the writer's english usage is charming. and some of his arguments are debatable. but it was still a nicely done article. with luck it might encourage people to actually try linux and form their own opinion rather than rely on the opinions of others.

so read this article along with the comments above.  

then go boot a live cd and see for youself if you haven't already.

linux is far from perfect. but there's still a lot to like. :-)

i had the same experience. 

but this leads me to believe suspect micosoft actually installs the full 'ultimate edition' on every machine and then enables different feature sets based on the license key you enter.

so to me it seems it's more like unlocking the software rather than upgrading it in the traditional sense.

and haven't games and trialware already been doing that for many years? :-))

i'll second...or third the recommendations for unison. i use it at work and at home. it just works. which is exactly what you want a file synchronization utility to do.

stopped at borders on my break yesterday. I found a copy of avalon for only $12.99 so i bought it and watched it last night. wow! most excellent movie. much better than the matrix. definitely the best cyber oriented sf movie I have seen so far. i'll likely watch it again this weekend with friends.

really liked the lead. she gets crabby just like me!

i'm very surprised this movie isn't better known.

i currently use office 2010. before that I used 2007. and before that it was 2003.

2010 is very powerful and comprehensive. but it also has 50 times more capabilities than i'll ever want or need. and i'm a fairly sophisticated user.

i feel Word plateaued with office 2000. everything that came after that was bloat. unless it fixed something that didn't work as advertised. mail merge was something that didn't work correctly in 2000.

so...what would i be buying it for if i had to pay out of my own purse?

the answer so far is >> i wouldn't.

women often think along similiar lines. but just not as often or exclusively as most men seem to.

hi! yes i'm in the usa.

we have two nights a week where our gym area is gender specified. it was voted on and passed by something like 90% of the women and better than 70% of the men. from this i would surmise that the majority of our members wanted one night a week where there wasn't the distraction of having the opposite sex around even though the club composition is three quarters single.

weird huh?

now how about someone passing me a club burka so I can go exercise.
   

the rest of the club is open for everybody seven days a week.

Needless to say, I used to think Sharon Stone was HELLA HOT in that movie...working out in her leotard.  Man, i thought that was the hottest thing I had seen at the time.

what is it about leotards that they have that effect on most guys? i can understand how it would if someone like sharon stone were wearing one. especially if it's one of those suspenders & tubetop combos like she's got on! but i've seen guys go almost as nuts when the body wearing the leotard wasn't exactly up for the challenge.

i only ask because it's reached the point  where they've considered asking the members to refrain from wearing them on 'mixed' gym nights at the athletic club i belong to.

very true.

my company requires college degrees for 95% of all our job openings. it's purely an elimination requirement. having a degree is no guarantee you'll be hired. but you won't get interviewed by us without one.

we do have a very small number of positions that don't require a college degree. none of them are very good or well paid jobs.  

and my company is not alone in operating this way.

by all means get educated. but also do your best to get a degree if possible. simple truth? sooner or later you'll need to get one.

Developer's Corner / Recommend a general purpose IDE

i keep getting dragged into more and more coding projects where I work.

i'm proficient in python, and can do basic C++ and hold my own in most projects where PHP is involved.

up until now i've used whatever editor/IDE came with the package i was using. but now that it looks like i'm going to be doing more of this than i want to i'm in the market for a more general purpose tool.

what i'd like is something that can handle c++, php, python, and probably java with equal aplomb. I don't need extensive project management or version control features since most of what i get asked to do are simple ~ 100-line sysop utility programs and add-ons. folding is important to me because i often work on a small screen laptop. and multiplatform would be a major plus since i work on BSD and Windows workstations. having the same tool on both environments would simplify my life greatly.

i tried Eclipse but didn't really care for it. it seems to make everything more complicated than it needs to be. i'm not stupid. and i'm always willing to put the time into learning something useful. but using Eclipse almost feels like a job in itself. 

some people recommended i try NetBeans, which i haven't yet.

does anyone have some favorite ide they'd like to suggest?

why would Apple need to borrow money from anybody? its cultlike customers seem willing to reach for their plastic everytime Apple releases another one of its expensive toys.
