DC Website Help and Extras / DC website is "Not Secure" when viewing threads?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 03, 2020, 01:21 PM »
I've noticed lately that Brave (Chrome) is telling me the site is "Not Secure" when I'm viewing any posts/threads on the site.

DonationCoder - Not Secure.png

It seems that maybe some content is being loaded without HTTPS on thread pages?

EDIT: I'm mentioning this more in response to mouser's recent-ish attempts to force HTTPS site-wide than an actual concern about the "security" of my connection/data on the site.

Perhaps you could make symlinks or junctions into your Google Drive or OneDrive folders for automatic cloud sync. It may not work. I tried something similar with Dropbox many years ago when it was still fairly new and it didn't work as expected. But maybe things have changed or improved since then.

Wow. I got Bloons TD5 from a Humble Bundle years ago but never really got into it. Though I do remember playing some of the earlier Bloons Flash games. But I haven't really kept up with the series since. It looks like the developers have been busy.

Bloons TD5 is $1 with $13 of DLC (skins that don't affect gameplay).
Bloons TD6 is $1 with $29 of IAP (boosts that make the game faster/easier, i.e. Pay-to-Win).

There are also three Free-to-Play (aka Pay-to-Win) Bloons games on Steam: Bloons Monkey City, Bloons TD Battles, and Bloons Adventure Time TD.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: [Game] Legend Of Zelda - Breath Of The Wild
« Last post by Deozaan on June 25, 2020, 02:47 AM »
I just came across and watched this nearly 2 hour review of Breath of the Wild by Joseph Anderson. I think it does a great job of explaining the strengths of BotW that I loved, and also of detailing the many weaknesses that caused me to feel dissatisfied with it as a Zelda game. Though I don't agree with--or at least don't feel as strongly as he did about--every one of his complaints, I think he hit every major point that I would have made if I were to go into more detail than I did in this thread about my thoughts and feelings on the game and its mechanics.

I think I'm going to check out more of his content soon.

Along with Designer (now @ full price of 55€) you get "Fine Liner Brushes by The Artifex Forge --
over 50 vector Fine Liner brushes, plus 10 Fine Liner textures."

Where can I find more information about this? Is it for new purchases only? Or is this free for anyone who owns Designer (even if purchased years ago)?

New e-reader Paper display with fast refresh?

https://liliputing.c...an-e-ink-screen.html

Or not?

Update: An earlier version of this article referred to the Hisense Q5 as a tablet with an E Ink display, but it appears this tablet’s grayscale display may actually be a reflective LCD screen. This could give it a faster screen refresh rate while still enabling high outdoor visibility without a backlight. But it may not feature the high contract and lower power consumption associated with E Ink displays.

After further research, my understanding is that it was an intentional feature, but possibly with unintended consequences due to still thinking from a Firefox mindset where the address bar and the search bar are (or were?) two separate things. That is, they think it's OK to suggest/change things that are search queries, but since Chrome-based browsers have a single omnibar, this thinking came back to bite them and resulted in typed-in URLs getting changed. They don't think it's OK to change typed-in URLs and are fixing that.
762
And one more, for completeness:

Here's what happens when I try to search from the address bar for "bitcoin"

Brave Bitcoin Search Autocomplete.png

If I press enter, I am taken to a DuckDuckGo search page, which doesn't link to Binance on the first page of results. If I instead search for "bitcoin binance" the top result is Binance with several links to various Binance pages, none of which include the referral ID.

I get similar results with other crypto-related terms, such as "ltc" or "litecoin" in the address bar.

So again, there is no link hijacking going on. It seems like the only way to accidentally use a referral link is if you type the full URL in the address bar and have never been to the website before, and press enter without looking at the auto-complete. In other words, it seems the only people who are likely to accidentally use the referral links are the small percentage of people who already know exactly what they're looking for (and would therefore type in the full URL manually, rather than doing a search and clicking a search result) but don't already have that site in their browsing history.

And even though I can't tell if it was an unintentional bug or just a bad decision, they've admitted that revising typed-in domains was a mistake that will not happen in the future even with the feature enabled.

"We will never revise typed in domains again, I promise" - Brendan Eich

The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes

This seems a bit misleading.

It doesn't hijack links. It suggests links with Brave's refID in the auto-complete for the address bar. So if you click a link, or type a URL into the address bar, it either takes you exactly where you think you're going, or shows you in the auto-complete where it will be taking you if you press enter.

Here's what happens when I start to type in coinbase.com (which I have been to previously):

Brave RefID.png

Notice that the auto-complete suggestion gives preference to URLs I have visited in the past, listing the "suggested" referral URL below my actual history. If I press enter, it takes me directly to coinbase.com with no referral. I have to manually select the bottom suggestion which contains the referral code in order to be taken to the referral link.

And here is what happens when I start to type in binance.com (which I have not been to previously):

Brave Binance AutoComplete - Search.png

Because I haven't typed out the full URL it will do a search for the site if I press enter. If I click the top result, it takes me to the site with no referral ID. No links have been hijacked or modified.

Here is what happens when I type in the full binance.com URL (which I still have not been to previously at the time of testing this):

Brave Binance Autocomplete RefID.png

It shows me that it will autocomplete with a referral ID if I press enter. Or I can select the non-referral link and then every time in the future when I type out the URL it will give preference to URLs in my history over its own suggestions. Or in other words, it will be like my Coinbase example above.

Sounds like making a mountain out of a molehill to me.

