARTICLE: How not to change a licensing model
« Last post by J-Mac on January 26, 2011, 11:10 PM »
Slysoft kept all lifetime licenses in place - no changes at all, no catches. My licenses with them work as they have for almost eight years now! In late 2009 they announced that they were no longer going to SELL new lifetime licenses as of the end of that year. Still got a lot of complaints - not sure from who?!? Us existing license-holders sure weren't complaining; why would we? Plus they offered 20% discount on the lifetime licenses that were still available till the end of 2009. However before the end of the year they relented and actually put off ending the sale of lifetime licenses for a year! Then they offered the same 20% off deal for about the last quarter of 2010.

How can anyone complain about that? IMO it is the perfect lifetime license model.

Thanks!

I haven't used MLO for a while, but I still get daily updates from their Google Group, so it is definitely getting posts there. From what I have read it certainly sounds like they are still developing the programs offered there. IIRC there was a bit of spirited discussion there last year about going to an online subscription model, though I believe it was a voluntary thing, not mandated.

So you are saying that everyone here who has a problem with losing their previously purchased "free upgrades" licenses are all somehow less entitled than you to express their opinions about it because You have read in Wikipedia that we are ALL wealthy?

I guess that could be considered perfectly reasonable logic... on some planet, somewhere...

Living Room / Re: Binary Registry Keys.... Editable? Readable? How?
« Last post by J-Mac on January 24, 2011, 10:48 PM »
BTW the fact that the deleted key is recreated but keeping the bad window size and placement indicates that this data is being retained elsewhere. Otherwise the program restart would have no way to "know" about that bad size and placement info. Correct? I wonder where the hell else they store it? Evernote support isn't talking.

Thank you.

Alas, no joy yet. Shut down Evernote after setting the desired window placement and size, deleted the entire WindowPlacement key, opened Evernote and it's still tiny and off screen.

sounds like a bug in the pre-release. a bug that causes the program not to read/write from/to the registry at all.

try the following to reconfirm.
1. Shut down Evernote after setting the desired window placement and size.
2. Delete the entire WindowPlacement key
3. Open Evernote and repeat #1
4. Open regedit to see if the key is re-created.

lanax,

Those are exactly the steps I completed just before my last post above! Yes, the registry key was recreated but the window is still tiny and off the screen. I would agree that the pre-release was faulty except that I am not seeing other posts at the Evernote forum reporting the same problem. Other problems but not this one. They are using a new installer package that really does suck though. Windows Installer but it appears that someone rewrote the installation package itself. During installation - since they pre-released (now there is a contradictory phrase!) the installer now wipes out all taskbar and desktop icons and then they trickle back into view. Plus it now automatically uninstalls the previous/existing version before starting the installation. I don’t think they wrote the package well. Lots of problems reported but I haven't seen any others specifically related to window placement.

I have a feeling that something weird happened during the last installation that caused the Evernote window to be tossed off screen and so that is where the registry key was created to reflect. Sucks that it cannot be changed though.

Anyway I downloaded the latest version of WinSize2 and saved the Evernote window where I want it and it seems to be working!

Thanks!

Alas, no joy yet. Shut down Evernote after setting the desired window placement and size, deleted the entire WindowPlacement key, opened Evernote and it's still tiny and off screen. Screencap of Win+Tab view below; see that little tiny window toward the bottom, all by its lonesome? That is my Evernote window upon starting it, though off the screen at the very top left. Second screencap is the Evernote window after using Alt+Space+M and using the right arrow to move the window into view. Cute, huh?

Thanks

just an idea, instead of editing the registry key, why not delete it (after backing up) and start Evernote to see if the window placement functions normally?

See, I just knew someone would have an idea! Might work - I'll give it a try and post back afterward.

Thank you. I'll give WinSize2 a try, though reinstalling Evernote will possibly restore the correct window placement. Still it bothers me that I cannot find where/how to even view that setting, let alone edit it. On many, many apps I have had to go into either INI, DAT, or config files to change settings and even editing registry keys. This is the first time in a long time that I could not find the basic settings for a program. Well, actually I did find them; just can't read 'em!

Thanks again!

Jim

Ha! I thought that sounded way too familiar! I used that on my notebook two years ago for a program that would only open in a relatively small window and I wanted a larger window. Worked a treat then! I used it on my desktop last March for another program - a specialized database program - where the idiot who designed it had so many limitations in it that I never did end up doing a darn thing with it - other than paying for the POS! The developer told me to change my resolution to 800 x 600 manually whenever I used it. Creep! Winsize2 did allow me to increase the window size for that but the actual program's UI stayed the same size within the larger window.

Living Room / Binary Registry Keys.... Editable? Readable? How?
« Last post by J-Mac on January 24, 2011, 02:37 PM »
Title says it all, if you are presently frothing at the mouth, staring at RegEdit!

I have a little problem with the latest Pre-Release version of Evernote: After it installed over the previous pre-release the Evernote main window opens off-screen. Right after I updated Evernote it opened and I could not find the doggone thing! Taskbar button was there but it didn't bring anything up when clicked. Plus the thumbnail image that Win 7 shows when hovering your mouse over a taskbar button only showed about a 50 px x 200 px section of the Evernote main toolbar instead of the main window itself. I could right-click the taskbar button and then click "Maximize" and the maximized window would appear but there was no way to restore the "normal" window; instead it would just jump back off-screen again. Frustrating, to say the least.

So every time Evernote starts up I have been pressing Alt+Space+M to get into the Move function, and then I use the arrow keys to move this tiny Evernote onto the monitor. Of course I also have to resize the window. However there doesn’t seem to be anyway to make the window placement stick. Using File>Exit while the correct window is showing doesn’t stay that way; the next time Evernote starts it is back off-screen in a tiny window!!

Evernote Support said to uninstall/reinstall the app. (Have you ever heard that before?! Hate it?). Though actually it probably will fix the problem, as I am guessing that something went weird during the last update installation and hopefully reinstalling it fresh has a damn good chance of getting it right this time. Maybe. Fingers crossed. But I got a bug under my bonnet now. I want to know where the hell the Window Placement setting is stored for Evernote now. And no one will tell me. (Or can tell me...) No INI file, no DAT file, no config file. All that is left is the registry. So I looked and there it is: a whole key under HK Current User with a subkey named WindowPlacement! But... all the keys in it are Binary keys. I cannot read this key with anything. Hex Editor just shows me the Hex and makes it editable, but still doesn’t translate it into human-readable material.

Does anyone know how I can see what is listed there for WindowPlacement? I haven't reinstalled the update yet just because this is bugging me and I would like to understand where the setting is for Evernote and how to change it without uninstalling and reinstalling - because I still hate that damn answer!!

Thanks!

Jim
