DcUpdater / idea: Install program via downloading single .dcupdate
« Last post by justice on December 05, 2008, 06:41 AM »
Would it be interesting to download an run a .dcupdate file for a program which is not installed yet - which launches dcupdater and let dcupdater install the program?
That way you'd never have to point to the executable and the installation could be zero-click. That's pretty amazing.

I guess it would work without much extra development for programs that have an installer, and that .dcupdate files for zipped archives would be installed inside a MyDocuments\DcupdaterApps\<zipfilename> if a default path is not set within dcupdater (as its a portable app).

Imagine all coding snacks pointing to a dcupdate file, wow.

DcUpdater / Re: suggestion: web path changes
« Last post by justice on December 05, 2008, 06:38 AM »
If I understand what you mean is a permanent redirect in one removeversion.xml to another on a different url, for when you change hosts.
What you can do is point to an asp/php page in the .dcupdate that redirects transparently to the xml file, in a stable location like a dcmember page. Then you'd just have to change the redirect in the future. I guess you could host the xml file there too and avoid the work :P

Maybe an alternative implementation mouser could add a mirror system so that if the first url is unavailable a mirror can be used, this would then work with redirects as well. The problem is of course that the redirect is in the same spot as the version info, meaning if it's unavailable you cannot redirect anymore. And releasing a software update to update the dcupdate file is a bit pointless. hmm

I like how they grouped things together, maybe this can be used to differentiate between official DC programs and third party apps like codingsnacks, farr plugins etc.

there's only one dcupdate file per program:
2008-12-05_113520.png

I'm pretty sure I don't have symbolic links in my program files folder either, so I don't understand why it find two instances.. maybe dcupdater is saving settings in its program folder, which is not recommended under vista? I launch dcupdater via the start menu on its own and I used the latest version listed on the official dcupdater page - regular install with all options as they were presented.

I'm running vista with UAC off if that helps.

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera 10.0 Alpha 1
« Last post by justice on December 05, 2008, 05:22 AM »
Heres more detail ;)
Opera SoftwareChangelog for Opera 10.0 Alpha 1 for Windows
Changes Since Opera 9.62
Presto

Opera 10.0 includes the Presto 2.2 rendering engine. Detailed changes since Presto 2.1.1 are listed below:
Rendering

    * Significant performance improvements
    * Added Web font support, allowing the download of fonts specified in font descriptors in @font-face at-rules; TrueType (TTF), OpenType (OTF), and SVG fonts are supported (demos)
    * Achieved 100/100 and pixel-perfect rendering on the Acid3 test
    * Pretty-printing of unstyled XML (using unstyledxml.css in the Styles sub-directory of Opera's installation directory)
    * Added support for CSS3 RGBA color values (demo)
    * Added support for CSS3 HSLA color values (demo)
    * Added support for the CSS3 color: transparent value
    * Added support for the viewport meta tag key
    * Improved HTML5 support, including end-tag and start-tag parsing, whitespace parsing, and DOCTYPE parsing
    * CSS files must be served with the correct MIME type ("text/css") in Strict mode or they will be ignored

JavaScript/DOM

    * New regular expression engine, which greatly improves performance on regular-expression-heavy pages such as the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark
    * Added support for the W3C Selectors API
    * Renamed the objects returned by getClientRects() and getBoundingClientRect() to ClientRectList and ClientRect instead of TextRectangle and TextRectangleList, respectively
    * XMLHttpRequests will now trigger start-loading/end-loading events
    * Removed the proprietary window.setDocument method
    * Added support for the SVGElement.currentFps and SVGElement.targetFps properties to read and control, respectively, SVG frames per second
    * The load event for scripts is now sent after the script is executed rather than before
    * The load event is now sent to frame/iframe/object elements before it is sent to the document
    * A highlight will no longer be added when HTMLElement.focus() is called unless keyboard navigation is already activated

