Site/Forum Features / Re: What's the interval between posting and editing being noted?
« Last post by nosh on February 18, 2009, 02:05 AM »
maybe it was extended until the next post is 'posted'

That would be smart, and useful.  One's proof reading never seems to work properly until 1 second after committing.  :-[
-cranioscopical (February 17, 2009, 09:03 PM)

That would serve a chronic 'edit'er like me well, too. But I can imagine someone posting an elaborate reply only to find out that the OP was edited enough in the meantime to make the reply redundant. A versioning system would be the best (though somewhat complex to implement?) solution.

I don't mind swearing, but when it's overdone and for no apparent reason (like in this video), it bores me. Enough that I actually found the whole video relatively boring.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini-Review of GTAIV for PC [Ranting]
« Last post by nosh on February 13, 2009, 05:39 AM »
I played a friend's copy on my machine for a few hours and I was getting decent FPS, even clocking 30+ when there wasn't too much going on... averaging around 25, I think. GTA is always fun but I really don't see that much of a difference between IV and GTA SA... maybe a few more in-game gimmicks, but that's it.

I think the cop AI _SUCKS_! Stand down a ladder with a shotgun and they just keep appearing like bunnies and getting their asses shot - Bang! Argh! Bang! Argh! Bang! Argh! WTF!
Also sometimes when rushing to arrest you their cars just flip and tumble around bends like speedboats. Which brings me to point #2, all cars I drove (still) felt like they weighed less than 100 lb.

I'm far from a hardcore gamer but I can't help comparing any FPS I play with HL2 - and they all fall short when it comes to AI or performance, and to think I played it on a P4!
Crysis has awesome graphics but it makes me giddy and nauseous for some reason... maybe I'm just too old for gaming. :)

BTW, Rockstar's done the smart thing and priced the game down here at INR 500 (around $10 :P ), I assume they've done this in other markets too.

Everything itself has priority settings for its 'Icon Load' and 'Read File Info' threads, both are set to idle by default. 25-30% consumption does seem on the high side, though so I guess the 'Read File Info' is about updating the results list and nothing to do with indexing.

I wish there was a slightly more open way to interact with the author than 1 on 1 emailing.

Hehe! Yeah, I wasn't too kicked about that "leap" in speed. I'm hoping for features like results by category & thumbnail view for images.

Good to know, I thought it was the fans on that monster sucking you in!

Do take a look at Winsplit Revolution if you haven't already, for tossing around/ sizing windows on that multi-mon setup.

It turned out that she used Microsoft Outlook to send her email but Wegman’s email system failed to recognize the proprietary HTML tags of Outlook and hence this goof-up.

Goomba.jpg

I made Goomba a few months back for a friend who insisted that I give her something hand-made. I dreaded it but it was actually fun making and quite relaxing too. Nice change of pace from being constantly on the PC. My friend was pleased, which resulted in a more tranquil environment for a day or two. Are you someone who spends a lot of time on the PC? Have back aches? Neck strains? Then Cubeecraft's paperdolls are for you.

[Post edited, my bad]

Take something like a file manager, how many Total Commander, DOpus or Xplorer² users are going to dump their utility of choice coz Windows Explorer got OMG so damn good with Windows 7!!  Xplorer² or XYPlorer for instance are both the product of individual developers. I cannot fathom why MS with all the talent and resources at its disposal hasn't come with anything really close to these apps after so many years in the business. File managers aren't exactly specialized applications for an OS either.

And sorry about being a wet blanket but jump lists seems like a cute little system utility that one hears about in a Lifehacker post and forgets a week later. *Nosh refuses to sing the Windows 7 anthem*

General Software Discussion / Re: Tagging Files (Tag Everything)
« Last post by nosh on January 23, 2009, 04:01 AM »
I've given up on ADS and started appending tags to file names. It's not very pretty but I feel more secure with the system than I would with an app that has a centralized database. You miss out on fancy stuff like tag clouds but being able to search with Everything or Locate32 is quite an advantage. Mass tag management is also a breeze using something like ReNamer. Anyone know of an app that lets you manage tags within file names? Something simple that lets you invoke tagging via a file's shell context menu and lets you add predefined tags via checkboxes and manages (create/delete/rename) tags.

Just flashed both drives successfully. I feel like one of those ridiculously lucky guys in a WWII movie who made it past the enemy despite overwhelming odds. Thank you for this FREE! game of Russian Roulette, Seagate!

IIRC, the 500 GBs aren't getting totally bricked by the latest fix. They're still being recognized by the BIOS so they should come to life again if Seagate actually gets it right with the upcoming, and hopefully final, fix.

They've been monitoring the forums and silently updating the KB text to cover up inaccuracies but nobody has had the decency or good business sense to actually talk to & reassure the customers.

But this fix of the fix that you're referring to worked fine on 1TBs - and I missed it coz it was night time here. Now it's been pulled and I'll have to take my chances with the fix³ when it's released, not a very comforting thought considering their track record.

There's no way to access the flash utility files directly in Windows, they don't show up on the CD. They get copied to a RAM drive after booting but there's no way to access them there either.

I don't have a floppy drive and I doubt if it would help even if I could get my hands on the batch file + flash stuff and run it manually. It's a little irresponsible on their part to have outdated instructions for something as critical as a flash utility.

Thanks.

Did you apply it successfully? I had a "specific model not found" error - the firmware recognizes the drive model if I ask it to scan devices but crashes with this error while applying. Apparently, I'm not alone.

Also, their instructions are outdated, they ask you to run flash.bat manually from the DOS prompt - there's no way to get to the DOS prompt or access any specific file.

What a PITA this is turning out to be! I suppose I should be grateful the bad flash didn't brick my drive.

Slightly OT but this is something that's been perplexing me for a while.

I have a friend who had a bad HDD crash a couple of years back and handed it to some professional data recovery guys. He swears that the amount of data recovered was much more than the actual capacity of the hard disk.
