Actually I do not find it funny that this behaviour is enabled by default to be honest. Just because of this particular behaviour I will no longer use Opera. I can take care of my own security I do not need addtional tracking to ensure my own security really.

Also http://www.opera.com...ocs/fraudprotection/  cannot pass my proxy security standards(blocked by peerguardian), I have no reason to rely on their unsecure fraudprotection help page :)

Living Room / Is Opera sending information to Opera server everytime you hit enter?
« Last post by kartal on September 15, 2008, 12:37 AM »
I am using peerguardian2 beside my firewall for blocking and tracking. One thing I see in peerguardian window is that everytime I hit enter there is n port 80 connection to opera owned ip adress which is
http://213.236.208.60/ . This may sound paranoid but this does not sound right to me. Can anyone else confirm this? This is pretty much active tracking and I have no idea about the content of the packets.
Why would Opera send http request to opera servers everytime I hit enter. This is not an update check.

To be honest, I have checked their privacy policy and it is no different than google`s privacy policy in that matter. Do not be fooled with "open" in the name.  I actually tried and did not see any notice in speed or performance as well. By subscribing a dns server like that, you are letting them to know everything about your online behaviour and their privacy policy is not convincing. I know that privacy is very overlooked thing when it comes to online services. But seriously privacy is the biggest most important item in the future of technology and net which in return will affect the democracies of our societies. I just hope that companies-institutions will be hold more accountable and individuals will get smarter about their desicions.

Try installing privoxy for ad filtering, it works very well. For faster dns responses you can also try putting your isp`s direct dns adresses in your network settings.

One other thing I can think of using an ftp client to upload stuff. But you need to setup a simple ftp server as well.

zridling and mwang

While I have posted rather these long terms worries under Chrome topic, I am not that worried about chrome itself that much in short terms. It is more of a product and it is rather a solid structure where I can distinguish it and leave it out if I do not want to, at least for now. On the other hand Google`s other services have softer lines you do not know where one is ending another is starting. And that is how google data mines and connects the dots. That is where many people do not understand how these gray  lines can be invasion of your privacy. Google tries extra hard to blend these borders and promote it as convenience to end user. But never ever forget that no for profit entity is interested in your convenience only. They want something back in return, something that is more than they spend (naturally), which is called profit.

I do not use any google service or tool , so it is easy for me to complain and pinpoint. I have made this desicion and it is my desicion. But the problem is that that sticky slug never leaves me around pages. Where ever I go there is google adsense, when I look for a house or apartment, all linked to google maps. ANyways sure I am blocking all adsense , and never click on those google map links. But you get the picture. The issue is I need to work very very hard and give up alot to stay away from Google and its services. If you think this is convenience that is fine but it is hardship for me.

Those who tries ridicule meaningful discussions like privacy would say but your cell phone company can track you , you know that. Yes I know they can use triangulation to find out where I am(if my cell phone has no gps). That is why I turn my cell phone on only when I need to call someone. Now I am not worried about them watching me at all, I am not worried that ohh man they will come and get me. That is childish. But I know and understand the game and the technology where a man is just a blinking light on the map, just a data that leaves a data trail behind. And this idea bothers me so I do not like to be part of the this game. It feels like the very generic scientific experiment where the mice tries to find the exit in a maze. I do not want to be part of this game where my movements are recorded in any possible media, analyzed, destructured, turn into a product and served to me later as a new convenient product that can be used to track my habits further more. If you are fine with this game it is your choice. But there are those like me who want to enjoy life as it is rather than these preplanned, foreseed life styles. In these modern times everything is planned for you, they work very very hard to make sure that you think like what they want you to think. You may try to ridicule this idea if so that means that you have no idea about the limits, the abilities  and the tools of social engineering, public relationship, lobbying, marketing companies. Everything you see on the tv is preplanned to put you in certain mood or feeling. I do not own a tv and I have not watched tv for 10 years(except 5 minutes here and there like at airport for news. And I am probably more informed about many issues than most of you because I use that time to read and analyze rather than spend on shitty tv shows).  Everytime a politician talks about something, they prepare a set so that his/her message is supported extra in case their message is very weak. Now if you are happy with this kind of life where everything is a facade, everyhing is part of a movie set, a hollywood gig or mtv studio, I unwillingly say that is fine. But I do not enjoy this. And Google plays its role in this rig. Google is singled out because it has become so big so omnipresent that it can provide more dangerouss tools to those who like to manipulate societies further. That is why Google should be scrutinized more.

