Hello Deozaan

...

Many people find Mr Bottoms's information about freeware products to be not just useless but misleading and sometimes dangerous.

...

You may need to forgive Mr Silverstein's passion in these matters but he very much dislikes the damage cocaine causes people and just as you might object to having members of the Ku Klux Klan using DC software forums for their own ends, Mr Silverstein sees Mr Bottoms as equally immoral and undeserving of your hospitality.

...

One additional factor is that Ari Silverstein does not find anything to admire in a cocaine smuggler who has caused the loss of life & liberty of other accomplices as well as all the damage street drugs cause.

Franklin2

Franklin,

First of all, thanks for discussing this in a calm, friendly manner. I'm afraid I still have to say that you bring no credibility to the situation. I have no reason to trust anything you say. I have no information that makes me believe that you are a credible authority on the discussion. I am not calling you a liar, I'm just saying that you and I do not have a friendship or any kind of history that I can rely on to trust your words or your judgement on the matter. It also does not help that because of the wonderful technology of the internet, you may even be "Silverstein" posing as someone else. There's no way for me to know if you are or not. To reiterate, I am not implying that you are lying or being deceitful. I am merely stating the fact that I have no way of knowing whether everything is as you say or not.

I, too, find nothing to admire in a drug smuggler or a member of the KKK. But I have yet to find anything to admire about you or Silverstein. How could I? As far as I knew, neither of you even existed until today.

I'm sure that most of us agree that drug smugglers/dealers and the KKK are unpleasant groups of people and that society would be better without them, but it is not my responsibility or desire to keep software I write out of their hands. There are instances where such an attitude may be irresponsible. However, I don't believe that any software provided here at DonationCoder could directly aid the KKK or in the smuggling/dealing of drugs, so why should I care if someone who is a member of the KKK or is a drug smuggler uses DC software? The idea of a programmer getting background checks on everyone who ever uses his software is ludicrous.

Here's a rhetorical question: If everything you ever got in life was based on your strict adherence to morality, would you ever be deserving of anything?

We have had threads here at DonationCoder about unethical and scumbag "companies" that scam people by selling free software or through other "dirtbaggery." There certainly is a place here on these forums for exposing bad deals and bad companies, but Silverstein's inflammatory comments are unwanted and unwelcome. Civil discussion about software is generally what we're all about, though from time to time we do bring up other subjects. But this site is not about defaming and smearing people. Even if it is true, and once again I am not denying that what you and Silverstein have said may be true, the more appropriate method of warning us against the poor software being recommended by Bottoms is to tell us that the software is poor and the recommendations shouldn't be trusted. Going on a diatribe about drug smuggling and assassinations and what-not about people we have never heard of nor do we care about is not going to get you welcomed into the community.

Why is it bull

Well, I admit I overreacted. Calling the human race "the human cancer" is mostly what I was referring to as a load of bull. On top of that, your statement was put matter-of-factly instead of as a personal statement of belief or opinion.

I, too, am getting sick and tired of what humanity has seemingly become, as portrayed by the media, but I do not in anyway believe that we've really become so bad as to be considered a cancer or that we're even really as bad as the media makes us out to be. Everything we see in the news and on TV focuses so much on the negative, it's easy to think that's how people really are. And maybe you can't relate to this in the same way since you're from the UK, but I believe that underneath the cold exterior, people are really people like they were on September 12th, 2001.

Even Anne Frank, in the middle of the Nazi's extermination of the Jews said "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are truly good at heart."

It is my opinion that we need less cynics who think the human race is equivalent to a cancer and more people with hope and faith in the goodness of people. Please don't misunderstand that statement. I'm not saying the world would be better off without you, Carol. What I'm saying is the world would be better off if you made the choice to have faith in the goodness of others, rather than assuming the worst of humanity.

Mahatma Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world."

Why do you call casual games stupid? :)

I didn't mean to make a blanket statement on all casual games. What I meant was that I really thought Peggle was more like Bejeweled, instead of a glorified Pachinko machine. I tried Bejeweled and have come across many of its n-thousand clones. I even tried out Puzzle Quest. I just do not like Bejeweled and for some reason (probably without much good reason) have clumped PopCap games all in the same category of good-for-nothing time wasters.

I like casual games, too. But maybe I just like to trick myself into thinking that my casual tastes are more complex than match-three repetition.

Right now I'm really enjoying Animal Crossing: City Folk. That's pretty darn casual, when there's not even an end to the game and no real purpose in playing it.
7557
Silverstein,

I think one of the main issues here is that you're new here, coming in guns ablaze in an attempt to tell everyone how terrible "Bear" Bottoms is by reviving a 2 year old thread everybody has forgotten about (and my guess is that most people didn't even know about), linking to websites that either result in 404 or are just newsgroup conversations where anybody can say anything (i.e. they have no substance), much like you and I can have this conversation here.

I'm not saying that you're lying, or that "Bear" is a saint. But what's the point in digging up a two year old thread that has been long forgotten, and in such an inflammatory manner?

Thanks for posting this Lashiec.

I had been avoiding Peggle for a while (since before it was previously mentioned here on DC) because I dismissed it as another one of those stupid casual games such as Bejeweled. But since it was free I decided to let Steam download it for me and I tried out the first Stage today. It's actually not that bad. I don't see myself sinking hours and hours into it, but it seems fun for a go.

