Thanks

And thanks from me as well! :)

I've been a long time user of Notepad++ which I'm primarily using for editing XML and configuration files (as I'm using Visual Studio for code). But as most of my fellow coders I'm always on the lookout for a worthy alternative. So I'll certainly let you guys know how I think e2 compares to Notepad++ once I have been using it for a while.

Playstation 3

A potent device. But very power hungry! I have it in a closed cabinet and need to leave the cabinet's door open when I'm using it. I've even thought about putting a fan into the cabinet, haha. I once forgot that the PS3 was still running and closed the cabinet doors. A few minutes later I heard loud noise out of the cabinet. The PS3's fan was going crazy. I have the pre-slim version though. The current PS3s should be a bit better.

A big advantage of the PS3 is that it is powerful enough so that Sony can provide new features through SW upgrades (e.g. 3D).

By the way, I was able to install plugins by completely closing FARR (by calling FARR.exe -exit) and then restarting it. But that just doesn't seem  as elegant (seeing that you don't do it with DCUpdater).

ah.. you made me realize.. i can just add commandline args to let you tell farr to unload and reload plugins.. in fact knowing me i probably already did and just forgot..

Indeed, that would make it even simpler.

however, i can provide a smallish (50k or so) dll that you can call from inno setup that will find the process by name and send it the signal, and show how that can be used from inno setup if you like.  i actually use this in all my installers to send a signal and actually CLOSE a running application during installation/uninstallation.

If you could provide that DLL, that would be perfect!

Thanks mouser.

A couple of questions (because I can't get it to work ;)):

- WMUSER is 0x400 or 1024, right?
- What do you mean with: "send the FARR process"? Do you send the message to FARR's main window? How do you get that from DCUpdater?

Thanks.

Living Room / Re: Regular Expressions (Regex) - Your Thoughts?

To all you regex lovers: if you happen to also be a FARR user, please install my FarrWebMetaSearch plugin and write a search for your favourite web site. Then post it on the forum or send it to me directly for inclusion with FarrWebMetaSearch :)

By the way, the following web site has served me well when working with (not too complicated) regexes: http://www.regextester.com/index2.html

Most of my jeans have this square-ish pocket, inside the round-ish one which you use to put your keys, money, hands. They all seem to have it inside the right outer pocket. I don't think I've ever used that little pocket. What's it for?

I've started to create an installer for the FarrMilk plugin (and will do so for the other plugins as well). I'm using Inno Setup for that. So UpdateVersion can now also update the AppVersion field in .iss files.

Still no documentation though.

« Last post by phitsc on November 25, 2010, 10:15 AM »
@phitsc: it's written in C#.  Any specific suggestions for improving the user-experience?  I deliberately made the progression through the program hand-holding, with lots of instruction messageboxes and confirmatory Yes/No dialogs.  Still, any constructive criticism is, of course, welcomed :)

I see. The problem is that the message boxes make it very cumbersome to use the application. And if you've used the app a couple of times, you'll maybe not need that much guidance any more. I think I'd make the app more Wizard-like. You can still provide the info, but not in message boxes, but somewhere around the controls the user needs to change parameters. And having the possibility to go back and forth makes the Yes/No dialogues redundant. So, provide the information (i.e. the hand-holding), but not in such a hindering kind of way. You could also get rid of the instructions of how to use the controls if you'd use more standard controls, e.g. where the user has to choose Vigour, Agility, etc. why not use the little up/down controls so the user can stick with the mouse, etc.

Just like mouser I have currently no use for it. Nevertheless, I gave the app a short try. Well, I guess it is useful, but to be honest, I think the user experience could be greatly improved ;) (and that comes from the guy who's NANY app is a command line tool, hahaha).

I see from your system requirements that the application is .NET based. May I ask, what language is it written in?

Developer's Corner / Re: Some thumbs up for C++
« Last post by phitsc on November 24, 2010, 02:27 AM »
Thanks for pointing that out. I kind of like that guy. Although he writes:
This kind of C++ hating gets me fired up and defensive
he stays surprisingly calm and objective when responding to comments on his own blog (on the C++ hater post you pointed out).

I have to admit that I am very surprised about Evernote re-implementing their Windows application in C++, when I would have expected that for desktop applications C# / WPF is the way to go nowadays. I would really be interested in what technology they used for the GUI. Unfortunately, the question (asked in the comments) was never answered.

Ok, here's a temporary fix for the problem of GooglePlus' options window popping up every time you enter GP when both GooglePlus and FarrMilk are installed:

If you are running GooglePlus v1.1 or lower replace GooglePlus' fscript.js file with this one.

The cause (for those interested):
Spoiler
GooglePlus v1.1 tries to find its ini file relative to the "current directory", which it assumes to be the FARR plugins directory. It seems like FarrMilk is changing the current directory somehow (although I did not find out where or why). So when GooglePlus can't find its ini file, it will assume that it's being launched for the first time and pop up its options window. The above fixed fscript.js file now uses a mechanism built into FARR to find out where it is installed and get the ini file from there.

HorseDuck,

I envy your dedication. And your skills to play instruments. Good idea with the family forum. Have to remember this for when my kids get older ;). Nice to meet you anyway :)

There was a time when gadgets lasted a week on the same charge with regular usage (thinking about my first Palm or my first Digicam). Today, it seems to be widely accepted to have to charge your mobile phone every night (I do so with my current phone). I want powerful gadgets that work weeks or months on the same charge.

I have noticed that my HTC Desire HD battery does drain quickly. Well, it's better than other phones I've had anyways.

I still think battery technology is probably the one biggest disappointment of our time (well, from a gadget lover's point of view. I understand that the world has bigger, more essential problems.). Gadgets get faster, smaller, more powerful. But things that are called mobile phones can hardly get through a day without being re-charged. I'm still waiting for the great break-through...

Living Room / Re: Still holding out, won't join Facebook
« Last post by phitsc on November 19, 2010, 04:53 AM »
I'm not using Facebook or Twitter, although I can see some value in having an easy way of letting a *selected* group of people know about certain stuff I'm doing. But there's the problem, the selection depends on the context. Not everyone needs to know (or should know) everything. Well, passing on information selectively might already be possible with Facebook, I wouldn't even know. What I hate is that all the newer mobile phones come with special Facebook and Twitter clients which I have no use for ;)

I have a similar problem with public forums like this one though. I sometimes wish I could discuss certain things with a selected group of people instead of with the whole world.

Concerning the Desire HD: you guys can't imagine how difficult it is to get thing thing in Europe. There's a German-speaking mobile phone forum that has over 5600 posts in one thread about nothing else but where you can and can't buy one and people complaining that you can't buy the phone anywhere despite HTC saying that it is now widely available. I'm still waiting for mine ...

Here's some more detail about the tool. Currently, it can update the following fields:

  • Name
  • Version
  • ReleaseDate
  • FileSize
  • ReleaseStatus
  • WebSite
  • ShortDescription
  • LongDescription

Some of that information is taken from the source file's contents or resource, others from the source file's attributes (e.g. ReleaseDate or FileSize).

What is taken from where gets obvious by looking at the tools XML configuration file. Some more info to follow...
