Nope. We used nLite and HP USB Format tool. Basically turned the USB Drive on a Win98 Boot Floppy and start the XP Setup from there.

Thanks. I corrected the original post.

This was a year of very few tangible gifts (I'm not complaining. The intangible ones were awesome!) so I'd have to say that my favorite is Animal Crossing City Folk with Wii Speak. You know, for Nintendo Wii.

Speaking of which, I need more Wii friends. :-[

If you intend to dual-boot the machine and it has Windows on it already, I highly recommend Wubi. It's 1 MB and it downloads and installs Ubuntu from within Windows. I'm a total linux noob too, but I just installed Ubuntu today with Wubi and it worked fantastically. It also allows you to uninstall Ubuntu from Add/Remove Programs in Windows. It's a great utility for Windows users who are total noobs to linux.

Just for reference, I recently started a thread about Fedora 9 in which I ultimately chose to go with Ubuntu, and Wubi was how I did it.

Thanks once again to scancode, who pointed out Wubiw to me. It's a 0.99 MB file that will download and install Ubuntu from within Windows. As mentioned before, my MSI Wind isn't due until sometime this upcoming week, but I gave Wubi a try on my older XP machine and am now exploring Ubuntu.

I'll probably just use Ubuntu instead of Fedora.

I personally think it's a lot of fun trying to figure out this new OS. So far it's been a good experience. It kind of reminds me of when my family made the transition from Windows 3.11 to Windows 95. I had a general idea of what to do in order to do what I wanted, but I had to explore the OS and menus to find out how to do those things.

Big thanks to everyone in the IRC channel who has helped me understand some of these changes!  DC really is great for stuff like this. :-*

Living Room / Re: Gadgets that make you look like a jerk
« Last post by Deozaan on January 24, 2009, 12:54 PM »
Blackberry: I don't know. I only know one person who has one and he's a workaholic so while the "snark" might be accurate, I don't think it automatically makes you look like a jerk if you have a Blackberry.

Bluetooth: I think some clarification is in order. Bluetooth is a great technology. One particular use of that technology is Bluetooth headsets for cell phones. Yes, Bluetooth headsets for cell phones are extremely annoying and make you look like a jerk in public. But they have their uses for those people who insist on using the phone in the car, or if you are playing games on your computer and need both your hands free. :P But let's be honest here, shall we? You don't need a Bluetooth headset to sound like a jerk in public. Plenty of people hold their phones up to their ears while they talk in public and are still jerks.

TiVo: I'm not sure what the snark means. But I also don't understand how owning a TiVo makes you look like a jerk. I, personally, hate watching television and the only thing that makes it bearable is a TiVo. (In this case I'm using TiVo to mean DVR, much like how people often use "Kleenex" to mean a "blow-your-nasty-snot-out-of-your-nose-and-into-your-hands-tissue.") TiVo is a big deal to me when it comes to TV. It's almost the only way to get me to watch TV.

Apple's MacBook Air: Why not just say Apple's [anything]? I know this is a major stereotype, but it sure seems like the large majority of Apple users only use Apple products because it is fashionable or popular. Apple just exudes a certain air of elitism, even from their own marketing. It's not just the users, but the company itself that gives off this image: "I'm cool, fashionable, and good looking because I have an Apple [insert product here]!"

iPod: See the above.

Linux: I'm not sure about this one. It does seem somewhat true, depending. To use a high school analogy, people who use Apple products are like the Jocks and Cheerleaders trying to be popular/superior by showing off their fashion and money in a world of admittedly geeky technology, while Linux users can often be seen as Geeks and Nerds trying to be popular/superior by showing off their intelligence and computer mastery. While it is true that most people I know who use linux will make a snarky comment about its superiority over Windows from time to time, generally it seems the people who do that are doing it in more of a way that anybody who just loved a product and truly thought it was better would plug their own favorite product when the "competition" was mentioned. An example conversation:

Windows Guy: I just got a new computer and I'm considering whether or not to put Vista on it.

Linux Guy: You should put Linux on it. Ubuntu for the win!

Windows Guy: ... So anyway, [goes on to talk about the merits of Vista vs. XP.]

Linux Guy: [Joins in on normal, rational, civil conversation about Vista vs. XP.]