And thanks, lanux, for posting about the nVidia offer again! I never took advantage of it before because I wasn't interested in just a demo of portal. But since I see it comes with some other things, I'll be getting that as well!

Living Room / Re: In-car GPS
« Last post by Deozaan on December 14, 2008, 06:35 PM »
I have a pretty good sense of direction, but last August my wife and I had to go to Los Angeles and had no idea how to navigate and were quite worried about the big city traffic, etc. With the car rental we also got a Garmin GPS. I'm not sure which model it was. It sure was a life saver!

I nicknamed the unit "Stella" because of the female voice and because she was like a guide from the stars (satellite).

You can just type in the address or search for restaurants or whatever and it has clear directions. There were a couple of times where I missed the turns or Stella neglected to vocally remind me that a turn was coming up, but she quickly recalculated the route and I got back to where I needed to be without much delay. I would absolutely recommend an in-vehicle GPS from my short (two-day) experience with one.

I've had my eye on acquiring my own "Stella" since that visit. I haven't researched them them much since their price is a bit beyond my budget but I'm also concerned about the cost of keeping the maps updated. If the cost isn't inhibiting, get one!

I've uploaded attachments of the current version to the original post.

I've never tried building the project for Mac computers so I don't even know if it works, so I need Mac users to test it and let me know if it works.

Also be aware of the following information (already mentioned in the original post): The only way to start a new game is to exit and restart. It doesn't announce a winner.

There was an interesting article up on 43Folders that touches on this most touchy of topics:

Link: http://www.43folders...008/12/09/pretending

Off-Topic of the thread, but in response to the article above
As quoted in the article:

Apparently, you should pretend to like anyone who pretends to like you. This is called "networking," and it's why the web smells like feet.

I think this is why I just don't "get" social networking sites like MySpace/Facebook or even microblogs such as Twitter. Random people start following me or adding me to their friends list and at first there's an impulsive obligation to "friend" them back. But then I remember that Tom is not my friend, and neither are any of the anonymous strangers who randomly put me on their lists.

I'd also like to point out that this thread seems particularly sensitive to e-mail etiquette. Well, in my opinion, it is not proper e-mail etiquette to mass forward e-mails at all.

I think that most people don't know about BCC hiding e-mail addresses, so I have more patience when asking/instructing the use of BCC. But they ought to know that spam is unsolicited e-mail, and I have no qualms about informing other people that I consider mass-forwards to be unsolicited.

Description
HexCards is a card game in which two players strategically place hexagonal cards on a playing field to capture the other's cards. Each of the six sides of each card is assigned a numeric value ranging from 1 to 10 (10 is displayed as an "A"). When you place a card on the playing field, you can capture cards in adjacent tiles if the value for that specific side is larger than the value on the adjacent card's side. I just ask them to stop. They're the ones who are the "guests" in your e-mail account. They should respect your desires for your account just as they should respect any other part of your property.

I'm nice about it, but I let them know I don't enjoy forwards and chain letters etc., and that I don't want my e-mail address visible to hundreds of others across the internet due to mass forwarding. In a display of paranoia I've even asked people to remove my last name from their address book so that even if they do add me to the mass-forward list at least the "strangers" don't have my full name.

Everyone I've asked has complied. Usually this means I stop getting any e-mail from them except the rare personal message, but I'm not complaining because that's exactly what I asked for: Personal mail only.

I have no problem with the idea of having to be rude to someone (if I have to) in order to get them to stop bugging me with spam. After all, if you ask nicely and they persist, they are the ones being rude.

2Deozaan

Interesting idea but, personally, I don't believe in many error mesages screenshots posted through Internet. It is to easy to create fake one.

The general idea of this thread is to post screen shots of any genuine error messages you've come across that are funny, strange, absolutely not at all helpful, or even confusing. I'll start off.

Hm. Why screenshots? Ctrl+C works globally for all MessageBox dialogs in Windows...
-fenixproductions (December 07, 2008, 09:27 AM)

I didn't realize that Ctrl-C would work if the message box wouldn't let me select the text with my mouse.

As for the verity of those screenshots, I took the first two myself. So if you still think they're photoshopped or faked, thanks for letting me know you think I'm a liar.

« Last post by Deozaan on December 08, 2008, 07:02 AM »
I'm not saying I'm in favor of DRM, which as f0dder said is or will be broken. What I'm talking about is that the article (from nearly two years ago) says Vista will cripple your ability to view media and recommends nobody upgrades to Vista ever. Yet in the past two years, where is the evidence that this is happening?

I've rented a movie from Netflix and tried to watch it on my computer (Windows XP) and it wouldn't play due to DRM. But that wasn't the fault of Microsoft/Windows. That was the fault of Sony for putting DRM on the DVD.

I am opposed to them trying to force us to buy certain hardware, but in the two years following that "scaremongering" article, I haven't heard/seen any evidence that Vista is doing that.

Ehtyar: What control does Hollywood have over my computer system? I genuinely want to know what you mean by that.

I recall there was some software that grabbed random images from Google Image searches uses keywords you entered in. It had the option to enable SafeSearch (so you don't accidentally end up with porn on your desktop at work) but SafeSearch wasn't (and perhaps still isn't) entirely reliable. In fact, one of the first few wallpapers it selected for me had nudity, so I uninstalled it.
