Check out the Behringer Eurorack series if you get a chance

The one that I've been looking at is this:

http://www.behringer...oducts/X1204USB.aspx

Analog cables & computers just do not mix at the low end. Headphones? Sure. Speakers? Maybe. Anything else? Forget it.

So, USB should solve those problems.

Incidentally, my dead mixer is the Eurorack UB1204FX-Pro. Bought it just before the next series came out. :) Figgers... It died during the trip from Korea.

has everyone gone mad?

Looks like it from where I'm sitting.  ;D

Yep.

"Save the environment! Recycle. Be environmentally friendly. Just as long as you throw everything out and buy new ones..."

Yeah... F*** that.

1) REDUCE
2) Reuse
3) recycle

What part of that got lost?

It looks like you could get the same results with the software you have by using The Levels features - or Auto Levels. Or by using some other image manipulation tool you find easier to use, as they are all likely to have some kind of Levels function built in.

You could tweak things further but 99% of the work will be done with a very quick click on Auto Levels. Maybe that's what you've already tried though.

+1

Effects like "Find edges" could help out. Try recording a macro and using a few effects to get things working. You'd have a 1-click solution then.

For 4a, I believe "fix" really means "replace" in most circumstances. Got an iPod? Battery die? Oh... Just replace the iPod... :)

Regarding 4b, does "last" mean more than 6 months, or as long as the warranty + 1 day?

Bad ass? Nothing like understatement! :)

I can imagine some guy that:

  • Chews railroad spikes
  • Spits nails
  • Drinks lava
  • Pisses moonshine

And that guy is a pussy in comparison to the guy who built the levee there! :P

Which is more than I can say for most of the 'modern' music tech I've owned.  ;D

And that, sadly, is the most telling thing...

Commoditization of products for a consumer economy means building in "breakability" (planned obsolescence) so that people need to go out an buy a new one. e.g. Take the lightbulb and its history.

That has filtered down an become the normal way of doing things.

Engineering is now the art of how to make things last just a tad bit more than the warranty... Anyone have that happen? Something goes out of warranty and a month later, it breaks?

I wish I were insanely rich as I'd love to open a chain of stores called "Forever", with only products that are designed to last as long as possible. I think the shelves would be sparsely stocked though...

On the music gear side... I need to get a new mixer. Thank you very much to the new way of building "quality" products that maintain their quality for the life of the warranty...

This simple book is meant to get you started in programming. The title says it’s the hard way to learn to write code;
but it’s actually not. It’s only the “hard” way because it’s the way people used to teach things.

Old skool~! :D

This is hilarious:

When William Shatner gets a Lifetime Achievement Award from Canada's Governor General, he shows appreciation as only Shatner can. In this short film, the most famous space cadet in showbiz takes helm of our heritage and treats us to a memorable rendition of Canada's national anthem.

Hmmm... Will it be open sourced as GPL, LGPL, BSD? :P

Nope:

CORRECTED: Microsoft Strongly Denies VB 6 Open Source Rumors, Sources Retract Statement

Microsoft's Doug Seven, director of product management for Visual Studio tools and languages, strongly denied a story reported here earlier that Microsoft planned to open source VB 6.

"There's no more solid source than me. It's not true," he said.

The statement was in response to a story published earlier on this site that said that the rumor of VB6 being opened source, first heard at Tech-Ed then spread on Twitter, was confirmed by an independent source.

Our source has since retracted that statement. The original poster on twitter has also retracted his statement.

RDN apologizes for the error.

Yes.  That's the fundamental, core difference between Windows and iOS.  It's the main characteristic that allows Apple to be Apple, and Windows to be Windows.

Not "Windows to be Windows", but "every other sane OS out there to be a sane OS". ;)

Apple locks things down so that nobody can do anything that they don't want to allow. This is in stark contrast to other proprietary systems that let you do things. e.g. bada gives you fantastic flexibility, but it also has total encapsulation at the same time. Moral of the story -- you don't need to be a prick.

And, and, I've recently experienced the totally sucks balls nature of OS file storage. I tried out a few mp3 player apps in an attempt to avoid itunes - none of these mp3 players is aware that there are mp3 files already on the machine, they are also blind to each others mp3 files - how. dumb. is. that. It's beyond moronic - totally utter crap.

You have no idea just how bad it is... It's worse...

To access a media file in iOS, you need to get it using a special method with a special protocol, e.g. "ugly://path.to.files/83456/sfdsd/39yheghbihgeirhefhhvduvghr.mp3" And they are that ugly. On top of that, you have no access to the file at all, the same way that you'd do it by trying to hot link an MP3 from another web site on your own web site. Actually, on a web site you'd have some control, but with Apple, the tools available area all crippled.

Then each application has private storage...

Idiotic? Well, I can see some reason in there, but yeah... it's pretty dumb.