Whereas replacing Linux Guy with Mac Guy would result in something like this:

Windows Guy: I just got a new computer and I'm considering whether or not to put Vista on it.

Mac Guy: Microsoft is total garbage. I can't believe you actually bought a PC and haven't gotten a Mac yet! Macs are so much better!

Windows Guy: That's not true.

Mac Guy: Yeah? Well then how come there are so many viruses for Windows? Because Microsoft sucks (LOLZ)!

Segway: I've only seen these things in movies. People actually use them for day-to-day use? I can understand their use but they seem bulky to me. I'd rather go for an electric scooter, as in a relatively normal sized scooter (that you move by pushing your foot across the ground) but with a small electric motor on it. That way it's more compact and you don't run people off the sidewalk.

NOTE: I wrote all this before seeing the most recent 3 replies.

Anyway, there's only "x86_64"? I personally read that as 64bit-only - but it's damn annoying that 64bit x86 has been called so many things, can make the things a bit muddy. Personally I prefer x64, since you can say simple "x86" or "x64", same number of chars. A lot of linux distros prefer "i386" or "amd64", respectively... while I'm not fond of those naming conventions, at least it makes stuff pretty unambiguous.
I take it that means I should look for an i386 ISO.

Any particular reason you feel like sticking with redhat?
Not especially. The main reason is just that it's what my school uses. As I'm sure you can tell, I don't know a whole lot about linux. I don't really want to worry a whole lot about getting the OS installed. I just need to be able to run the shell and get things like Java and Eclipse installed for this particular class.

However, I presume you're not going to be using your netbook as you would a full laptop or desktop, so why not consider a lean cloud-centered distro like gOS?
To be honest I don't know exactly what cloud-computing is, but from what I've read on other threads here at DC I've come to the impression that it's not all it's cut out to be. So I dismissed gOS when I read about it a few days ago. By the way does gOS have anything to do with Google? I was also confused. Is the OS called gOS Gadgets or are the gadgets something else entirely? :-\

I'd be happy to snailmail you a copy of the Fedora DVD if you'd like. Same goes for Ubuntu and several other distros. Let me know what you want. :)
Thanks for the offer, 40hz. Bandwidth isn't really a problem for me. The problem is that the Wind doesn't have an optical drive so I can't use DVDs or CDs to install anything. It might be more beneficial for me to install some virtual DVD drives on the Wind and download the ISOs myself.

What I've been trying to say is that I know that to install Windows you need to boot from the CD/DVD. Can you set up dualboot and linux from within the Windows OS? That would certainly make getting linux working a lot easier using a virtual drive.

General Software Discussion / Re: RedHat Linux: Fedora 9

Personally, I'd go for Ubuntu or KUbuntu - easy to use, pretty updated, comes on a single install media. Should be possible to netinstall (though I never did that myself. You need a netboot installer, which come as CD ISOs usually, dunno the procedures involved in getting it onto your flashdrive).

Grab the x86 version, you don't have a use for x64 - I'm not sure whether the ATOM CPU in the machine supports 64bit anyway.

I'm sure the ATOM CPU doesn't handle 64bit either. But the iso from the mirror doesn't let me choose x86 or x64. It gives me a single choice of x86_64, which I'm guessing at this point means it contains both x86 and x64 versions on the ISOs.

8GB SSD for both XP and Linux? Going to be cramped for space.

No. The Wind has a 160GB SATA drive. But since it has no optical drive the only alternative I can think of is somehow booting ISOs on my 8GB USB stick.

General Software Discussion / RedHat Linux: Fedora 9
« Last post by Deozaan on January 23, 2009, 12:36 AM »
Okay, I'm another one of those life-long Windows users who doesn't know a lot about linux. I've accessed a few linux clusters using PuTTy a few times but other than that (and even including that) I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to linux. I just started a new semester in school, working on my Computer Science degree, and for my programming class I'm going to be doing a lot of Java, working in a linux shell, and accessing a Linux cluster to submit my homework and test my programs, etc. If you are an experienced linux user, you will most likely be able to tell by my vocabulary that I really don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to linux vocabulary. I decided it was time to get linux installed on a computer of my own and thought I may as well use what my school is using.

