Could have amazing security implications ....

If you can't delete emails all sensitive email info will be held in public storage forever - what are the chances of some loopholes being found to mine that information ???

Just curious - what is the point of Google giving hundreds of email addresses to people but not allowing people to sign up directly?

Am I missing something here?

(I don't particularly want/need a gmail account, and do we really need yet another standard emerging for IM  - surely it would be better if interoperability became the order of the day rather than increasing dirversity! I already have 4 IM clients, I really don't want any more using up valuable CPU cycles)

You could try http://www.karenware...ertools/ptdirprn.asp. I used this ages ago but haven't currently got it installed so can't remember exactly what or how it will print.

Karen has a lot of interesting programmes, all of which are free and you can download the source code too.

Thanks for that I will give it a try.

Actually I have been fiddling with it and it seems to work.

Interestingly once you have installed their codec you can play .aa files in Windows Media Player without the Audible plugin!

The other odd thing is that if you play .aa files in Windows Media Player they 'remember' their last played position (which can be useful) but oddly if you try and convert a file that has been played it only converst from the 'remembered' position to the end ???

Weird or what ...

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: New License Key Page now online !

Didn't cause me problems.

One thought though - once the license is entered why allow a new key to be registered?

Would it not be better just to remove the registration link, and reflect the registered user in the About window?

WinTasks Pro 5 might do what you want.

It now includes a script language so you could possibly produce a script to raise an alarm when CPU usages goes above a certain level.

Not sure how easy the script language is to use though.

See: Sample Scripts for WinTasks at http://www.liutiliti.../whitepapers/paper9/
The built-in scripting language in WinTasks 5 Professional can be a very powerful tool. On this page, you can find a collection of sample scripts.

Sample Script #1
This script will decrease the priority of Internet Explorer if it uses more than 30% of the CPU.

  if process_file = "iexplore.exe" and process_cpu_usage > 30 then
dec
endif

Just a shame it seems to be my ass that gets kicked a lot.

I set up like this to allow me to separate out Audio, video and graphic apps so that they can run without virus apps (no internet) etc., and avoid all the usual crap that accumulates under Windoze and slows the system down. They all share the same Temp folder and PageFile too, and data storage is common to all installations.

Trouble is that even though I spent hours planning and setting up my ideal system, I still install almost everything on drive C: too - so day to day stuff still runs like swimming through treacle and my "ideal" parallel installations get under used.

Good in principle though ;)

Back on topic ...

I realise WinRAR has pretty minimal explorer capabilities, but I still personally find it unnecessary. I would prefer it is when I double click on an archive it simply shows the contents. The ability to move up to the parent directory doesn't really serve any purpose to my mind, and it gets confusing if you navigate about, forget where you are and start adding files to the archive.

OK maybe I am simple minded, but I would prefer to see the archive contents only (possibly with a tree view option), and if I want to add files etc. I just drag them in from Explorer.

It is possible to work like this, so I am being over picky probably, but it seems a more logical and less confusing approach to my simple mind.  :-[

I see your point. It isn't stinginess on my part but time but more to do with time.

I listen to a lot of audio books when I drive. I buy most online these days via www.audible.com and the audible app is totally crap. Most books are burnt over numerous CDs (often 8, 9 or 10) and they tend to fade out each disk with an overlap with the next (very irritating).

My car has a CD changer in the trunk (I'll make a concession to American vernacular), but I don't want to have to fill it up with a single book (and then stop the car to reload the cartridge halfway through).

Ideally I want to put the books on a Zen Micro in MP3 or WMA format or make an MP3 disc for a portable player, but there is no way of generating this except for burning to CDs, ripping the CDs and then editing out the overlaps. I have literally dozens of books, so even with cheap media it still works out expensive to burn and chuck discs, and it is incredibly time consuming (even with a fast burner). If I try to save money by using CDRW discs then burning is even slower, plus I have to reformat a lot - even more time.

This isn't the only application which would make this useful for me, but is the main one at the moment.

If no one knows of one of these how hard would it be to produce such a programme ?

Sorry for any offence - no political intentions at all in posting that link, just trying to add a little humour.

I have absolutley no intention of getting into any political arguments on these forums. As you say that is not what they are for.

Ozzy1, the startup app does sound useful actually..  but sounds like it might be tricky to do properly.. maybe someone can tell us about any success they may have had in the past with apps that change the order or delay of startup programs..

Perhaps a utility could be built that grabs and deletes all non-essential utitiles from the normal startup locations. This list of startup programmes could be used for the basis of a list of apps that could be editied in therms of order and delay and then started one by one in the set order ?? It could be run periodically as new apps are installed to grab new startup items.

kind of large monitor, say, 19" or above. you do something common like deleting a file, maybe dragging it into the recycle bin and then a confirmation box pops up in the middle of the screen which has to be acknowledged with a click (or by hitting a key).

the annoyance is that my mouse is nowhere near the box that needs confirmation - it would be better if the box in question opened up under where my mouse cursor is positioned (wherever that may be) then i can just click and carry on.

i know there is the option with some utils to have the mouse cursor jump to the button that is in focus but i find that sort of thing really interrupts the flow of using the interface.

Hitting Return does it for me ?

General Software Discussion / Another Free Clipboard Tool - Yankee Clipper
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 20, 2005, 06:07 AM »
Yankee Clipper 3, see http://www.intelexual.com/products/YC3/

This is another freeware clipboard utility.

It seems to coexist quite happily with ClipBoard Help and Spell, but has the advantage that it also collects images and RTF clips.

There is a commercial version too YCX ($14.99US) which adds a lot of extra facilities.

Some of these would be nice in CH&S ...

The capture key assignments don't match their functions in this version.

In reality ...

C+S+PrintScreen - captures fixed region
C+A+PrintScreen - captures Windows Object

but this is not what the Capture menu says ;)

General Software Discussion / Useful Windows 'inventory' tool
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 20, 2005, 05:08 AM »
Check out http://www.dogkennels.net/filemap/

It is a really simple tool that takes a snapshot file list of three main windows directories and can tell you if files have been added or deleted.

It can be set to run on system boot and warn you if the system directories have changed since last boot.

Interesting if you want to know what is installed in the background during programme installation and/or potential spyware threats hiding in the system folders.

I have to say the user interface is a bit clunky (to many confirmation boxes to click) but the author is aware of that and will probably sort it out some time. Meanwhile it is a useful little utility.

At the mo you can grab individual objects from screen. SnagIT can caputure whole windows by autoscrolling the window, could that be added to ScreenCapture?

Also is it possible to capture just a menu ? At the moment the only way I can capture menus is by using the timer mode and doing a whole screen capture: but I may be missing something.

Finally how about making the timer delay user configurable (in Preferences).

Cheers.
