PublicDomainVic / Re: nkTree - GUI for actions on a directory tree (v0.1.0)
« Last post by nkormanik on December 29, 2021, 05:05 PM »
Small additional request, Vic....

Not a priority.  But if it's easy enough to incorporate.

Would be nice to have nkTree in the SendTo list.  So, if user focuses on a certain folder/directory in Windows Explorer, user can right-click to bring up context menu, SendTo, and nkTree.  When nkTree comes up, the focused-on folder appears in the nkTree Directory window automatically.

Thanks for an excellent utility, Vic!

Happy New Year!!

Excellent program, Vic!  Works tremendously well.  Easy to eliminate folders by name in large folder/file hierarchy.

Everyone on the planet really ought to keep this gem handy.

Vic! has been achieving high quality accomplishments!  And he's just getting warmed up!

Recently flattened a rather large hierarchy of files using Vic's program here.

Over 48,000 files.

Flatten did the job wonderfully!

Post New Requests Here / Delete specific folders in a directory hierarchy tree
« Last post by nkormanik on November 23, 2021, 12:09 AM »
I've been searching for hours for an answer.  Such a simple thing.  Huge jumble of partial answers....

Given:  Large directory tree structure, folders with files, maybe some empty folders.

Challenge:  Move recursively throughout tree.  Delete all folders in entire tree that has in name "xyz".

There might be one such folder.  There might be one hundred.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Nicholas Kormanik

(thanks @publicdomain, and others, for much help on many challenges)

One possible enhancement request, Vic!:

If a directory tree to be flattened has a branch that exceeds 260 characters, Flatten falters.  A polite message is popped onscreen to that effect.

Then I have to try to shorten said path, and/or filename.  If user does that, Flatten fulfills flawlessly.

By the way, I've set my 'registry' to overlook long path/filenames.

Flatten still chokes... at least in perhaps a pre-do check... on long path+filename.

So, the request is, any other workaround besides manually trimming the troublemakers?

Thanks again!!

This is golden, Vic!  I've used it now many times.  Super fast.  Feedback when finished.

Used another, more kludgy, method for years.  And your solution is vastly better.

Hope lots of people out there somehow come to learn of your gem.

Thanks!!

Victor, three questions:

1.  How does Flatten Folder deal with same-name files?

2.  What is the upper limit number of files that can be processed that have the same name?

3.  What is the upper limit number of total files that can be processed?

Thanks!

Good news, then, Vic.  Perhaps put a link here to pdGet?

Thanks!

Vic, still often getting same error as mentioned back a few months:

Hope you might be able to figure out the reason.  Seems to be timing.  Maybe due to Edge browser.  Who knows.

Thanks!

Now Vic is up to 0.4.0 on this project.  Has been working really well for me.

I've accumulated over a thousand URLs linking to ebooks I want to download.  URLister brings 'em up one at a time.  I've set up a macro to do the downloading.  After download, macro goes back to URLister for the next.

Thanks Vic!

Vic, most important change needed at this point is to disable the global hotkeys.

Those hotkeys interfere with other programs.

Thanks!

Ath, no problem here exactly.  But appreciate the suggestion.

I do try to keep drivers updated.

URLister is a good program.  So glad to have found a substitute for Flem.  And super glad URLister remembers (so far) where exactly it left off, so that I can easily return to visiting a very long list of URLs.

On a UHD monitor, URLister on left half of screen, browser (Edge) on right half, both stay open.  I close tabs as needed, after a number of URLs have been opened, via URLister.

Vic, occasionally when clicking to go to next URL, I'm getting the error message below.  Using Edge, by the way.

Yes, latest beta.  No luck.

Wonder what it could be.

Your other program, Automatic Screenshotter, takes full desktop/workstation pics.

I've looked and looked through settings, and think all the settings are fine.

Still the same here.  Only upper-left portion of screen gets captured.

Maybe my settings/preferences are wrong??

Thanks.

Latest beta version still only capturing north-west section of UHD screen....

I like that URLister maintains the state where you have left off....

I'm downloading files...  Long list...  Didn't get done, of course...  So, close URLister, wherever I happen to be in the list.  Go away, go to bed.  Come back.  Open URLister.  Pick up right where I left off.

Hope that stays in the program.

Coming along nicely, Vic.  Glad to see you are still working on URLister.

Possible enhancements, but not absolutely necessary:

1)  Appears to be a 'GLOBAL' macro' built into URLister, affecting certain keys (shift-a, for instance).  If so, that should be documented within the program.  With ability to shut off.  And, perhaps, reconfigure.

2)  Allow dragging a FOLDER of shortcuts/desktop links in.  Default is to include just the shortcuts in the top level of the dragged-dropped folder.  But, perhaps offer option to recursively find all shortcuts within the entire folder hierarchy.

3)  Add to CONTEXT MENU in main screen (where URLs are), "Save As...", to a text file, entire list of URLs loaded.  With some default subdirectory where .txt file will be saved.  (Default could even simply be to program directory where Urlister.exe file resides.)

As discussed before, I would use a macro program to run URLister.  Macro would be set up to:

-- click to next URL
-- close open browser tabs, other than current tab (the one just opened)
-- position mouse cursor optimally for next step of process

Thus, in my case, no worries that so many tabs get opened.  They will be gone with each iteration of URL opening.

But, others will complain.  New tab, new tab, new tab....  yikes.

Bottom line at this point, I feel URLister is an improvement over 'Flem', my present URL list opener (Waterfox extension, now discontinued).

Well, keep up the fine work!!

Nicholas

I'm a RightNote huge fan.  All around excellent snippets-capture program.  And the standout capture mechanism -- for me, the tilda key on the keyboard.  While researching, highlight section, then tilda key.  Saved.

Two concerns, however.  Hopefully these will be remedied:

1) As I am collecting and saving, via RightNote, a lot of info that I want to later have access to, the content MUST be readily accessible, even indexable.

2) Would be nice to use some bolding (formatting) on various text sections I've saved.  Don't think that's there presently.

I'm presently using only one monitor with my main computer.  UHD.  Windows increases zoom to 125%.  Always capture whole monitor.  (Easier to edit down the capture as wanted with another edit program.)

Interestingly another of mouser's programs "Automatic Screenshotter" works perfectly.  Terrific program.  Takes a pic of entire monitor every so many minutes (seconds, etc.).  Captures are named according to YOUR preferences.  (As with Screenshot Captor.)  That alone is a huge advantage over those capture programs that don't let YOU choose the filenames.

Tried as many different settings as I could think of in Preferences.

No matter what, only Upper-Left portion of screen gets captured.  Around 70% of the entire screen.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
