General Software Discussion / Re: Spam filtering
« Last post by Deozaan on October 23, 2008, 11:35 PM »
What're people using and loving these days?

Gmail.  After about two years now with a Gmail address I get only perhaps 5-10 spam messages a year. Most of them are from Xara, who just won't unsubscribe me even after multiple attempts.

It has all of the alphanumeric characters, but it's still missing some special characters like {^$%@*} etc.

UltraMon works wonders for this. Any window (as long as it doesn't have custom skinning) will get an extra button to make it move to the exact same coordinates on the opposite monitor. So if it is maximized it will be maximized on the other monitor. If it's in the bottom right corner, that's where it will go on the other monitor.

UltraMon is a must-have for dual monitor setups. I especially like the ability to have a task bar on the second monitor set up so that each monitor's task bar shows only the applications that are displayed on their respective monitor. It's great for multitasking with several applications open without cluttering the task bar with tiny selection boxes or when XP stacks multiple instances of the same application.

3. Analog "anything"

What I find very interesting about Analog vs. Digital is that for many years the controllers for videogame consoles had only digital buttons (on or off) but when the analog joystick(s) came along (and eventually even analog (pressure-sensitive) buttons), it was one of the greater innovations brought to videogaming.

It's the only case I can think of where digital came first and analog is actually considered superior technology.

Living Room / Re: Tea anyone - Bubble Tea that is....
« Last post by Deozaan on October 23, 2008, 02:21 PM »
Sounds like it's not even tea, necessarily:

The Drink Components  TM  of bubble tea is made with 4 ingredients:

   1. Flavor:  Flavored powder, flavored syrup, fruit purees or fresh fruit
   2. Creamer:  Powder creamer, half-n-half, full milk or other creamer
   3. Sweetener:  Sugar, simple sugar syrup, fructose or honey
   4. Liquid:  Water, tea or milk

Tapioca Pearls or the "fun" stuff on the bottom add a new element to the bubble tea beverage.  Tapioca is distinctive, chewy and ultimately addicting. For an added twist, coconut meat can be added for a new flavor dimension.

Wow. I've never thought that someone had "alphabet" so similar to mine :) The only difference was the symbols order.

Ha! Mine just goes through them A-M with no dots, then N-Z with dots. I've now added numbers and most of the symbols.

Living Room / Real Life Tron on an Apple IIgs
« Last post by Deozaan on October 20, 2008, 02:55 PM »
An amazing true story of Tron:

One day, when Marco and I were playing against two computer opponents, we forced one of the AI cycles to trap itself between its own walls and the bottom game border.  Sensing an impending crash, it fired a missile, just like it always did whenever it was trapped.  But this time was different – instead of firing at another trail, it fired at the game border, which looked like any other light cycle trail as far as the computer was concerned.  The missile impacted with the border, leaving a cycle-sized hole, and the computer promptly took the exit and left the main playing field.  Puzzled, we watched as the cycle drove through the scoring display at the bottom of the screen.  It easily avoided the score digits and then drove off the screen altogether.

Shortly after, the system crashed.

Our minds reeled as we tried to understand what we had just seen.  The computer had found a way to get out of the game.  When a cycle left the game screen, it escaped into computer memory – just like in the movie.

I've had problems. Some Windows Updates have caused my PC to blue screen upon boot. Others have caused various strange issues.

It doesn't happen to me often, but it has happened more than once.

The too-little-too-late new tab button. Really, if we wanted to go all the way to the right hand corner to open a new tab we'd just double click that micro-thin layer of blank tab bar above all our open tabs. All hail Tab Mix Plus.

Ctrl-T works great.

I just tried, it doesnt seem to do those special characters well, or at all really.  I got it to full width by making sure all the bits around it were removed, then I selected it all and clicked the expand button. and this is the result

I got it to go to the full width of the page by isolating the section it was in. I actually needed to do it twice because there were two embedded sections. However, I too had weird characters replacing some of the text.

Weird. I tried so many times clicking "expand" and it never worked.

I've found one program, Active Player Screensaver, but it refuses to play that video link (complaining about a decompressor). What's funny, it does not play even the sample feed it has configured...

Maybe it's a codec problem. You could try installing the K-Lite Codec Pack.

In Windows XP you can get the Windows XP Video Screensaver PowerToy that uses Windows Media Player as the screensaver.

I think that you should be able to select a playlist to play, from the options. If you can get the stream saved as a playlist file, it should work.

When I read the topic (before seeing the screenshot) I thought some idiot had really made a calculator program called FECAL.

Is there any way to test the game before actually buying it ?

This is where World of Goo originated from:

I've had these on my computer for the past few years. You can find other fun stuff there as well, such as Attack of the Killer Swarm.

General Software Discussion / Re: Third Party Check Disk replacement?
« Last post by Deozaan on October 15, 2008, 06:09 PM »
DiscWizard was useless because it wouldn't let me install, saying a newer version was already installed (Acronis TrueImage).

SeaTools appears to be useless, as it tells me the drive fails the self tests but doesn't offer any method of repairing it.

Any other suggestions aside from replacing the drive?

You could try DiskFixer. It's part of the Avanquest Fix-it Utilities package. There is a trial version available for download

DiskFixer found no problems with the drive.

Two approaches - replace the drive or do a full backup of what you can and then use the manufacturers drive prep tools to low level format it before you set up the partitions again.

I would say the latter approach looks appropriate given your overall SMART stats.

The drive is a Seagate Barracuda ST3120022A. I'm currently downloading SeaTools and DiscWizard (Which is an Acronis tool) to try this out.

I already made a full backup of the drive using Acronis TrueImage before doing anything with TrueCrypt. But wouldn't restoring the image restore the bad sector again?

Just tried out PrintWhatYouLike to print this article for school and the results were terrible.

First attempt: Apostrophes and other symbols didn't display properly. And the entire first page was almost completely blank.
Second Attempt: Symbols still not displaying properly. Got first page working, but the article width is limited to about half the physical page width. Is there any way to remove that stupid width limitation?