As I have mentioned elsewhere on this forum, I can't suggest strongly enough that you check out HTML Dog for the HTML4 & CSS.  The author has laid out a beautiful and simple tutorial that teaches these two topics together, the way they should be taught.

That is very well laid out. I went through the beginner tutorials quickly, and it follows a nice progression.

One that was just announced on here for a DC special that I use a lot is e.  It's definitely not your standard text editor, but once you get into using it, you really see the power of it.

That's one of those editors that I never tried out because the information at the web site isn't enough to warrant downloading the trial. I need to see screenshots and more details before I download a trial. (I hate when sites only have screencasts.)

I tried EmEditor a number of years ago (2001 or 2002 I think), but stayed with EditPlus because I really needed Korean, and at the time EditPlus was better and easier -- EmEditor was the only other editor that actually worked properly for what I needed. EmEditor required a bit more effort and IIRC only had a single document per instance. It's improved massively since then though. I got to meet the author last year at SIC. :) Hmmm... Can't seem to find any pictures of us. Just this one.

+1 for Expresso -- it's an excellent utility. :)

Living Room / Re: Microsoft buying skype for US $8.5 Billion
« Last post by Renegade on May 18, 2011, 07:28 PM »
Common sentiment is that many Linux folk are planning a mass exodus, but so far the destinations are scattershot (typical of such as often fragmented community... *sigh*), with all alternatives being on average poorer than Skype's offerings.

Sigh... And while they're at it, why don't they go crucify that "traitor"  de Icaza...

If I could wave a magic wand and influence the right people, I'd make sure Microsoft opens the API enough to allow third party applications to hook into the network, as long as you are a registered user, of course.
Then, third party developers who are already developing VoIP and Video Chat clients (Ekiga, Qutecom, Linphone, etc...) could support the Skype protocol and relieve MS of the burden of developing a client.
Naturally, MS would probably steer users to signing up for a Live account or some such for access to it, which some may balk at, but hey "Ya pay's yer money, an' ya takes yer cherce".

I can totally see that happening. Maybe not immediately, but down the road, sure. However, it would be "platformized", just like other MS platforms.

Go with an editor like EditPlus because the syntax highlighting will help you learn much easier than editors with poor syntax highlighting. EditPlus is about the strongest in that area, and that's one of the primary reasons why I've been using it for almost 10 years now. EditPlus isn't free, but there are some free ones with good syntax highlighting as well. NotePad++ maybe?

For tutorials, try W3 Schools - http://www.w3schools.com/

They're pretty good.

I really do think that simply using an O'Reilly pocket book is about the fastest way to learn a language quickly, primarily because you can take it anywhere easily and read it where you'd otherwise be doing nothing. They're dense and easy to follow. There's no fluff in them -- it's all pure information. They're relatively cheap too.

I think I might have learned HTML with an OR pocket book... It's been so long that I don't really remember.

I remember I used to read 4 Guys from Rolla a fair bit: http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/ -- You might want to browse there a bit. They used to have good stuff. Not sure about now though.

This seems fairly slow paced, but ordered fairly well:

PayPal. Digital River. Commission Junction.

That about sums up all the options.

For a single price and 1 product, PayPal is good enough. For tracking software sales, DR. For affiliates, CJ.

There are other options of course, but they are ALL identical or very similar to one of those 3.

I'd say get an O'Reilly pocket book and just read through it. It's fairly short, and packed with good information. Since it's small, you take it with you and read anywhere -- public transportation, on the toilet... or are those the same thing? But I digress! :P

The number of tags isn't too high, so it's doable. By learning the tags, you will understand the tutorials.

Basically, knowing the tags is like knowing the tools. Tutorials will then show you how to USE the tools.

Start with a text editor like EditPlus or something. Start slow as well. Build simple documents then progress to learn about layout.

At the beginning, keep CSS in mind, but don't worry too much. Learn that later. Focus on structure to start. e.g. Keep inline elements inside of block level elements, etc.

There are a trillion tutorials out there, so just browse through 20 or so and find some tutorials that you find easy and fun to follow along with. The most important thing is that you find tutorials that fit YOUR style of learning, be that video or whatever.

Always try to remember that you are building a DOCUMENT of sorts. That document can host many things in it, but it is always a document. (HTML is a declarative language, unlike say XSLT which is a functional language.)

Learn JavaScript once you're comfortable with HTML.

A decent order of things to understand is:

HTML 4
CSS
JavaScript
XML
XHTML
HTML 5

You can skip XHTML, or learn that before XML, but it's good to know later on.

Don't get sidetracked with PHP or anything like that until you're comfortable with HTML. Don't let people pressure you, which many will try.

Have fun! :)

I have a very real problem with this:

All the measures of the law should protect property and punish plunder.

Law should protect PEOPLE. That attitude is the one that lets lawyers run rampant protecting "property" through silly patents and whatnot.

Quite true, but he covers that rather well earlier on. Including the lawyers part.