Other

    * Removed UTF-32 encoding support
    * User JS files will now be executed in alphabetical order rather than file system order
    * HTML5 canvas elements can now export images to the JPEG format
    * HTML5 canvas transforms are applied when building a path, not when painting it (this change is made to work like Mozilla)
    * The first ID (instead of the last) is now used on pages with duplicate IDs when navigating to fragment IDs
    * Added support for the altGlyph element in SVGs
    * Added support for 32-bit alpha in BMP and RLE-encoded BMP images
    * Implemented HTML5's algorithms for detecting charsets in HTML
    * The http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40 namespace is no longer treated as an alias to http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml

User Interface
Auto-Update

Opera now includes the ability to automatically update itself when new releases become available. By default, Opera 10.0 Alpha 1 will simply notify the user about available updates. Users can specify that snapshots should be downloaded by enabling Download All Snapshots in opera:config. Users can also choose not to check for updates or to automatically install updates by going to Preferences > Advanced > Security and changing the "Opera update level" setting.
Inline Spelling Checker

Spelling errors are now indicated as you type via a red underline in input fields, Opera Mail, and Notes. The input field context menu includes spelling suggestions, as well as the ability to enable/disable the spelling checker and change dictionary languages. Opera 10.0 Alpha 1 includes a U.S. English dictionary. Only multi-line edit fields check spelling automatically by default.

Opera 10.0 uses the Hunspell dictionary format. Installing dictionaries will become easier before Opera 10.0 is released, but additional dictionaries can be downloaded and installed now by copying the dictionary files (*.aff and *.dic) to the local dictionary directory. Opera will recognize the additional dictionaries after restarting. The dictionary directory locations for each platform are listed below:

    * Windows: $PROFILE\dictionaries\ (where $PROFILE is the 'Opera directory' in opera:about)
    * Linux/UNIX: $PROFILE/dictionaries/ (where $PROFILE is the 'Opera directory' in opera:about)
    * Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Opera 10/Dictionaries/

Mail/News
Rich Text Message Composition

Opera Mail can now send rich text messages including inline images, styled text, links, and/or custom HTML. Forwarding and redirecting rich text messages now also works as expected. Rich text composition can be enabled by default for an account on the Outgoing tab of the account settings dialog by checking "Prefer HTML formatting". It can also be enabled on a per message basis in the message composition window.

Bold styling, italic styling, and underline styling can be toggled using Ctrl-B, Ctrl-I, and Ctrl-U, respectively.

Rich text message signatures are not yet supported.
Delete After X Days (POP-only)

Delete after X days automatically removes messages from POP servers after the specified number of days, which is particularly useful for users who have limited server space. This option can be enabled for POP accounts on the Incoming tab of the account settings dialog by checking "Remove from server after #days" (7 days by default). It's also possible to specify that only read messages and/or only fully downloaded messages should be removed.

Warning: Disabling the latter option is dangerous for those that use low-bandwidth mode, as messages that aren't completely downloaded will be removed from the server, making it impossible to retrieve the complete message.
Other Changes

    * When viewing a message, message subjects are now a text field again instead of a button
    * Added a Thread button to the message list toolbar
    * Added keyboard shortcuts for Go to Thread (D), Watch Thread (Ctrl-D), and Ignore Thread (Ctrl-Shift-D)
    * The encoding mismatch dialog has been removed

Miscellaneous

    * Network access for widgets is now opt-in. Thus, all existing widgets must be updated in order to have network access. All widgets on widgets.opera.com have been given Internet access. Network access is specified using the network attribute of the widget element. For instance, widgets that use <widget network="private"> will have Intranet access only. Widgets that use <widget network="private public"> will have Intranet and Internet access.
    * Dragonfly now selects the current tab automatically
    * Dragonfly now includes an HTTP inspector
    * Added support for TLS 1.2
    * SSL v2 and weak cipher support have been completely removed
    * Fixed numerous stability issues
    * Plugged numerous memory leaks

DcUpdater / bug: all updates shown twice, any idea?
« Last post by justice on December 05, 2008, 05:18 AM »
Every program is listed twice in dcupdater, any idea how this happened? I tried to uninstall it and reinstall. there's only one .dcupdate file per program. Running vista 32. Screenshots enclosed.

