I installed it... took me way longer than I expected, and after I finally figured out how to load a MP3 file, the app crashed. It always crashes. :-/

Thanks for the warning.  I don't have any Android Apps but if I ever get an Android Notebook I won't install this on my Windows Lappy.

I don't use players often enough to know the features.  But if the Android one does all you desire I would suggest trying to run it in Windows using Blue Stacks Android Emulator

Found Deals and Discounts / [free] GOTD HippoEdit 1.60
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 10, 2016, 07:48 AM »
GOTD HippoEdit 1.60 As of post time 19 hours and change left to download and install.  There is also a separate activate.exe file to be run after installation to register the program.

Edit:  Hmm, on first run after activation it launches this web page:
http://www.hippoedit...amp;utm_nooverride=1

basically saying the GOTD version is crippleware and pay $14.95 if you want the real deal.  Guess I'll uninstall soon.  :(

That's a good one MilesAhead, thanks!

Still have to click a few more things to save it to Google Keep though.

As far as clicking in the browser goes, the one that gets me is trying to go back 2 pages with one click.  You cannot use the back arrow context menu since that would be 2 clicks.  I made a JavaScript bookmarklet and put it on the Bookmarks Toolbar.  If there were 2 or more pages in the history it moved -2 pages.  Otherwise it just moved -1.  Worked fairly well.  So what did they do?  They disabled the cache on the back button.  So no matter what it fetches it from the server even if you just loaded it 10 seconds ago.  Go figure!  :)

Maybe the price is right but the most recent post on their forum is 1 year ago.
Sounds like a dead piece of software to me.
Besides, Keep extensions working with Slimjet and Chrome are free.

Think Slimjet is the only way at the present time, to get Google Keep extensions the way they can perform on Google Chrome.
Have tried Vivaldi and Opera but these can't handle it (for the time being).

I'm surprised no one who develops extensions for Firefox has yet to make like the aforementioned one.

AutoCopy2 may be able to do some of the same things.  It may be worth a look.

Hmm, I used the web archive to go back to 2011. In the FAQ it says the program is free and will always remain so.  Heh heh.  It must call home or something because I installed the 2011 version and running it says the beta is over and asks if you want to go to the web site and download the newest.  This is supposed to be a 14 day trial. I just installed it.  But most of the social sites I do not use.  Likewise I do not use Word or Paint etc..  My browsers already have search in google.

Oh well, it is on here so I will try it for a bit.  :)

But I don't think you can circumvent the trial version.

Edit:  First impression is that it does seem to work.  One thing I don't like though.  If you are already in a browser, highlight some text, then hit control c, click on Wiki icon.  Then you click go to web site.  It will launch the default browser to go there.  So let us say you are in some chrome derivative but have FF as default browser.  When you click to go to the Wiki page for the copied text, you have to wait for FF to load up.  Supposedly it can be extended but I think you have to use their API to roll your own programs unless someone has already made a plugin.

It may be cool for someone who does copy/paste constantly to do work though.

Living Room / Re: Limitless is limited after all
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 08, 2016, 08:00 AM »
Together with Miles I enjoyed Limitless a lot, but I don't feel too sad about it ending as I got my clear start and ending. Maybe that is an European thing, I don't know.

I liked X-Files once it was in syndication.  But it went on too long.  They delayed dealing with the original premise as long as they could(Mulder's sister missing, aliens are here running things or doing secret stuff) then arced to some lame stuff.

However I thought Limitless was just getting interesting.  Now and then they went for laughs in an episode and that didn't always work.  Also I never understood why the protagonist had to connect stuff with string to get the idea across.  I guess they thought it made a good visual.  But if you think of it, the plot should have branched out more like the movie.  People making a big splash on the stock market and/or politics seemingly coming from nowhere, they got access to the drug etc..  Instead they made it into more of a Sherlock Holmes solves the crime deal.  One thing about TV.. give them a good idea and they will butcher it for sure.  Just look at the last few years of All In The Family.

General Software Discussion / Re: Toolwiz Time Freeze goes shareware

@Miles, could it be that you were thinking about ToolWiz Time Machine, not Time Freeze?

http://www.toolwiz.c...oolwiz-time-machine/

Nope.  Time Machine has been payware all along.  Time Freeze has always been freeware.  I just visited the site again and stuff is weird.  It may be partly due to the WiFi here.  They block strange sites or deny DNS lookup for reasons only they know.  I notice they made changes to the ToolWiz web site since yesterday.  But it looks like CSS stuff like different color backgrounds.  There is still no explanation if the thing is payware or not.  I haven't checked Softpedia yet.  ToolWiz Time Freeze installer does download.  But I don't want to go half way through an install just to get a version number.

http://www.clicktoapp.com/ used to be a nice free app - looking for old free version or someway to do same tasks.

If you have an idea when the last free version was available on their web page try here:
https://archive.org/web/

There is a chrome extension that is somewhat similar.  Highlight something in the browser and a floating menu of icon buttons pops up next to the mouse.  I can't remember the name of it though.  I removed it from SlimJet in favor of SelectionSearch extension.

I looked at Click. To web site.  I am still not sure exactly what it does.  But I take it that it is a stand-alone program and works independently of browsers.  For some reason these fast paste utilities seem to go from freeware to payware as soon as the bugs are removed.  :)

Try this link:  https://web.archive..../www.clicktoapp.com/

It looks like the last beta release.  Edit:  Oops!  It just says the beta is over.  Oh well, some time before that may work.  :)

Alastor.png

More Jack Vance.  I finished Emphyrio.  A fun read.

