Find And Run Robot / Re: Find&Run Robot owns desktop search
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 28, 2005, 06:13 PM »
MSN Search seems to coexist quite happily as does Copernic.

Personally I have given up on all of them - they seem to use an inordinate amount of disc space and keep the hard discs chuntering away permanently - I can do without that.

General Software Discussion / SmartDraw 7 special offer ...
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 28, 2005, 01:46 PM »
I use SmartDraw and like it a lot but it isn't cheap. I got it cheaper with an educational discount.

Today I got an email with a special offer which some people may be interested in (you would need to get together to benefit though).

Here was the original offer: https://www.smartdra...save2_link&ssl=1

Clipboard Help+Spell / Request ... foreign Characters
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 28, 2005, 10:26 AM »
I am trying to find a way to get quick and easy access to accented characters for a friend.

At the moment I am using PerfectMenu to generate a popup menu in any application when Alt is depressed with a list accented characters and it works well.

Trouble is it is using the clipboard to pass the single characters and conseqeuntly CHS picks them all up.

Would it be possible to have an option in CHS to ignore clips < n characters long ?

How about changing it to a shapes option, and add other shapes too ... eg. regular polygons with moveable corners (so they can be deformed into any shape)

I still remember my first VCR. I bought it second hand and was still using it about 5 years later.

Now consumer electronics seem to have a built in timer to ensure they expire 1 day after the guarantee runs out. In recent years I have got through 4 VCRs, 3 DVD recorders (all guarantee replacements), about 5 satellite receivers (the only item I pay for a service contract because they are so unreliable), 2 fridges and 2 freezers. To be fair the last freezer that collapsed was about 25 years old ;) but the new one is already falling to bits after a few weeks (the little bits of 'trim' seem to be glued on with flour and water).

Personally I suspect my electricity supply is proving too enthusiastic for my lack lustre appliances ...

Sorry, I know my English is terrible.

Hey don't worry - it's a hell of a lot better than my Italian ;-)

Excuse my ignorance ... can someone explain the advantage of using Bit Torrents?

From what I have seen it appears to be distributed file sharing - but there seems to me to be a huge potential for getting nasty files and opening your system to hackers.

I may be missing something but Microsoft's Windows tools Narrator and Magnify seem to do this.

For some reason though I don't seem to be able to get Narrator to work consistently.

In Windows XP both are unser Start > Programs > Accessories > Accessibility

asuming you installed them with Windows (otherwise they can be added in the Add/Remove Programs applet as Windows Components).

Can anyone else get Narrator to work as it is supposed to?

TextAloud is available for $29.99 and whilst that doesn't give the best sound quality it does work quite well.

How realistic would it be to produce collaborative components though a site like this, and then offer them as donationware ?

I know it is time consuming to do this sort of thing but I'm sure it would generate a lot of interest ...

I know it only addresses half of the problem but have you tried TextAloud (http://www.textaloud.com/) which will read just about anything on screen.

Point well taken - that's why I said their pricing was disgusting.

Personally I think pretty much all software should be under $50. I honestly think if that happened companies would make more money as there would far less incentive to look for pirated copies.
7417
Actually most of the top companies do good deals for students. If you want Visual Studio MS certainly used to provide Visual Studio Pro for less than $100 (I bought Visual Studio 6 that way) and they tend to class anyone who knows a student these days (including school kids) as eligible for educational licenses.

Borland have always been quite generous - at one time they were giving Delphi PE away for free!

it absolutely blows my mind that all of these great site-impaired software are so expensive - it shows everything that bothers me about this culture of trying to charge the most money you can get away with, even when it would cost you NOTHING to give this software to people who would really benefit from it.

Whilst I think the pricing for this is pretty disgusting a company producing software (and high quality software) for a particular market cannot really be expected to give it away to that market.

I suppose it really depends who is producing this and why - if it is a company that pays programmers to produce applications to their spec you can appreciate that they are unlikely to get professionals cheaply. On the other hand they are limiting themselves somewhat if they only go for high cost programmers when there are huge numbers who would donate some time to a project for this sort of purpose.

The answer probably lies, like most market place answers, in competition. If someone produces a competing application for much less they will be forced to charge less.

