I need to get rid of the D:\ drive altogether.

I can grab a Vista DVD (I have several) and delete the D:\ parition, but my question is... how do I make C:\ use the new "unallocated" space?
777
Alright, now I am confused...

Would it be better to just "combine" the two, or wipe and delete the 2nd and extend the first to take the space? Everything is backed up, and I wouldn't *MIND* a reformat, but I would prefer to keep everything intact.
778
13.7GB, but still not enough - thats 2 games, tops.

Any software (in-Windows, if at all possible?) that lets me combine 2 NTFS partitions?
779
After about 2 minutes, it stopped scanning my game directory and got to the program files...

AH HA! Found some stuff! I can delete!
780
*Googles now* I just booted up the old server, hope this works! :)
781
Looks like I am stuck moving my *entire* Backup parition to the old computer, as CCleaner has deleted almost every one of my Hotfix uninstall folders already. Cleaning out old system restore data helped get me another 2Gb, but I still don't feel happy about it. Oh well.

Maybe someone (probably right after I am done moving all the data, too! :P) will find something, but as far as my situation goes, I literally have nothing else that can go.

Here is to keeping old hardware! :beerchug:
782
Cool video, simple but cool. *goes off to break something else in Xubuntu*
783
Hey Kids! Now you too can set up your very own Xen virtual server in the privy of your home - and break it! I'm tellin' ya, it doesn't get any better than that folks!
Don't us "kid" and "teen" Linux users get to break things, too! You grown ups get ALL the fun! ;D

I agree, version 1 was good, and I kinda dropped off the bandwagon after the v2 beta came out. IMO too many options and too confusing (I have a brain that simply demands... simple ;D). Maybe put it in an archived section?
785
Yes, I found that one on Google, but it says its XP only - I am on Vista SP1, so not sure if that would work (I doubt it). :( Anything else? :tellme:
786
All my updates are working fine so I am not concerned with that, I have been googling a lot and have resorted to scanning (manually) the Windows folder for old stuff from installers/uninstallers (5 things so far, so 5MB! ;D).

Didn't know CCleaner could do that! I'll poke around with it and see how it goes.

EDIT: I can't find it in CCleaner, latest version - where exactly is it at? Is it in an older version? Found it - it's been checked, too! Drat!
787
Right, but isn't there SOMEthing out there that can remove old stuff from Windows updates and whatnot? Or can it be done manually?
788
Alright, here is a question that may stomp even the most "clean" computer users...

How can I get more free space back, WITHOUT uninstalling programs, WITHOUT deleting things I need (VB projects, family photos, archived document stuff...), and WITHOUT removing my games (that's the point of freeing space, to be able to put another game (namely, Crysis) onto the computer).

I use my own SystemCare program, and that runs a small AHK script to clean my computer, followed by Disk Cleanup, CCleaner, and Steven Gould's CleanUp! - so junk files are not an issue. I run backups on my 2nd partition, so they are already out of the way. I uninstall every app that I don't need and keep only stuff I need, archiving stuff that I may need later onto the backup partition.

I can't get a second hard drive because cash is tight for the family, but I only have 9.16GB left, and it is draining fast.

My only idea is that I could move all my backups onto my old server (used for Sauerbraten by the DC Gamers Club), however then I don't know how to combine two NTFS partitions (my main Windows partition and the then-empty Backup partition). Either that, or there might be some software out there that searches for and deletes no-longer-needed things that Windows leaves (service pack uninstall files, etc). :-\

Ideas? :tellme:

(My backup partition is also running low on space, at just 3.47GB left - see the image below)

Living Room / Re: Why do children love CAPS LOCK?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on June 15, 2008, 04:08 AM »
I think it's because they're too young to drive. Once they get a car, they stop doing the all caps thing and just leave their left turn signal permanently on.

 ;D So true!!!

I definately go for the "DC swag" option, but something like a mousepad or stickers - not anything fancy enough that it would normally be thought of as a "reward", but not too dull either. I wouldn't mind paying for a Cody shirt, or even like a little model to sit on the desk (or for kids, a little doll thing with a coin that you could stick into his mouth...). Just ideas. :two:

we should have a big DC gathering in a year or two and there will have to be a mug for everyone who attends :).

I might be able to join if it happens in a year or so... :)

I can add a right click menu back in if you want, it isn't any difficult task, but I simply figured that most of the options you would use are in the menu bar.