The Alastor trilogy is about a cluster of 30,000 planets inhabited by humans.  One man is the supreme ruler(starts to sound like I Worship His Shadow here.)  :)  Two things I do like about Vance's adventures in the "Gaean Reach" are 1) the people speak the same language and 2) Vance does not try to get into the nitty gritty details of space ship drive systems and time dilation and all the rest of it.  Man has colonized many planets for thousands of years.  If you want to go from one planet to another you get in a space craft, plot a course and let the computer worry about it.

I am only a few pages in but so far it looks like fun.  :)

Living Room / Limitless is limited after all
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 07, 2016, 01:26 PM »
Limitless was the only TV series I made a point to watch every week.  Suppose you had a creative inventive show that actually got good ratings.  What would you do?  Well if you are CBS you dump it of course.  Can't open up a can of worms by having a successful TV series that doesn't suck.

This reminds me of Nowhere Man with Bruce Greenwood.  Half way through the first season they decide to twist the plot so that everything can be wrapped up in 13 episodes.  Can't have thought provoking episodes continuing on willy-nilly or people might grow to expect TV series to make sense.

The "kill it before it spreads" syndrome strikes again.
Oh well.  No need to consider subscribing to CBS live on air broadcasts especially since any good shows are killed and the live NFL games they carry are exempt from the streaming deal.  Guess I have to buy a tuner for my Laptop.

I hear there is a sequel to the movie Chronicle, which is of course titled Chronicle 2

Maybe I'll score one out of three.  :)
Edit: although after reading more stuff about the movies "development" it seems to be foundering.  IMDB says it is "in development" so maybe it isn't totally dead yet.  Here's hoping some good SciFi is made someplace.  :)

Any way to add a right-click menu on selected text to add to Google Keep?

Recent Google Keep extension for Chrome is just a wonderful addition:
https://chrome.googl...cbbapmcbpinfpgnhiddi

Can probably do something like that by adding it to Evernote (now that they work hand in hand with Google Drive) ?

Would be good thing when working in Linux.

That is the first I heard of Keep.  It looks like it could be cool.  I am reluctant to do any syncing because I have had so much hassle with duped bookmarks etc..  For some reason when they set up these syncing mechanisms they don't want to make it easy for you to upload/download with overwrite like XMarks.  I don't want to experiment with Keep and hose my bookmarks yet again.  (Although I do have RollbackRX and could probably roll back to sane bookmarks but it is the principle of the thing.)  :)

Have you tried AlternativeTo site?

Found Deals and Discounts / WiseCare 365 Pro and Free 4.19

Version 4.19 both Free and Pro have been released.  Of interest may be the Free Portable edition.  All downloads are available from this link

As has been happening with previous updates, my Pro giveaway edition has updated to the new version through the updater in the Settings page.  I assume it will just cut off doing so when the year license has expired.  Then it may revert to the Free version.  Even so, the free version has quite a few utilities.

I did notice a giveaway for the Pro edition but I could not ascertain the version number of the giveaway.  Clicking the download button got no reaction.  That may indicate the giveaway is over or the page has a fault.  I am not sure which.  In any case, the Wise Care 365 Pro appears on the giveaway sites frequently so keep a look out for it.

USonic Evolution

Sorry, I could not find a live link to the album.  I just encountered them recently.  They strike me as heavily Weather Report inspired.  The first tune on the Evolution album, Kinsey Report, is quite uplifting(no pun intended.)  It may be worth hunting around for the mp3/video.

You may be able to find the individual tracks on Youtube.

I dunno' if I'm so impressed with them Zen guys.  I suspect the archers use such long bows to make sure they don't hold them backwards.  That could hurt.

http://www.toolwiz.c...toolwiz-time-freeze/

The site is kind of funky now.  Just bullets with blurbs.  No detail on the difference between the old freeware and the new shareware.  Changelog says updated engine.  But I cannot find any detail about what is gained by paying for it.  So I assume it is a trial version now and you pay to keep it working.  Unless someone knows something specific.

If the free one worked on your machine you may want to save a copy of the installer.  :)

Emphyrio by Jack Vance.

I read a few of his SciFi novels in the past.  I recently read Ports of Call and that encouraged me to get back into Vance.  What I found charming in Ports of Call, which is about a space freighter with a 4 man crew, was the characters.  Each of the crew members, and just about every citizen of every city on every planet they visit, is a home spun philosopher.  There is some action.  Not on the intergalactic war scale.  But enough to keep the reader from getting anxious to reach the end of the novel.  But what I found appealing was the dialog between the characters.  A lot of fun.

I have just started Emphyrio and have no feel for it yet.  I still do not know what to expect.

I have Tamper Monkey extension in SlimJet.  But I have no idea what to do with it.  The scripts I find on the download boards are for sites I haven't heard of.  Does anyone have some favorite general purpose Tamper Monkey or Grease Monkey scripts they wish to tout?

tape drives that always seemed to backup your data just fine but often stumbled severely whenever you tried to restore something.

Yeah.  I should have passed on the tape backup and had a CDROM put in when I had my 486 built.  I can never forget reading the restore instructions that came with the tape drive.  "You will probably never have to run the restore.. but..."  That really inspired confidence!  Turns out it was a waste anyway since there was no means to boot a restore program to avoid the "system files are in use" gotcha' that prevents restoring the OS.  What a waste of money!  And the thing made such a racket!  Man did I hate that whirring sound!

I've heard leaf blowers that sounded better!
