Living Room / Re: Thoughts on switching to IPv6
« Last post by nosh on March 08, 2009, 04:17 PM »
I was getting some nasty freeze-ups in Firefox, the status bar showed "Looking up [site]" whenever it got stuck. I dumped OpenDNS and switched to Treewalk, just in case it was a DNS retrieval delay but it didn't help.

Someone in an old post on ubuntuforums had recommended turning IPv6 off in FF via network.dns.disableIPv6 and it seems to have sorted out the problem.

One particular bug that has appeared exists not in Mozilla, but in IPv6-capable DNS servers: an IPv4 address may be returned when an IPv6 address is requested. It is possible for Mozilla to recover from this misinformation, but a significant delay is introduced.

I get the message the flag-wavers are trying to send out but I find the pic slightly ironic. Both countries still retain antiquated British laws that make homosexuality illegal. They can be (technically, I've never heard of it actually happening) imprisoned in India and I'm sure things don't get much better in Pakistan where Islamic laws come into play. :)

Just discovered Readability [via DI], which is a bookmarklet generator - it lets you specify custom style, size and margin and generates a bookmarklet on the fly.

scancode's light bg bookmarklet is a keeper, too.

Edit: In 'Readability' the js and css is loaded from their site. Also, it fails to load the DC forum main page.   :-\

Love them both. You may want to watch this youtube clip. NSFW if you're offended by toilet humour.  :D

Here's the proof

Men? Ogling b00bies?? What? when? how?

Some of those are pretty funny! And my sensibilities have been _totally_ offended, especially by that Salma Hayek animation. Thank you.

Though not really needed in this case, I think a virtual machine is a must-have these days for numerous reasons, MS Virtual PC is free, fast and supports hardware virtualization.

General Software Discussion / Re: wanted: alternative to FastStone Image Viewer
« Last post by nosh on March 02, 2009, 02:04 AM »
OT WRT OP
I just compared IrfanView (v4.2), XnView and FastStone Image viewer (latest versions of both) with Compupic for speed. Compupic is shareware and has been abandoned for years but none of these can match it for speed, even now. :)

It might lack some feature or other, making it a no-go for a lot of people but I definitely recommend taking the trial for a spin once, even if it's just to use the awesome instant zoom (tap Z) feature.

The XnView Shell extension is a keeper, BTW.

Sadly, it was also the only DTS app that did a (somewhat) decent job of letting me search the FF cache. Everything else failed spectacularly. I un/installed it thrice yesterday before I quit in frustration. Now that I've had a night's sleep I've convinced myself to give it one last try and see if I can work around its idio(t)syncrasies, somebody shoot me!

General Software Discussion / Re: What is the currently best Desktop Search software?
« Last post by nosh on February 28, 2009, 12:08 PM »
When I ran Google Desktop Search it built a separate index folder that eventually grew to over 6 GB!! As it indexed it keeps adding to index but never deleted anything. I haven't run it for a couple of years so I don’t know if they have changed their policy of not removing deleted files from their index.

I installed GDS an hour back coz I'm looking for something to index my Firefox cache. It does have an option to remove deleted files from the index so index size going out of control shouldn't be a problem now.

I didn't like it though, for several reasons:
It's not very customizable.
It's one of those annoying apps that goes ahead and does what it pleases coz the users are idiots who don't know any better - despite my selecting to index only the browsing history I noticed it had gone ahead and indexed other stuff anyway.
It has one of the clunkiest, most fcuked up interface I've seen on any app... right from the unconventional installer, to the settings pages that open in a browser, to a mandatory widgets module being installed, to the main executable trying to call home _after_ I had uninstalled it, the whole GDS experience was really bizarre and infuriating!

oh nos! No way I'm clearing my FF cache, haven't done it since I upgraded to FF3. I find the inline history search really useful (47000+ entries and it's still very responsive :) )
A ctrl+F5 gets me the same result, FWIW. [search]

but Google remembers what you've searched for and what you've liked on the list, and will manipulate *your* search results based on that history.

So Google (US) believes I think Norah Jones sucks? If not, I don't get your meaning.

40Hz, I think that R.O expired a few weeks back. Trust Google to mess up!

General Software Discussion / Re: Password Protect File Or Folder?
« Last post by nosh on February 22, 2009, 01:41 PM »
Now that the OP's found his solution, a little digression can be forgiven...

My first impression of TrueCrypt which I've implemented recently on my system:

I finally forced myself to take the plunge after a long period of fear+hesitation. I formatted two 1TB (single partition) drives and hid both partitions using Partition Magic. Truecrypt detected both partitions and I created a normal TrueCrypt volume on each. Some of the programs store their data files on these drives, so I had to figure out Google a way to mount the drives before any regular programs started - a fitting solution was found here.

My system has been stable so far and it's a big relief to know that if a drive fails, I can give it for warranty-replacement  without having to worry about the company's tech-monkeys going through my data.

As far as performance is concerned, TrueCrypt isn't a total heavyweight but I wouldn't categorize it as a lightweight either. Copying large amounts of data across both TrueCrypted volumes, the CPU (2 x 3.16GHz) shows a load of of anything between 25-40%.

My overall experience with TC has been positive. The original intention was to lose the encryption after the drive warranty period expired since I'm not worried about theft or authorities, but it's completely non-intrusive and in actuality, I hardly notice the performance hit either. So unless TrueCrypt throws an ugly suprise in my face some time in the future, it's here to stay.

This has nothing to do with adjusting brightness/contrast, but an extension like NoSquint goes a long way in making web text easier to read.

Though I doubt the whole presentation was made on paper, I found it rather innovative/cute.
