I'll stick with cacert.org

Of all those extensions I only use Fast Dial. I saw this first in opera and very quickly got used to it.

There is a similar extension named Speed Dial. One will have to try both and see which works better for oneself.

Living Room / Re: Opensource end-user focused applications wanted to translate
« Last post by housetier on February 13, 2008, 09:05 AM »
It reminds me of rosetta, at least that's what I believe another "one to translate them all" was called. I think these projects are very important for FOSS and software development in general. The more languages a software speaks the more users it can have; or from a different angle: the more languages it speaks, the more people get a chance to use this software when they need to.

Although I won't have the time to participate I wish you success :) For a better world!

in my club we follow the principle of T.E.A.M.: Toll Ein Anderer Macht's. This roughly translates to "Great, someone else is doing it". Well, we refer to it in a more ironic or cynic way...

Anyway, I doubt we will have to wait for the DC Toolbar for very much longer. And if we are lucky it can be rebranded for other forums using SMF...

Go TEAM go!  ;)

One style to guide them
One glyph to accent them
One face to see them
and, with their hinting, print them.

I wonder if Google's Social Graph API can be used for this?

I haven't played with it yet, just saw it somewhere among my feeds a few days ago.

Thanks for writing the newsletter!

Again, I found threads that had escaped me even though I subscribed to the feed...

wow HUGE images!

took my browser a while to cope with them. fascinating nonetheless! Now add a hyperlinked imagemap to the users' profiles :)

I would also suggest logging in via SSH and doing your work there. At least use an ftp connection that has been secured by SSL. One mustn't send cleartext password over the internets.

General Software Discussion / Re: What Are Your Views On BUGS?
« Last post by housetier on February 02, 2008, 10:07 PM »
I can tolerate bugs for so long until I have gotten used to them; however, if a bug interrupts my flow I am very intolerant, even more so when the developer does not respond to bug reports or off-handedly declares them "features, you have to get a long with".

Mind you, I also view lack of "tweakyness" a bug, I want to make the program work the way I think and do.

Living Room / Re: Best forums for....
« Last post by housetier on February 02, 2008, 09:43 PM »
I don't post on any other forum than here on DC. I just wanted to say that IMHO donationcoder.com is the best forum!

The attractivity of a forum is defined by its treatment of new members. That's what I really care about: how they deal with "noobs". I have extremely high standards WRT foums, and the donationcoders are the only ones that can live up to these standards.

General Software Discussion / Re: Online Content Editor
« Last post by housetier on January 31, 2008, 04:20 PM »
Sounds like a Content Management System ("CMS") to me. There are specialized systems like wordpress which is primarily used for weblogs or phpbb which is primarily used as a forum. Then there are more general and much more complex ones, like plone or drupal.

Or you sign up to one of the many online free blog services. This might be the easiest way to get started, because you won't have to install anything, just give away your email address :)

Some can be filled with content by web form or desktop software; others require only a set of GNU tools, or even less: only the bash shell! (Check their project goals too)

Note: the links I provided are only examples of software; there is much much more, so much more, you might be overwhelmed by choices. Which leads me nicely to my question:

Can you tell us what you want to accomplish besides editing your own pages?

I don't recall any of the names, there are a bunch of scripts at userscripts.org tagged with "https".

IIRC there is a greasemonkey script that will switch to https for all sorts of sites from google. Maybe that can be extended to include your forums.

I was with fusemail quite some ago, when they had just started off and were offering there services for free. From the beginning they made it clear they would eventually charge for their services; I left when they finally did.

However, back then I was amazed at their professionalism and their quick and accurate responses to questions (tickets). They seemed sincere about their customers' happiness.

If I could afford it, I think it would still be with them.

Codetrucker, first of all: yay for your idea of tagging files! I like tags; it all started with mp3s and their genre tag

Anyway, I use linux and I don't think we have an implementation of AHK for linux yet.

I could invest 40 EUR and give my old laptop 50% more ram, maybe that'll allow me to use firefox more smoothly...

Of course bookmarks show up, storing them is not the issue.

Let me elaborate a little on this. When I bookmark something I want to assign certain tags or keywords to it. Then, when I am looking for a website again, I usually remember "it had something to do with foo or bar" and can browse the bookmarks under this tag.

I can put the bookmark in folder, but that's only allowing for one tag per bookmark, unless I bookmark the same page several times in different folders.

I can also use the description field when bookmarking a page, and search for the keywords when wanting to retrieve it. This might work, but require some getting used to because I don't see the tags I have used before, I cannot browse them. Also I don't get suggestions for already present tags when I start typing them: "f" will suggest "foo" for example.

Third: do you know of a way to always show "Details" when bookmarking a page?

I haven't been using opera for a long time, and during this time I got used to applying tags and being shown suggestions. This is probably the most difficult part: overcoming routine. ...but at the same time I really like my way of handling bookmarks: they are stored and retrieved easily and quickly.

It's not like I am waiting for a chance to say "opera sucks", I am looking for a way to use the internets my way with a browser I don't know very well yet.