It is much faster, but I noticed that on some websites (I am not sure why, but it is only a select few) SB refuses to follow links. This was a problem with 2.0 as well, and I think it may be a flaw in the Visual Basic WebBrowser control. I cannot currently fix this, but if I do happen to find a fix I will release an update ASAP.

As of now I am planning to send it out to the server either later tonight/this morning (11PM here) or later tomorrow. I have had several friends try it and look at a few screenshots as I go along with it and the overall feel seems to be:

  • It is "odd", but "easier" not having a right click menu
  • The lack of a home page option is "strange" (SB pulls your existing IE browser home page, and I could not find a code example to show me how to give an option for this)
  • Not having a double-click in the empty tab bar space make a new tab is "wierd" (Control+T makes a new tab, however there is no hotkey to close a tab).

But other than those 3 negative feelings everyone is complimenting how it runs and how simple it is to use. So I think it will be a much more pleasant (and speedy) experience than before.

Curt - if you want I can hold off and add a right click menu with options, but it will mostly be a re-creation of what is in the menu bar...

I think it would help for things such as OS-specific computer problems, programs, tweaks or strategies, etc...but I do agree that it would most likely fragment the flow of discussion from the various people and how they use their computers, their view on things, and whatnot. How about a "trial" of it for a month to see how it goes, and if it capsizes, just toss the topics into the Living Room (or wherever they are applicable) and delete the Mac/Linux/UNIX/YourOSHere boards. Then its all back to normal, and back to the drawing board.

But I have to disagree with longrun, I love the large content overview the newsletter offers

Alright, after several hours of agrivation and breaking it about 6 times, I can *ALMOST* call SmartBrowse 2.1 "Final".

I took IE7Clone - an open source example browser - ripped out most of the additional stuff (RSS, Phishing Filter Notifications, Popup Notifications, and tons of other stuff) - I tried to make it a simple tabbed browser. The result can be seen in the screenshot below (ignore my taste in music, if you would please :P).

This image shows 3 things:
1) The new and easier to read "Web Security Level" notification icon. Hover over it for the encryption type.
2) The large, yet out-of-the-way Menu Bar. It keeps things big enough for high-res but small enough to keep the web in focus.
3) SmartBrowse can handle Java, JavaScript, Flash, and more; exactly like IE 6/7 does.

I just need to add one or two more things (cleanup on exit, for example) before I call it finished. But it shouldn't be much longer (I am up till 3AM+ now coding, so I have lots of time on my hands). Sit tight!

-Brandon

EDIT: IE7Clone was also used for 2.0. This version is 100% fresh, totally redone. I took out EVERY last thing that wasn't needed. It is easily 2-3x faster.

General Software Discussion / Re: Vista Aero vs. Linux Compiz

It runs great on mine, with closed-source official ATI drivers. Only problem is I have to run it manually at every boot via a command, but I could just add it to my Autostart list and let the computer do the work.

Works fine on Xubuntu with the proper setup - 5/5

How about a take on Need for Speed... "Read for Speed" or simply, RFS!

 ;D I second that!

im using a crappy wood chair with boards stuffed with a thin strip of foam covered in cloth being passed off as cushions, and to make things worse, the chair is to low, and the desk is to high, so I want something that is more comfortable, and higher off the ground.

Sounds like my old chair, I sat on it one day and the whole thing collapsed on me (there was some loud words spoken, too ;D)

I am now on this fuzzy green chair I got from Staples, similar to the one in this image - I like it a lot. You have to put it together yourself (a one hour job), but it has lumbar support, and tilts back a good 45 degrees (great for resting your feet on nearby items, like your bed :P). It keeps me warm and its comfy, and the armrests are made out of wood (can't remember the type right now, but it is a nice looking dark wood) so if I had to recommend one I would say this one is definitely a keeper. 15 year warranty, too!

Living Room / Re: Friday the 13'th...!
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on June 13, 2008, 02:26 PM »
This isn't good for me, I forgot all about it (I am suspicious of the date). I just overclocked my PC and one of my fans stopped working (!) and I am starting to worry about the PC...

