General Software Discussion / Re: Firemin: reduce FF memory usage
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 29, 2016, 09:40 AM »
I have ~ 15 tabs open all day which I irregularly check, plus my daily "these 20 sites without a good RSS feed and/or without an easy way to make one (cough, cough) might have new, interesting contents" routine. Am I really a rare species?

The difference in my case may be that some people use the browser to actually do work.  For the most part I surf and do a few regular forums.  I do not keep up on the cutting edge to put it mildly.  :)

I am approaching the climax of yet another Jack Vance SciFi novel:

This one is a lot of fun.  The protagonist is from an elite family.  But the dominant elites in the culture look down on those from his country or province or whatever it is, no matter how elite the individual.  The same person paradoxically alternately insists on the privileges due his caste and complains about the lack of egalitarianism in the society.

At the same time he has an obstinate personality that is somehow ingratiating.  A fun read to pass the time.  I wish I was set up to be able to look up words in the dictionary as I come upon them in the Vance books.  I thought William F. Buckley had vocabulary.  Perhaps Buckley has greater command of terms that express philosophical abstractions.  But Vance has mastery when it comes to describing particular things that may be common place or unique to a region or planet.

I already have my next Vance novel on hold request.  I guess I like to reserve Jack Vance in adVance.  :)

The citizens under his control wear a "torc" which is an explosive necklace [...] I seem to remember some SciFi movie or series that used the idea.  But I cannot recall the name.
Probably the Saga of the Exiles by Julian May.

There's also a "faceless man" in Ben Aaronovich's "Peter Grant" series, but he's attempting to become an evil overlord.

I can recommend this trilogy.  For one thing The Faceless Man aspect does not occupy the entire story.  I won't go into detail so as not to spoil things.  Suffice it to say the plot is not one dimensional.

I took a quick look through the source code.  The main program is written in AutoIt3 and it does in fact periodically call EmptyWorkingSet() API.  If you have the same set of tabs open all the time you could accomplish the same thing restarting FF manually when no operations are pending.  It would just come up to the same set of open tabs.

I can see it if the FF browser is going to be open on a server for months and the guy with the server wants to totally automate accounting for the memory leaks.  Some of those guys don't reboot a server for months or even years.  Which I guess is why the fellow wrote it in the first place.

Myself I tend to close browsers when done with them.  The only time I have 8+ tabs open is once a day when I check the giveaway sites.  The rest of the time I rarely run more than 4 tabs.
755
was that a question?

I guess I have to admit it is a rhetorical question.  It just strikes me funny how many of these "check for updates" do not work.  SlimJet portable it worked automatically fine on version 9.x up until the last 9.x release.  It has not worked since.  Likewise often the Firefox check for updates, especially if the update is only an x.01, tells me I have the latest version when I don't.

Go figure.  :)

or https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

Assuming the time stamp is adjusted for my time zone the time of the folder creation for 47.0.1 is after the release notification on Softpedia.  Also the "check for updates" as I mentioned came up blank even though the installer was in the wild.  So why would I check those places when Softpedia tells me first?
757
I just checked for updates in FF 47.0 and it says I have the latest version.  But yet again the installer is available from Softpedia:

http://www.softpedia...-Firefox-Final.shtml

Although the changelog entry is still for 47.0.  But anyway, Softpedia seems to have an "in" somewhere so I may as well put it on.  Mostly I use SlimJet but there are a few things that work better in FF still.

Edit:  Tricky tricky.  Once installed it opens the first time to Mozilla page and clicking What's New gets an up to date changelog:

General Software Discussion / FolderSave v. 1.0.0.8
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 24, 2016, 07:40 AM »
On another forum a poster without a UPS wondered if there was a way to overcome that fact that when he got a power glitch, the folders he had open on the desktop were not saved for next boot.  He has the folder options set to restore open folders on startup.

It seemed like something not difficult to hack so I wrote a small utility called FolderSave that sits in the tray.  When run with /auto command line param, it opens the saved folder set(if any) and positions and sizes the folder windows where they were when saved.  Every 30 seconds it saves the folder set if there are any Explorer Folder Windows open.

It has only been tested on single monitor Windows English language version of Windows 8.0.  But it is pretty basic and so should work as expected on most systems XP and later.  It writes a text file to the same folder as the FolderSave.exe.  For this reason it is a good idea not to have the exe file underneath Program Files or Program Files (x86) to avoid UAC and/or access denied crapola.

It is just a hack but if you regularly use the same set of folders positioned and sized just so then it may save you time and/or avoid running a template type utility if the only reason to do so is to set up the folder pattern.

You may download from my page here:
MilesAhead Software for Windows PCs

Please see the included Readme.txt file for requirements and more info.

Edit: source is included so you may change the hotkey or comment out the playing of the chime when the folders are saved etc..

To compile use the latest version of AutoHotkey
I used the 32 bit Unicode flavor to compile the exe.  A custom icon is also included.

