General Software Discussion / Google's thumbnail pop-ups

Those not-so-little images of the website that popup on the right of the search results are awful.

Anyone know how to turn them off permanently?

If I track something down that's steam-only and we give this a try, what sort of payment options would be acceptable?

You can either PayPal me the money or send me DC credits for the amount.  Easy peasy...

Consider yourself donated-to!  :Thmbsup:

This list is going to snowball, I imagine. Is there some standard way we could roll these bookmarks into downloadable files to be imported into browsers, to save a ton of paging and clicking?

For my 2 cents:

The downside is that's it's delivered via Steam. I have had a lot of trouble with those clods. They cannot seem to get the hang of my address at all, and keep insisting that I don't live in the country that I do!

One of us could always gift the game to you...then shouldn't have to worry about their GeoIP thing hanging you up.

That's a good option, and one I will definitely bear in mind! Thou art most kind.

But it's good to hear that I'm not the only one that's had trouble with Steam. I really loathe stubborn GeoIP stuff...

It's terrible. They certainly do not add anything at all to my gaming experience. Just another flabby layer of crud in some terrible black and grey UI. Who are these clowns?

oh. maybe we can upload for the next transportica update - which should be around December 2011.

I shall look forward to that. I always enjoyed my Sunday afternoon CT-cranking session.

Yet more good suggestions folks, thank you. I would play chess but when at the in-laws it seems to act like a magnet for spectators.

In addition, in case anyone else is hunting around similarly:

The original X-COM, "UFO: Enemy Unknown" ticked so many boxes for me. It's the only game I've ever played through three full times. There's an updated version which is really nice here: http://ufo.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/   - and it's only $4.99!?

The downside is that's it's delivered via Steam. I have had a lot of trouble with those clods. They cannot seem to get the hang of my address at all, and keep insisting that I don't live in the country that I do!

Hi,

Build 69:

"@" isn'n recognized.

The replacement text "abc.xyz@aol.de" becomes "abc.xyzaol.de" when the mnemonic is replaced.

Ok, that's working here - I have several email addresses in my list that still seem ok. Can you show me exactly what you have in the mnemonic and replacement field please? A screenshot would be good.

Do you mean to give timns a Christmas tattoo?

See? see why I included him in the poem!?

Thanks nudone - actually you were the reason I cranked this out in the first place! I was looking through some old Codex Transportica stuff I have lying around, and found a half-written version of something similar from way back :)

I know, maybe I should take a couple of days off! Now, what could I use as an excuse...?

(with apologies to whoever wrote the original poem, which seems rather unclear)

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through my browser,
not a creature was stirring - except of course, mouser;

Questions were typed in the forums with care,
in the hope that some answers soon would be there;

Donation Coders were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of software danced in their heads;

cranioscopical had just logged back on,
and was all settled down for a long Winter's pun;

When out in the forum there arose such a thread!
We all logged back on to see what was said;

Away to my firefox I ran in a dash,
tore open my tabs and updated my flash;

And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but some amazing new apps, in time for New Year;

A fun competition to show your ability:
create a new app, game or utility;

Code it, upload it and throw it into the mix,
and then let everyone find the bugs to be fixed

No offense meant, in fact let me be clear:
I am of course referring to my own entry here ;)

But even right now, as the deadline is nearing:
34 apps and they are still appearing!

This is why DC is my number one:
community, spirit, software and fun;

And so I exclaim, to all who can hear:
this NANY is great, and just wait till NEXT year!

What about the following :

All the names are available on .com

I'm amazed askapic.com is still available. That's pretty good, I think.

General Software Discussion / New MailWasher - ugh
« Last post by timns on December 20, 2010, 04:20 PM »
I was just reading the recent RoboForm upgrade thread (thanks, I'll stick with v6!) and something that Carol Haynes said rang a nasty bell. And I quote:

"It's called taking people hostage:

Sell a product with free lifetime upgrades/updates
Promote widely and get millions of people hooked in to the product
Change the licensing model"

Does anyone else here feel exactly the same way about MailWasher? I really really regret moving away from MW6. It was *not at all clear* that I was moving from a purchased product to a yearly license. And on top of that, the new MW is pretty crummy for a multitude of reasons.

Is there anything else out there I should look at?

Wossissden.com (you may have to say it out loud)

:) I had similar ideas but was told someone has to be able to spell it on hearing it....

Curse those practicalities. For what it's worth, I like cranio's suggestion... there could be some fun aspects to uploading confusing images to see what people make of them. Does anyone remember those weird photos they used to show on "Ask the Family?"

Pinnheaded it down  :Thmbsup:

-cranioscopical (December 19, 2010, 01:58 PM)

I should really stop using that term. I have a bad habit of using phrases in forums and emails that would just imply gentle levity if heard with my tone of voice, but if read by a bad-tempered recipient without the context of timbre, are enough to trigger a serious hissy fit.

I refer, of course, to the infamous "does Brenda need to be cattle-prodded" incident of last year  :D

Anyway! Thank you for letting me know that it's ok again. I shall assume you were teasing me by showing two "n's" in pinhead there  :P

Now I can focus on the last missing features.

Try Magic the Gathering Online. Addictive. Also can be costly if you want it to be. :)

Nice suggestion - I did enjoy MtG a great deal back in the day. If it can also be played offline, that would be a good start.

Keep 'em coming!

General Software Discussion / I want a game for Christmas: turn-based
« Last post by timns on December 19, 2010, 12:52 PM »
So anyway, change of plan. I'm going to be in the UK for Christmas, and by the looks of it, probably snowed-in with the in-laws.  :o

I'll have a reasonable spec'd laptop to hand, and I think I'd like to take a nice game with me to wile away a few hours, something to get my teeth into after the Christmas day sprout mountain.

I'm looking for something turn-based since I have the reflexes of a sloth, and ideally in the fantasy/sci-fi genre. Strategy or RPG is good.

Hit me up with some nice suggestions please folks!

Directory Opus has rename features which includes sequential numbering and can also parse file pathnames to pull out fields. Couple this with its RegEx capabilities and you may well get somewhere.

There's an excellent forum where you could ask this specific question and probably get a result.

Bug Fixes

    * Completions with Capital Letters now complete correctly
    * Pop-up window still pops up when Auspex is minimized to the tray
