Living Room / Re: What are your favorite RSS Feeds?
« Last post by KenR on July 23, 2006, 12:50 PM »
Want your news and information delivered to you so you don't need to get it yourself?

That's what RSS is great for - all you have to do is get a RSS reader (most are free), subscribe to the RSS feeds (the information) that you want (typically done by clicking a link on a website), and the RSS reader will get the information for you. Then all the information is collected for you and is typically stored on your computer so you can read it offline. If you're not familiar with RSS, now is the time to learn!

There are many RSS readers and almost all of them are free. Although they vary in features and how they present the information, they all serve the same basic function of obtaining and showing you the information that you want. Various RSS readers have been discussed in the DonationCoder forum and this would be a great place to find out which ones people like and use.

A file containing hundreds of RSS feeds on many topics is attached. You should be able to import the feeds contained in this file into most RSS readers. This file was created by putting together RSS feeds contributed by DonationCoder members, particularly app103, Carol Haynes, Housetier, Josh, and KenR. It will be helpful to anyone who is just getting started or is already using an RSS reader, but would like to obtain some additional feeds. (WARNING: Some of these feeds might contain offensive information!).

Remember, the best feeds are going to be from the sites you already visit and enjoy. Look around on sites you browse for a small orange square with a dot and two lines Screenshot - 7_23_2006 , 12_37_20 PM.png. Depending on your web browser, it may be in the address bar for the site as well as the page itself. Click this square and it will give you information about setting of a feed for that site.

Have fun!
KenR

This is a pretty cool quiz which demonstrates in a nice way a variety of different optical illusions and shows you how your brain gets fooled by them. These illusions give us insight into the nature of our senses.

Here are some of my favorite feeds. Like everyone else, I have a very large number of feeds that I am not able to follow closely. Those on this list, however, tend to be pretty manageable.

We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework, to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles - anything that gives a glimpse into someone else's life. Anything goes... (from Web site)

Living Room / E-mail process as well as content

Fuzzmail records the act of writing and lets you send it as an email. Dynamic changes, typoes, pauses and writeovers are captured and communicated. We created fuzzmail because we wanted a more emotionally expressive alternative to email, so that an emailed love letter does not have to look the same as a business letter.

Here's a site that will have a computer make a phonecall and read the text you specify with a computerized voice. You could use it as alarm clock, have it wish you happy birthday when no one else will, or ..... well, you figure it out. Check it out!

I share the concerns expressed by others and see this as a tremendous loss. I seriously doubt further development will occur on existing utilities and expect additional ones will not be developed.

Anyone know if Zoom Player and Light Alloy has screencapture ability,it's the only reason i have VLC on my computer at the moment.
-tinyvillager (July 17, 2006, 06:10 PM)

Yes for Light Alloy as well. On the bottom of the UI for the default skin roughly in the middle, there is a small camera item that you click to do this.

If you need alarms, however, you'll need to look elsewhere.
doesnt ClocX support alarm? when i right click on it i see "alarm". :)

kimmchii is absolutely right. ClocX does have alarms. Thank you SO MUCH for pointing out my mistake. I went back to my original post and struckthough that portion of the message. My apologies to the author and DC community for my oversight.

I've been "informed" that our very own App has written a number of timing applications (http://www.appsapps.info/index.php) including a very nice clock.  Though different in appearance, her clock software is also highly configurable and performs numerous functions. If you're in the market for clock software (or other timer applications), check out her page as well.

I recently discovered a very nice clock program. The program is called ClocX and can be obtained at http://clocx.php5.cz/. It is highly configurable in terms of settings, shape, size, and background images. It has several nice options, including my personal favorite "click through", which allows it to be set to stay on top of other windows but lets you interact with the window beneath it as if the clock was not there. This is the nicest donationware clock program I have ever found and is better than many shareware clock programs.  If you need alarms, however, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Hey App,
I planned to keep in a different folder as well, but was not aware you could use fonts just by opening and minimizing them them to the taskbar.  :o You're so smart!  :-[ :-*

Not as much time as I wish, but as much as everyone else.

I know that too doing things in the windows fonts directory can have some odd effects, but it's a good reminder. Thanks.

Hi all.

I am wondering what sites people are aware of where I could get nice free fonts. Any/all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ken

Ok Mouser, I didn't see any particular need for it when you first mentioned it, but you've convinced me. It sounds like it could a positive addition to the site.

Great discussion question! I use:

Web Search Pro - incredibly powerful, simple to use search tool
CookieSafe - much easier to manage cookies
Download Manaer Tweak - I think it's an improvement, but i can't find any to make it download like Opera, which is what I'd like
AI Roboform Toolbar (to make RoboForm with with Firefox)
InfoEnter - enters text into fields
Tab Mix Pro - improves tabbed browsing

App,
Let me second what mouser said. I have been looking at the MS reader and books. I have never tried it and think it's a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion and information.