So, I just purchased a netbook (MSI Wind U120-024US), and scancode was helpful enough to help me out with nLite and the HP USB Format tool to create a bootable USB drive so I can install Windows XP Pro SP3 on the thing, but I also want to dual boot with linux. The Wind won't arrive until sometime next week so I'm taking this time to prepare getting the software I want on it for installation. So, back to Fedora 9.

After navigating RedHat's website I found this mirror to download Fedora 9. And this is where I'm not sure what to do. It appears as though Fedora 9 uses 7 CDs to fully install (What the smurf is that about? Windows XP fits on a single CD!) but before I even get there, do I download the i386 version or the x86_64 version?

Once that question is answered, should I download all seven ISOs or just the NetInstall ISO or get a Live CD? Just keep in mind that netbooks (or at least the Wind I ordered) doesn't actually have an optical drive, so if I need to boot from CD I'm kind of smurfed unless I can get it to work on my 8GB or 512MB flash stick.

I suppose those are all the questions I have for now regarding which one to download. Also if any of you have personal experience with Fedora I'd especially appreciate your input on whether or not it's a good idea to go with that particular distro or if it's a pain in the neck. The one at school doesn't seem that difficult but then again, it's already been set up for me. I didn't have to mount filesystems or whatever to get it running first. It just boots into a windows-like GUI of some sort and I click the button for the shell from the Fedora equivalent of the quick launch bar.

Wouldn't the worst downloads automatically be anything that came with viruses or other malware, or that file you torrented which ended up with an unknown password on it or was a completely different thing than the download description said?

The team members, accustomed to working on Macintoshes, found computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software.

I'm guessing this means Microsoft Office 2003.

As for Obama officials having to suffer with PCs instead of their elite, fancy-pants Macs, let's please not bring the Messiah into the whole PC vs. Mac issue. It's already bad enough as it is. It's no fair when God is on your side. :P

The best way to fix this without having to ever worry about it again is to get your speakers put in the right way. If you've got small speakers, switch their sides. If they're bigger, just plug them in to the appropriate R or L jacks.

Most speakers I've seen over the past 10-15 years are either labeled L and R or can be individually plugged in to Left or Right jacks on the power source, which is usually a subwoofer.

What Amazon (and other sellers) should do (worldwide) is to state in ALL BELKIN product descriptions that reviews cannot be trusted and that Belkin business practices are highly dubious and immoral. Buy this item at your own risk.

Actually, it seems that only positive reviews cannot be trusted.

What's scary about a situation like this is that anybody who didn't like a certain company could do something like this to make the company lose most of its credibility. I could go post an advertisement asking people to give positive reviews for D-Link, then send in the link to the advertisement as a news tip somewhere, and the internets would get all fired up over it before the truth was all revealed.

Of course, in this specific situation, it does indeed seem to be a Belkin employee doing this, but as I said, potentially this could be done as an attack on a company rather than a result of unethical practices.

If the objective is just to make it easier to read, you can take a look at some Accessibility features for making text larger on your screen.

But if you really just want a larger font size then yeah, you're pretty much out of luck. Though I suppose you could also change the page layout (margins) to fit more on a single page in an effort to minimize pagination changes.

Hey folks, just an FYI I found this informational web page that you can link people to that send you spam/junkmail:

http://www.thanksno.com/

oh here's another one:

http://bccplease.com/

I just got an e-mail from someone in my school's staff that was sent to about 250 people. Most of them were in the To: field, with less than 10 in the CC: field.

I replied with these two websites. Let's see what happens. :)

Well, her response led me to believe that she didn't care. She basically said that I should expect to receive e-mails sent to tons and tons of people because of my major. But then I received another mass e-mail from her and even though there were still about 15 people in the To: field, they all appeared (to me) to be staff, and my e-mail address was not visible. So it worked!

I'd like the option to ignore a thread so that it doesn't show up in my Unread Posts list. Ignoring entire boards is useful sometimes (although it can be hard to find) but if there's a single thread in the Living Room that I don't care to follow anymore, I'd really like the option to ignore it.

The thing is, if I ever changed my mind, I'd need to be able to find it manually. What I think the main point is that it should still be listed if I manually browse the forum tree, but should not show up on unread posts or latest posts, etc.

It is realistic because it's happening just like what mouser described right now in the USA. :(
