I have used that since it first appeared (including all the early buggy versions). It is now a really cool little app.

You're welcome. Another possibility is http://www.mlin.net/TraySaver.shtml

This has stopped development now but the code has been opened up for people to modify. I'm not up to the task but there are those amongst us who may be interested in carrying this project forward if you smile nicely  :D

I haven't tried it but this looks promising and it is free http://www.freevbcod...ShowCode.asp?ID=3334

There are a whole load of other options here:

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Keyboard & Mouse cleaner
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 26, 2005, 06:30 AM »
You could always simply use the device manager and choose disable for which ever device you want to clean??

Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager

although I suspect it depends on the device your using (and drivers) if it allows the 'disable option'

I am using a MS keyboard and mouse and the option is greyed out.

I also have a Wacom graphics pad that has a wireless mouse and that can easily be disabled.

Go to PROFILE at the top, you'll find the option in "Notifications and Email"

Actually I would also like to see forums go further allowing receipt of all posts by email and replying by email too - I much prefer email lists than web forums simply because emailing is so much quicker.

Trouble is none of the off-the-shelf forums that I have found (other than those hotsed for you) offer this facility.

I really can't understand it myself as it would be more flexible to have both formats integrated.

Actually what would be really nice is if a forum could simulatenously run itself as a USENET group so you could use newsreader software to access the boards.

two that come to mind immediately:
netsnippets - http://www.netsnippets.com/

Looks good but Pro version is quite expensive and the free/standard versions look a little limited in some ways. Going to have a play with this one though.

local website archive - http://www.aignes.com/wsarc/index.htm

Looks a little limited. I wan't really just thinking of collecting webpages, but an app that would allow you to effectively archive and use the information to create too.

Anyone else got some ideas?

« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 26, 2005, 04:16 AM »
Looking at InjectURL at http://www.tranglos.com/free/index.html I was thinking how useful it would be to have a web page archive utility that could:

  • capture webpage snapshots
  • store, organise and search them
  • organise output
    • outlining
    • extracting text, images and links
    • adding personal text and images
    • report building

Perhaps a bit like encarta researcher but more built to develop and organise over time rather than for a specific project.

There may well be stuff out there already that can do this but I haven't come across anything like that?

General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for a good Uninstaller App
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 24, 2005, 03:47 PM »
TU3 works on the basis that it snapshots file locations and the whole registry before and after (actually it can be used for any app that runs on your system - you decide when to take the before and after snapshots). Using it to uninstall then undoes all the file and registry changes.

This only really works if you haven't installed something since that changes the same file locations (eg. file associations).

The other thing I have found is that if other apps are running at the same time they will also make some registry changes and so the uninstall routine could have unwanted consequences.

One useful thing is that you can edit the unistall data set - so you can make just the changes YOU want.

I don't personally think any of these uninstall monitoring packages should be used in any automatic way. They are a useful aid ...

Another really useful thing they do is to show you what changes are made for time limited trial software ..... I leave it up to the imagination what potential this may have ;)

There is also HelpScribble (http://www.helpscribble.com/) which looks useful but is a lot cheaper.

I wasn't think so much of memory alarms but more a memory cap so that you can say to a process "That's your lot mate".

Don't know how practical this is though ...
7439
Just a thought but how about the ability to impose a maximum memory usage on a specific process?

Problem - I want to use PrtScrn as a hotkey for another application. Even if I disable the PrtScrn hotkey in SSC it still claims the PrtScrn key as a hotkey. Is there any way you can make the hotkeys selectable without claiming PrtScrn ?

* Reminders when it is disabled (for forgetful people like me) Balloon type message would do, and/or disable for x minutes would be nice when you are doing something which needs to be left alone.

* Rule based actions on running processes: eg. if "process CPU usage" < 1% for 10 minutes terminate and run xxx

Yes I know process guard can handle the last one but it would be nice to have this sort of thing in one place

I am using Firefox 1.0.7. The new window opened and the video continued in the underlying window.

What you could do is when the link is clicked on your site open a new page on your site with a continue to next button link, and open the other site window too. That way the video wouldn't be presented at all until the user is ready, and if the link isn't clicked they can carry on without interruption.

Actually I really like the idea of links out to extra info.

These days almost all manuals are either produced for Newbies or old hands. There doesn't seem to be a middle way. This may reflect the idea that no one reads manuals any more which is a shame because most programs of any depth need a manual to help users get the best from them. They just can't make the assumption that you know the answer before you ask - or even that you know what question to ask in the first place!

A good example is learning to programme in windows. I wanted to get into Visual Basic and Visual C++. The MS Manuals are comprehensive but daunting to newcomers to Windows programming. There are lots of books for beginners but you get left high and dry after a while. If you use MS Visual Studio you are left totally in the dark by their manuals which assume you know everything before you even start.

I have never understood the need for manufacturers to always start with the "What's New ..." page in a manual (or even advertising a product). Returning users and upgraders will find that page easily enough (even if it is at the end, or in the form of a readme file) but as a newcomer I almost always find those pages full of jargon and very offputting.