+1 on CCleaner.  I use it daily after each session.  Sometimes though, a more aggressive registry cleaning is necessary and suites provide that along with reg defrag.
-Midnight Rambler (June 23, 2016, 09:19 AM)

I should have stayed with the free version.  Now that they have me in the database I'll never be able to run it without the BS.  In any case the free Wise disk and registry cleaner stand-alone versions seem pretty good.  When the suite runs in the tray it is doing other stuff.  I could probably turn the stuff off but I hate to spend two hours reading exactly what it is doing just to disable it.  Much better to run and be done with each utility.

The old guy looked at him, smiled, and said: “who listens?”

I expected the punch line to be the older shrink taking out his hearing aid control, turning up the gain and asking "what was that?"  :)

No nag screen on 4.17 PRO windowsdeal.com version.  In fact, I don't recall any registration problems and/or nag issues with windowsdeal software compared with GiveAwayOfTheDay software.
-Midnight Rambler (June 22, 2016, 11:01 AM)

I am thinking I may be better off with just 2 of their utilities.  The free portable versions of the registry and disk cleaner.  I probably don't need either as long as CCleaner is working correctly.  But when I bring up Wise Care 365 to the tray, stuff is running that i don't really care about(pun intended.) And how often am I going to defrag the Registry?  Once a year?  If I skipped it entirely I doubt if I could detect the difference.  Maybe the first boot after a defrag is a tad smoother.  Then it is right back to the usual sloppy booting.

I don't mind if they just put a splash screen up and ask if I want to revert to Free or upgrade to Pro for another cycle.  As long as when I choose free they stop nagging me.  But noooooooooooooo!!!  :)

They cheat:

Heh.  It was cute.  But not as cool as the one where you throw the ball and the dog chases it.

For some reason I can let this track repeat for hours.  It is Magic like The Harder They Come.

Hmm, now that the giveaway license is running out I am getting a really annoying nag screen.  Here is the thing though.  I uninstalled Wise Care 365 Pro.  Cleaned the registry.  Downloaded Wise Care 365 Free.  When I run it I get the same Pro nag screen.  So there is no good way to revert to the Free Portable version.

I took everything off and download Free Wise Registry Cleaner Portable.  So far it hasn't nagged me.  I guess I don't really need this with CCleaner anyway.  The registry cleaner function has better eye candy than CCleaner.  That's likely the real reason I used it.  I never used any of the resident functions.

Edit: It looks like the Free Registry Cleaner does the same stuff as the Pro. It just looks drab doing it.

Perhaps you could help me to download it?  I am not big on social media.  I have a Facebook account mainly to avoid registering to log in one time.  I pressed the two Facebook buttons to "unlock the page" and nothing discernible happens.  Most of these giveaway sites have a bail out button where the link will be sent to you via email.

Edit: Never mind.  I just waited for the time out.

it's tempting to have a dig at MS there. Although my problem is mainly with this very persistent adware on Windows 7 that's trying to get me to update to 10 . . .

I guess it depends on whose crap is being flushed!!

Hmmm, whatever happened to good old vaporware?  It didn't cost anything or take up any storage.  And it never crashed!!

Running man, Wedlock?

I remember seeing Wedlock.  It made me think of The Defiant Ones.  But I think the explosive necklace gimmick has been used in a few SciFi flicks.  I need to take NZT or something.  My memory is cloudy lately.  :)

Made a note of that one, MilesAhead

Evidently the stories of Jack Vance captured Paul Allen's imagination.  On the Jack Vance web site it is noted that Allen set up a fund for university libraries to apply for free VIE sets.  http://jackvance.com/home/

Now I just have to google what a VIE set is.  :)

Yet another by Jack Vance.

The Faceless Man is the supreme ruler.  The citizens under his control wear a "torc" which is an explosive necklace The Faceless Man and certain of his subordinates may trigger remotely to "take the head" of malcontents or lawbreakers.  I seem to remember some SciFi movie or series that used the idea.  But I cannot recall the name.

The Faceless Man was originally titled The Anome and is the first of the Durdane Series

I am about 100 pages in.  So far it is great fun.

'm personally afraid of the urban dictionary after a few encounters.  Things I never wanted to know, and hope were jokes.

I don't know if this definition was a joke.  But it was bizarre enough to make me laugh.  While I was there I also found out a "corn flake" is a synonym for cracka' or redneck.  I wonder what it means if they call you a corn check?  A Central European Cracka' maybe?

I got it just from context.  It just seemed cool

I tried looking it up in the Urban Dictionary. There are some alternative definitions there that may generate a laugh or two.  One in particular I don't even want to paraphrase here.  Let's just say I laughed out loud even though I am sitting in a library(shhhh!)  :)

I gave up on Alastor.  The font was just too hard on the eyes.  I switched to the Jack Vance novel

I finished it just now.  The Gray Prince is the leader of a movement to recover the land grabbed by human "Land Barons" from indigenous tribes, of which the Gray Prince is a member.  I won't give anymore detail as it is a short novel so why not just read it to find out for yourself?