DcUpdater / Re: DcUpdater Feature Requests
« Last post by justice on December 05, 2008, 05:11 AM »
* I'd like to see an application that I registered to come up in the main list of programs that you see when dcupdate runs. I'd like to keep seeing donationcoder programs highlighted as that's the primary reason behind the program but to not show up in the list at all is a missed opportunity.
* Dcuhelper should be associated with .dcupdate files when it runs instead of the main program. This way even if dcupdater is not installed the dcupdate file can still be ran and the user asked to install the program. It seems that when a .dcupdate file is installed then dcuhelper is more likely to be installed than dcupdater itself.

I was just going to answer this with a 'thanks it needs a bit of cleaning up the message was left in unintentionally' but with the list of known issues I think it's better to take the application offline just now until a more developed version is ready. If you want to test it and give feedback in the meantime just ask and i'll send you a link.

Description
JustCloseSomeTasks is an utility to let you easily close inactive tasks. It saves taskbar space by offering you to close the stuff you've not used for a while. Tasks are automatically marked for closing when they're not used for a certain time period (expiry time). The program will learn your behaviour and adjust this expiry time.

I use a lot of programs, and many at the same time. Because of this when a lot of windows are open the taskbar becomes cluttered  and I lose the overview required. JustCloseSomeTasks knows which programs I've not used and helps me manage.

Usage
Installation
Portable installation, DcUpdater support via help menu

Using the Application
Press the hotkey button (Ctrl-[ by default - change via system tray -> preferences) and all windows are listed with the ones older than 120 seconds checked. press the close button to close these tasks. The program will learn and adjust the auto-marking period based on your usage.

Known Issues
* If installing under windows vista to the Program Files folder, please be aware that the program might not be able to read it settings file. Run it once as an administrator to have the settings.ini created.
* Applications that don't communicate their window title or ID are hidden from the list for safety reasons. If you know any please let me know as I'd like to add support for the most vocal missing ones.

Go to options -> Hotkeys
Edit or create a new hotkey and add fc followed by a space the following into the 'Text for search edit box', you can then launch FARR with FC already typed in.

There's a plugin Fcalc that you can install to do this, you'd type
fc 5+10 and press enter.

Easiest way to get this is to install this plugin and all other ones via DcUpdater if you have that installed. it will list them in the second tab.

Thanks peeps :)
Well most applications keep either a set of registry keys or a list somewhere of the recent files that you see at the bottom of the file menu after opening the application that's the files I'm talking about with that feature.

There's a farr plugin thread that lists a lot of these locations.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Intro
« Last post by justice on November 28, 2008, 03:38 AM »
I was wondering if it would be worth starting a thread to call forward testers for prereleases. With NANY because you have to present a new app in a small timeframe, sometimes getting around to testing things is harder. Authors could post the idea of their projects, people willing to test the prereleases could get in touch and the rest could go via private IMs. Any point to doing this centrally to improve NANY apps?

I assume it's because they have to process it in someway to make it work with amazon s3, but I mean that's not our problem really, and I guess it's why they sell it with more features like webbased access to your files, which should also have been included imho. Go dropbox.

Although in reality when you need it the Plus service will not be a significant cost rise (I assume you'll spend about $5-10 a month by that time), and it's a flat fee (it doesn't rise the more you use it like regular JD costs).
774
It delta syncs but only if you pay the 1 dollar a month for the extra plus service.
Optional Jungle Disk Plus Service
Jungle Disk Plus is an optional service that provides additional features beyond what comes with Amazon S3.

    * Block-level file updates, allowing you to upload only the changed portions of large files

« Last post by justice on November 27, 2008, 03:40 AM »
Interesting post 40hz!
When you think about which web services are you paying for now and how many can you do without? The answer for most (and me) will be: none and all (if there was any). The don't know how they could convince me of paying for something I don't have (my data in a reusable format), and this topic is evidence of trying to convert me to the second part (via lock in).

Seems like the only way to make money on this is a free version for the individual and a commercial one for organisations, for which ownership of their data is even more important.
