Living Room / Re: Laptop or Desktop — which are you?
« Last post by CodeTRUCKER on December 14, 2007, 09:03 PM »
I have a desktop available, but I use an external keyboard, mouse and La-Z-Boy.

The video looks like a whole lot of overlapping columns of mini-desktops.
778
I have the audio working but the video is not working properly.  Could this have anything to do with "hardware authentication?"
779
Since there are lots of threads on the net from frustrated Tosh owners trying to get to XP, including for your model, I suspect that they never made XP drivers.

Please tell me it is not true.  :(
780
Success (sort of)!  I have the audio working.
781
No question about that.  The trick is to get the Vista machine to "run" XP.  ;)
782
Oops!  I already blew it on the first bullet.  :-[  Lesson learned for next time.
783
I have been trying to upgrade my Toshiba laptop from Vista to XP without a lot of success, so I am needing some help.

Evernote on sale!  How fortunate for any that need it!

...
I'll take one for the team though (Gulp!) and try hitting the juice button in the middle of typing in both  :o

That is the ticket, one of intrepid spirit!

Do you really see that many BSOD that it is a concern? I haven't had but maybe two in the past three or four years. BSODs on WinXP should be a /very/ rare occurrence these days and should only result when you update or install a device driver.

Unfortunately, I am having a rash of them.  I have had two in the last week and the fact that twice I had lost a salient point in my writing was enough to send me hunting.  That is how I discovered Evernote.  I tested each of what I could find out there, but only Evernote could show me it saved everything.  Even the two that recently occurred only proved to be an inconvenience.  Once back up and running I just kept on where I left off.

General Software Discussion / The MAIN reason EVERYONE should use EverNote!*
« Last post by CodeTRUCKER on December 13, 2007, 05:32 AM »
I am at roughly the half-century mark and I will remember the most important things (I write a lot) for just long enough to get them down in a most spartan-like condition.  Twice I have had BSODs during some very critical apologetic writing and not even the autosave was able to rebuild Humpty-Dumpty again.  I was able to jot down the subject and where I wanted to go, but electrons are now the keeper of "how" I wanted to express and I have never been able to recall those sentences.

Enter "Evernote"

For me the most important feature (documented or not) is the ability to somehow save every keystroke.  When the keyup event is triggered, it is on my doc!  I have tested this in numerous ways and in every test Evernote still had it on the screen when Windows and came back up and I executed Evernote.

If you write and NEVER want to risk losing any pearls of wisdom, then Evernote is here to help.

FYI - The above is my own experience.  I am not spamming nor am I receiving any compensation.  I am offering a friendly tip.

Come on, do not be shy. "Trucker" is as respectable as "Doctor."

I am interested in seeing how many other DCer's are full-time truck drivers.  Also, for the rest of you that have not driven a BIG TRUCK, you might wish to take this opportunity to have any questions you may have addressed.

I am trying to decide if it would be better to do one major attempt or a couple of small utilities I have been thinking about?

I just received some info on a Brixoft product called "Source Edit."  Looks pretty comprehensive from here.  What do you think?

<Edit - May 2009 - Seems that something has gone south over there.  A lot of server errors when clicking the links>

SMF Forum Mods / Re: Is there a better way to handle Gri's posts?
« Last post by CodeTRUCKER on December 07, 2007, 06:46 PM »
Somehow Mouser has been able to police this forum by inculcating in us the motivation to police ourselves.  A rare quality in leadership; indeed, and we are the better for it.

Regardless of what anyone may think on their first impression, I would suggest that person(s) would do a great disservice to their self and others if one does not take another look.  DC is quite remarkable, besides gaining a better mastery on coding.

The jury is still out on the issues concerning Gri and ourselves.  It would be interesting to return here and see what verdict was rendered, provided we did not err and vindicated ourselves demonstrating we did have the wisdom to judge rightly.

<Edit - Hmmm.... nothing new?>

I am a very strong proponent of wood glue, but not just any kind.  As time goes on technology will probably replace the old favs, but when I have something that works I do not change it.

In regard to the weight-vs-span conundrum, have you considered using dummy books aligned as supports?  These would be would supports painted as fake volumes of some classics that you might never put on your shelf.  Done right, the "book" supports would fit right in with the rest of your tomes.
799
I think you already know I am a natural wood proponent. :P

All kidding aside, the key to making the two-tone look work is make sure you get an exact match with the parquet or an equally exact contrast from the flooring.  This "contrast" would work very if the trim match, say the wood trim on your sofa (assuming you have that).

The main point is that the key to contrast is exact matching or exact strongly defined differences.  Just being a shade or two off can be very disappointing.  Fortunately, natural wood is very forgiving. (shameless plug  :P)

General Software Discussion / Re: "Files NOT Used" utility

I must confess that I am quite surprised that this utility is not more available.  Maybe that is saying something or I am ignorant of existing utility.