When you see these things happen in a movie you all watch and enjoy, like in minority report or other genre movies. But the fact is that we are already living in the future, just that it seems like many of you sleeping and dreaming in past.

zridling, when you say that "Google has never correlated data", do you have any solid evidence that it never has done it? I myself was not accusing google of particular injustices so I can not give you spesific example. My problem with Google or Googlelikes is a larger issue of dominance and power. I am sure they do not abuse the data they collect(except in chinese goverment case) . But that does not mean they should not be collecting the data they are collecting now. At least the data they are collecting in different services should kept seperate. But you know every of those companies mention sharing your data with 3rd parties to improve their services. This is such a dark and shady area that has kept me away from using services of many companies, including Evernote. everytime I see this third party bullshit, I just stay away.

On the otherhand back to browser wars, I always thought that Opera was more intuitive than others in the game. I am not an Opera user but it seems like Opera has understood things in a different way. And that is probably because of origins of these browsers. As I know Opera is from Europe on the other hand IE and FF have more American slant. I am neither european nor american so i can see the difference under different light.

In contrast to belief that the civilization(mainly western civilization) is going forward and getting better, I would say that civilization is just getting worse and dim. We are getting so good at technique that we put real possible meanings of life and our civilizations all aside. This mastery of technique gives some of those a feeling of an unmatched level of supremacy and confidence. I urge all of you who put great trust and belief in this system of techniques to go back to the roots of enlightment(which is what has started all of this), and start criticizing and questioning everthing around you in an objectible way like the enlightment movement itself encouraged . Those who never put any real thought process in philosophical side of life and social-historical evolution of mankind  should start value the ideas of those who put real energy and effort of thinking into these important matters. These are not merely issues of credit card thefts or selling your silly web browsing habits. What I am talking about here is the future we are preparing for our kids. They will grow up in a future where man has no soul, where an individual means nothing but a just number or rfid tag, where a citizen is nothing but a stupid worker a human shell. I am not buying into this, that is why I have no problem raising my concerns.

We are living in societies in which social engineering, data mining has become a de facto standard of governing masses because of those who think that they have nothing to loose by obeying. I would have no problem if the power corners were flexing their muscles only on those who accept this form of rape. But they have a very big brush and their brush does not  distinguish the ones who accept their will and the ones who do not. So those who accept the rules of game, enjoy it to the maximum and hope that their gain is bigger than those who provide this orgy of opportunities, please do respect rights of others and do not participate in this crowd behaviour, at least try to minimize blind running to every free opportunity due to respect for others.

Allen I understand that some people like that. I am fine with that and I would never ridicule people who consicously ask for such service. As long as you know what you are getting and giving away I am fine.  But I "consciously" do not want such service and I would like companies to "consciously" respect that.

Zridling,

Google is singled out because Google has become a data octopus. Your bank knows your bank records, they do not know what contacts you have on your phone or what your plan is next week. Your phone company may know your calls and contacts but they do not know about your purchasing history(they would pay millions to ge thou)  or what you watch on youtube. Now every company has only one side of the picture. On the other hand Google has many sides of the picture by search, email, map, health records, google checkout, book search, calendar, youtube, driving directions, you name it. It is conducting masssive data mining to figure out who you are and what you might be interested in to sell you more ads. That is very very legitimate concern aand noone should be this powerful. Sooner or later Google will abuse its power like every powerful entity in the world or world history. When it comes to for profit entities, abuse will be unquestionable result especially when we have corrupt politicians, legalized bribing(lobbies), and every kinds of social-national scares and paranoias(boogey man will get you that is why we shared your info to save you and your privacy bullsh$t)

On the otherhand, as a company Google is an abstract structure. When I say Google may act in harmful way when it comes to privacy, i do not mean this abstract being only. One worker at Google may steal all this data, there might be a security breach, spammers may hack Google etc. These are all possible scenarios and one might get ready for it.

I am neither a freak nor a tinfoil hat person. In my view like all good human beings I deserve respectful treatment of myself and my entity that represents me in any possible media. This is not a matter of conspiracy this is rather asking for a better future for mankind. If you never care for your rights you will never get them. But please do not cast shadow on those who ask for it. Trying to riducule meaningful rights is rather childish.

You know most evil things can also be blamed on sloppiness as well. That is not an excuse. Google thought that they had a free pass (They generally have ) . And because of people like us who are the people with tinfoil hats, crazy paranoids, conspiracy theorist, now they will need to write a proper policy statement.

RFID -- Radio Frequency Identification -- is transforming the way companies track inventory, artwork and even law briefs, but some fear it could be used for more "Orwellian" pursuits. A panel of leading technology developers and pioneer end-user corporations explores this promising and yet maligned emerging technology that both empowers consumers and raises privacy issues.