Either way, these "autocomplete suggestions" can be disabled from Settings -> Appearance -> Show Brave suggested sites in autocomplete suggestions. And in response to the negative feedback, it will be disabled by default in future releases.

So what you're saying is that even though you're posting to a discussion forum, you don't want there to be any discussion?

This is annoying, but the book is always going to be behind the software ("Documentation - the worst part of programming").  The books seem to me very expensive.  If they want people to use, and evangelise for, the software, maybe Serif should make the books freely available as a PDF or something.  They would be easier to keep up to date in a purely electronic format.

Agreed. The book is fairly spendy, plus you have to pay extra for shipping since it's a big hardcover book. I think I asked on Twitter if the book came in digital format so I could avoid the (relatively small) extra cost of shipping. And I also hoped that maybe, as you suggested, it would be more likely to be or kept up to date. They told me they only sold it in dead-tree format. :(

I bought it, on sale, but of course the shipping costs weren't discounted, which brought the total cost back up closer to the non-sale price.
767
I've just never used those strokes

I probably wouldn't have either, but the book told me about them so I decided to try them out.  ;D

And actually I just opened it up and see that it's on v1.8.x now (I had problems previously with versions 1.7.x and 1.6.x). It seems a lot better in this version. It still gets a little sluggish as I continue to draw a curve, but if I draw for about 10 seconds it takes maybe only an additional 5-10 seconds to finish rendering, as opposed to the 4 minutes it used to.
768
Thanks for posting about these deals. The Affinity suite of tools looks like very nice software. I wouldn't blame anyone for being tempted to buy.

My tl;dr warning is: Definitely make use of the 90-day trial before you buy, as you may be unhappy with the results.

I bought Affinity Designer in 2018 because, while I'm not an artist, I do occasionally need to make or manipulate an image here and there, and it seemed like really capable software and it was on sale.

So I bought it and played around with it for a bit, noticed some bugs and issues, including a serious performance issue. Then I posted on their forums to report the bugs or otherwise get support, and. . . nothing. No response to my post about terrible performance. But I was busy in my life with other things and wasn't ready to dive into seriously using Affinity Designer yet, so I kind of forgot about it. Then, about a year later, during another one of their sales, I bought the Affinity Designer Workbook. When it arrived, I opened it up and started reading through it so I could learn how to use the software. A within the first ~15 pages or so, still within the introductory chapter which explains the UI and basic tools, I noticed a few discrepancies between what the book showed me and what the software showed me. There was one button/tool I couldn't even find. But otherwise, as it explained each tool, I spent a couple minutes playing with it in the software to get a feel for how it worked and what it was for.

And that's when I ran into the big issue. One of the tools, the Vector Brush Tool, slowed my computer down to a near standstill when I used it. I actually recorded a video of it where I spent ~10 seconds drawing a single curve and it took ~4 minutes for it to actually render what I drew.

Now, to be fair, this video recording shows it as being worse than it actually was. Because Affinity Designer used up all my CPU, my video recording software ran even slower, so it actually looked smoother on my machine than it looks in the video. But the important part is that it still took the same amount of time even when I wasn't recording.

One of their big and prominent claims is how butter smooth the software is and how it is always so responsive. So once again I went to their forums to try to get some support because either they were lying about how responsive their software is, or there was something wrong on my end that needed troubleshooting. And once again, there was no response to my post. Finally I complained loudly on Twitter and that got their attention. I got a response on a Friday and I was busy that weekend so I didn't get back to them until Monday. They asked for more information from me and had a couple suggestions I could try. We sent a couple messages back and forth over a couple of days and then they went back to radio silence.

After about another two weeks I complained loudly on Twitter again which prompted them to respond to the thread once more, but with a very unhelpful "there's nothing we can do." A little bit later, a different person from Serif asked me to try it out on another machine and see if anything changed, and asked for a video if I could record one. So I obliged and recorded my testing on another machine and posted the results to the forum thread. Can you guess what happened next? If you guessed "nothing" or "radio silence" you are correct!

So the software may or may not work well for you, depending on who-knows-what. The Workbook was outdated and/or incorrect the moment it arrived, and had printing blemishes (ink smudges or whatever) in it as well. And it's nearly impossible to get anyone from the company to respond to you when you try to get support.

Buyer beware.

Panzer, please stop joining threads and just posting lists of links. Nobody wants to see that, and as stated previously, it doesn't actually contribute to the discussion.

At a minimum, include a useful description about what you're linking to. You should also include a sentence or two about why you like it, or recommend it, etc. Basically, you should tell us why you're linking to it and give us enough context/information to know whether or not we're interested enough in it to click the link. And to make an even better impression, you can include a screenshot or video of what you're linking to, if appropriate.
770
And the sad thing is, any company who tries to build a sustainable business model can't get a foot in the door because the customers will just say (for example), "why would I pay $24 for that pizza from you when I can get it for $16 from another company [which won't be around in a few years because they're not sustainable]?"

So in the end, neither model is sustainable in practice.

I don't speak French, so I don't understand most of this, but someone recorded their experience playing the game my team made.

Turn subtitles on in cog then go back in them and you can hit auto translate the auto generated french ones to english.

Congrats as well.

Thanks! I'm not sure how accurate the translation was, but it was nice to get an idea of what he was saying as he played it.

The results are in!

Defendeer ranked surprisingly well this time, ranging from 5th to just under 500th in the various categories, and 28th overall.
