So I thought, maybe the guys at Altaro clever enough to put the erased files to the recycle bin. Nope. They were just wrote over.

Tough one :(
I had a similar experience with FileHamster - I was pruning the backups manually and happened to delete one that I needed about 1/2 an hour later. Likewise they hadn't used the recycle bin - they do now though ;-)

I've downloaded some SVG maps from wikipedia - cant remember what I searched for but I suspect they'd be there for the individual States.

PS Skwires suggestion is more or less the same as mine - I dont think you'll get anything less complicated, in fact I dont think it is complicated at all - just something new for you to learn ;-) (but then I know how to do it already...)

the biggest obstacle that i can see might be the fact that the boundary lines are not always straight lines.

that doesnt matter

Okay I just had a quick look at Photofiltre (my version is old 6.3.1)
~ Open your file.
~ Change the background colour on the right (to the colour you want for first county) - two overlying squares are shown for fore- & background colours. Click on the 'underneath' one and select a new colour.
~ Select the magicwand tool from the toolbar below those squares (see tooltips if you not sure)
~ Click within a county - the area enclosed by the county boundary will be selected
~ Press the delete button
~ The county should be filled with background colour.

Repeat for next county :)

I know Photoshop can do this (select the area and replace with background or foreground colour) - but it's basic functionality so I'm sure almost any of the free Photoshop replacements could do it. The Gimp for sure but I wouldnt recommend it as interface too complex. Wait see if anyone recommends one of the smaller free programmes.

This guy I find very interesting - he regularly writes for scientific mags (no, I dont read them) and has a very scientific approach in his newsletter (which info is unfortunately is not available online). Here's a good link for a summary though - http://www.thepaleodiet.com/faqs/
The message:
we had a pretty standard diet for a huge timespan, this has only changed since the introduction of farming (of grain in particular).
Our bodies have not adjusted towards this relatively new food etc. etc. (Of course sugar is another new food for us...)

So his approach is to chuck the carbos (concentrated/processed - grain causes us most problems, but also potato, not sure about rice). Also not eat grain-or-corn-fed beef (as it's an unnatural diet for cattle too which causes a lot of health problems for them and indirectly for us as well)- rather eat grass-fed beef (I dont know about pigmeat - pigs would have eaten anything).
And no again, I havent tried it :) but I do eat more protein now than I used to.

BTW the video (link in first post) is very worth a look/listen (I actually listened to it in the background mostly having a look the odd time when he's showing tables).

He does ramble a fair bit at the beginning, but it is a fascinating (& scary at times) story/proof with various sciences, history, politics etc.
The most interesting thing really was that the research that 30(?) years of fat-avoidance was based on was totally flawed. Ironically the ingredient used to make up for the reduction in fat was sugar. He then shows that it was sugar that was causing most of the problems (weight included) all along.... He does touch on the problem being also related to the combination of sugar and other carbohydrates (mentions doughnuts) which could explain the 'success' of Eóin's Coke only diet. I remember years ago an aquaintance going on a mars-bars only diet (I think it was a fad for a while) - I cant remember how long it lasted - she lost weight but one day she collapsed and gave up mars bars after that :-)

But the straw is a surprise. Does it really have an affect? Would a normal one not be as effective? Could you post a picture of one?

I seen one of them just the other day in someone's cutlery drawer (no pics though!)
At the end it was closed off with little holes to let the tea through, but keep the tea leaves out.

if the image is vector (NOT a pixel image) simply enlarge it as much as you can on your monitor, then take a screenshot.

-the picture will not be vector, because kalos is talking about taking a screenshot; a bitmap.
[...]

Yes, of course the screenshot is going to be a pixel image.
But I'm talking about what the 'picture' is *in the PDF* - if it's a vector graph or image in the PDF, then do what I suggested above for best quality [screenshot] image.

General Software Discussion / Re: customize save-as dialog boxes
« Last post by tomos on October 08, 2010, 05:58 PM »
If you are feeling up to it you can edit the registry, see this link.

The above link will lead you to a MSDN page where the section 'Places' (slightly below the middle) will be very interesting regarding the specification of preferred folders, their order and amount. Practically all what you asked for in your post.

Mind you, not all dialog boxes are created equal, so mileage can/will vary.

oooh, didnt know that.

In one of the many related threads here, someone (Darwin?) said that the only app that can change the folders on the left-hand-side is Object Dock (plus) - but dont buy it on that recommendation.

I always wanted that ability but didnt consider it worth 20$ so might have a look at Shades's recommendation

I use Filebox Extender (on XP) and am happy with it.
But I dont think it can "specify default folders for specific extensions"

you could enlarge the image as much as you can before taking the screenshot. That's your best quality there.

how to calculate this? in which zoom can you extract the above scheme?

sorry Kalos, I dont understand your question.

let me rephrase:
if the image is vector (NOT a pixel image) simply enlarge it as much as you can on your monitor, then take a screenshot.

[edit] you can then increase the dpi of the image to show it at a smaller size & higher quality [/edit]

i am also in search of a way to estimate the optimum resolution before taking the snapshot

The optimum resolution for a screenshot would simply be the screen resolution [I presume that's what screenshot tools choose(?)]. If you want to take a screenshot of a vector image/graph/etc (as in your sample pdf) you could enlarge the image as much as you can before taking the screenshot. That's your best quality there.

It different with pixel images (jpg png gif etc) as I mentioned before (you're better off extracting them if possible).

it causes my (admittedly ancient) FreeHand9 (vector drawing programme) to totally malfunction. Shortcut keys dont work or do something else rather than what they should...

This is after simply having started it - I havent set up or changed anything yet.

Okay, I set it to ignore Freehand and things are fine - thought I'd report anyway in case of interest to you.

Can't install version 32: appears not be a valid archive ??

I've finally gotten around to installing it (after downloading about 20 versions :-[)

but the point is: it works here
Did you try re-downloading it ? (it may be in the browser cache and damaged so you could try clearing the cache - or use a different browser)

Out of the several thousand people that saw this page, 78 participated in the poll. Out of those 78, 29 said they’d pay for a premium version of URL Fixer. That’s 37%! You can imagine the numbers that started going through my head at this point – 37% of 70,000 current users is 26,000 users; multiply that by $1.99, and that’s a quick $50,000. (Never mind the 1.5% poll participation rate.)

my emphasis - that's a big 'never mind' !
37% of 1.5% is 0.555%
He got 0.05% in the end which is still a lot less than 0.555% - but very different to comparing it to 37%

I suspect if there was an add-on store type scenario, more people might get used to the idea and actually buy - for those of us who do like to buy, spending $1.99 seems a bargain :)