But today somebody broke in to our appartment and has stolen my wallet with all the credit cards, driving licence etc...and my pc has just stopped working (dont know what is wrong with it => does not want to start, no screen etc... but fans are working)

But still I do not believe in the friday the 13th... I had just a baaaaad luck

 :o some people...
hope you get your stuff back, and the computer working again

Alright, after a large bit of confusion and a bit of frustration, I have now somewhat figured out how to run multiple threads at the same time. Why is this important? To keep the GUI responsive and let another "worker" do what needs to be done. This became an issue when I attempted to put a ProgressBar to show how SystemCare was moving along into the GUI. It refused to move until everything was done (making the bar itself pointless). So I created another GUI window with an idea, lucking out on that - the window that shows the progress bar ALSO has to run the SystemCare commands - so I made a big 360.

The result: A semi-working, Vista-like window showing what SystemCare is up to. I hope to get it running 100%, but at this point, I am happy it works!

I added a screenshot of the Recycling window along with the SystemCare Status window, to this post, for comparison - I got the size exactly the same as the Vista window, and got the other controls as close as I could. IMO its not too bad.

-Brandon

(FYI: The new SystemCare layout actually is usable, and doesn't have 50 extra things in it - I actually think I got it "right" this time! - screenshot soon)

Living Room / Re: How hot is too hot? Overclocking thoughts...
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on June 12, 2008, 02:44 PM »
Reviving the thread, I have some info that may interest people here at DC that have OEM PC's and want to overclock their CPUs...

NOTE: I did this, I have a stable overclock of 273MHz above stock (it is something, im Celeron D so quiet down C2D/C2Q users >:( ;D) BUT I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU FRY YOUR PC.

Guide:
Following the guide here, EXACTLY, you can get a working stable OC: http://www.zuneboard...ays-compaqs-ect.html

ClockGen note: If you run into issues and have to reset, and when you try to Apply Selection and the PC freezes, delete ClockGen.exe and re-extract a new copy. It took me 20 minutes and 3 resets to figure this out :P

My Results:
My core clock STOCK: 3457MHz (3.46GHz)
My core clock OCed: 3730 (3.73GHz)
Total OC for CPU: 273MHz (0.27GHz)

So an approximate 9% or so overclock, not bad for a first time OCer (CPU-wise). I took it up to 3750MHz, but the PC froze and the sound card emitted a loud (and annoying) buzzing noise, so I have found my *top* overclock. Horray!

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / SmartBrowse 2.1 announced
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on June 12, 2008, 12:21 AM »
Alright, here is some news that Mac lovers will smile about (assuming you use Windows to run SnapSuite)

I somehow lost (yes, totally lost) the code for SmartBrowse, so I re-downloaded the code that it is based off of (IE7Clone) and went to work. The result? A way faster and cleaner (code-wise) program. I announce SmartBrowse 2.1!

It is as simple as it's predecessor, however there are now Copy and Paste buttons, along with a couple other improvements. In an attempt to keep the program as simple as possible, it includes:

  • One toolbar - Back, Forward, Address, Print, etc...
  • A tab bar - all tabs can be closed (up to having 0 tabs open)
  • No right click menu (some will not like this because it means that the "Open In New Tab" option is no more, but that can help memory wise, and keeps the amount of tabs down that people will look at once and close 45 minutes later)
  • No history
  • No RSS
  • A basic popup blocker, via IE7Clone's backbone code (that I have not created myself)
  • No settings
  • Basic printing abilities, including preview
  • A simple status bar with the "lock" icon for security at-a-glance, along with a progress bar for page loads and other info
  • Dual-form (just the main window, and the individual browser windows, managed by the tabs) - no extra overhead
  • Simple interface, no extra "crap" to work around
  • Small file size
  • Credit given to the creators of the tab control and IE7Clone itself
  • ... some other stuff

I am not trying to make this look integrated with SnapSuite 2009, and you will notice the GUI is similar to that of SB 2.0. The idea of this update is code cleanup, feature removal (I only partly removed things with 2.0, and I apologize for that - I have learned to be able to trace things into various forms and follow code to designer (and vice versa) much better, making this a much-needed update for SmartBrowse.

At this time I am not complete with the GUI, so no screenshots. In a nutshell, it is the most basic tabbed browser you will find. Simplicity, no advanced, confusing options, keeping workflow priority and maintaining the task at hand.

NOTE 1: I can add things back in at a later time, if desired. Right now the goal is a simple, easy to use browser with minimal options to get in the way.
NOTE 2: SmartBrowse is, obviously, based off the Internet Explorer engine. Keep IE updated via Microsoft Update!!!