As a genuine question how big a market exists for sight impaired users -  I presume it must be fairly large ??

for how to separate the sticky topics from the rest (not sure which SMF version this applies to though)

I've found lots of other uses for TUN, other than the obvious one it was designed for.

Now that is a tantalizing quote .... come on then you can't leave it there ;)

Actually it is one thing I like about TUn - you can monitor anything that is running to see what files and registry entries it changes.

Only slight problem is that the monitored app has to be running on its own to get meaningful results.

What we could really do with is a monitor that is restricted to particular application, process or service ... do I feel an IDEA request coming on :P

Living Room / Hot under the collar .... (and in the wallet)

I had a very frustrating day yesterday.

My DVD recorder went on the fritz 2 days out of its 12 month guarantee period (according to my supplier).

The audio sounded like a rather loud vacuum cleaner when trying to record etc.

Consequently a great deal of time was spent on the phone (mostly listening to extremely annoying music).

Let me explain (and I will get to the point ... honest).

A little over a year ago I purchased a JVC DRMV1 comined DVD recorder and VCR, got all excited but was extremely frustrated when it arrive all shiny and new and didn't work. After a long argument with the shop who siad I had to pay for it to be returned and then wait up to 2 weeks while they tested it I rejected the item, called my credit card compnay and got a full refund.

However, I like the machine and ordered another from a different supplier (that I had used before). You can imagine my frustration when that arrived with a different fault - but true to their word the machine was collected and replaced quickly.

You can imagine after 3 machines I was not a happy bunny yesterday. Ironically I have not had this machine 12 months (because the original was delivered faulty and replaced) but my trusted supplier said they apply the guarantee period from the date the order was placed, and anyway the guarrantee was with the manufacturer. Their policy is to refuse to help from 7 days after purchase. All further support is from JVC. Great - 30 minutes of listening to pure muzak on JVCs switchboard I was told that I had been misled (in fact the company were acting illegally according to UK law) and that ALL guarantee work is undertaken via their dealer network.

Having gone round and round in circles I got absolutely no where (including not getting promised call backs from my supplier).

So why am I wittering on about this here:

BEWARE buying expensive consumer electronics online!

There are a lot of box shifters out there offering a great deal on expensive gear, but when things go wrong you cannot win an argument over the phone ....

Don't get me wrong I did my homework - I used a site that had rave reviews from satisfied customers (I was one of them from my first purchase).

The question is: Is it worth saving a few dollars/pounds but have no support, and have to use the courts to enforce guarantees!

Discuss ....

PS: Two further outcomes worth thinking about (esp. in Europe) ...

1) Lots of these internet box shifter offer a unique service - region free DVD players/recorders. You can't buy them in the shops because the manufacturers don't supply them. This means the supplier is modifying them before they left their premises. JVC pointed out to me that once this is done the warranty moves in its entirity to the supplier ... ie. the supplier has invalidated the manufacturers warranty !!!

2) I have discovered the problem with my machine. I took it apart myself and was astonished to find the DVD drive was a standard IDE/ATAPI DVD-RW drive! Having built computers I realised that a DVD that is too hot to touch is not happy. A clean of the extractor fan, and a little more ventilation (a few holes in the case) means the drive now runs cold and the machine is much happier. Some money saved - thank God from brushes and drills ...

You're welcome.

Trouble with MMM (Free) is you get hooked - but then MMM+ is only $9 and adds a lot.

I have to say PerfectMenu is a really interesting tool - not exactly simple to use but allows you to do all sorts of things ...

You can add extra buttons around every right click menu (see image above) and these have standard tasks available but are fully customizable to whatever you want. (Including recorded and VBA compatible Macros if you use MacroWorks by the same author). If you don't like the look of these added menu bars they are totally customizable or can be ommitted. There is even a currently active Tasks bar which can be added (like pressing ALT TAB to cycle applications but permanently visible with a single mouse click)

You can REPLACE any right click menu for any application

You can add right click menus (customized to whatever you want) to any app (and restrict them to appear only over the title bar or when CTRL or ALT etc. are pressed).

It is going to take a while to really get to the depths of this app - but it really does give control over what you see in your menus!
