N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Release: NoteMe
« Last post by wraith808 on April 10, 2012, 08:06 AM »
A tip for NoteMe users:

With NoteMe and gmail, you can actually take your task system for notes a step further- you can send it to yourself + [email protected] and it will still come to your email.  So if your email is [email protected], you can send it to [email protected].  Then you can set a filter on that e-mail address and do whatever you want with it (that gmail filters allow).

Whoa... I didn't know anyone actually used DesktopURLEmbed.  Neat!

I could not sit there all day talking to my stupid PC - I shall stick with typing until I can connect something directly to my brain. And imagine trying to work alongside someone else!

Plus I always have music on. How is one going to compile
public never static void going to main(String[] give you) { up SwingUtilities.never going to .invokeAndWait(new Runnable() etc. etc.

Personally, I think the future will be sensors that track the nerve impulses that go to the fingers. So you think about typing, and the words appear.

other than for coding, which I don't think could be reliably done with another input

I wonder when the keyboard as an input device will be something that hasn't been done before successfully but has been hinted at, i.e. a roll up sheet that pulls out of the device or a series of input keys that are projected onto a surface.

But looking realistically at it, is this form factor meant for things that require a keyboard, i.e. coding and such?  If dictation gets better (as it seems to be), then writing wouldn't require a keyboard, nor many other things that we use it for.  Then biometrics could be used in place of password manipulation, and other things can already be reliably done using the screen.  Is it truly that the expectations of keyboard input (other than for coding, which I don't think could be reliably done with another input) the only thing that ties us to the keyboard?

You're not laughing at Apple- you're laughing at a terrible situation for multiple users, including those that don't fit the mold of the imperious coffee shop drinkers that look down their noses at PCs being victimized by some nameless offenders.  Just my view of it...

It's pretty amazing that something as detrimental as this, people are actually happy over.  I mean, vindication I can understand.  But happiness?  At something like this?

Reported last year, patched last month... don't know what's up with that.  They say it's because Java isn't automatically included in the patches for Macs.

Developer's Corner / Re: Opinions sought: should I open source Auspex?
« Last post by wraith808 on April 05, 2012, 10:12 AM »
Is there an existing community that will pick up development? From what I've read, you will simply spend the time stimulating the community around your project instead of developing otherwise.
Just open sourcing a project doesn't make it active.

What about giving yourself an incentive to develop it by making it a commercial product?

This.  Or actively solicit help from other parties before you attempt to open source it.

Yeah... I've been on there a lot; I guess I need to start my articles again :)

Some that I've recently backed/have been looking at that are still open:

Shadowrun Returns - Shadowrun CRPG
Bendi - The iPad Stand Exactly Where You Want - Ipad stand
Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack - Wargaming with legos
Artisan Dice - Carved wooden dice
Wasteland 2 - Sequel to Wasteland the classic CRPG
The Astonishing Adventures of Doc Wilde!!! - Pulp fiction series (a la Doc Savage)
Tectonic Craft Studios New Line of War Games Terrain - Wargaming Terrain
Conquest - Boardgame on your ipad to reduce setup time.
Spriter - Animation tool
The Dead Linger - Zombie Shooter
Starlight Inception - Space Combat Game
Aura Tactics - Unity Tactical RPG
Valdis Story: Abyssal City - Side scrolling video game

And on a side note: something that was started by InXile Entertainment (Wasteland 2 creators) - Kicking it Forward - putting proceeds from Kickstarter projects back into Kickstarter.

Have you looked at SnapDB?  For simple stuff, it works really well IMO.  It's only flat files/single table- but for cataloging sometimes that's all that's required...

It is quite a bit harder than it needs to be.  I've found that it works... sometimes.  More reliably if you're going to static IPs.  Other than that, I'm not much help... I have a hard time at times connecting from one computer to the other.  Thankfully my printer and NAS being on static IPs means it doesn't matter as much... but still, every time I try to connect to other computers (or use software that does), it's hit and miss.  I've even profiled the connection, and I see what's wrong.  But I just don't know how to fix it/don't want to invest the time.

The only step that I've found means anything (at least most of the time) is if you can ping the other computers.  If you can do that, then you're at least on the right path.

Wish I had seen this earlier.  Looks like a neat program, but $12.95 per computer is a bit much for such a niche to me unfortunately.

Didn't seem to work for ePub attachments (and yes the Kindle app was installed)
-Carol Haynes (April 03, 2012, 03:48 PM)

Strange... I did it for just that...?

UPDATE: I was curious, so tried again.  It worked for my other book readers (stanza, megareader), but apparently Nook nor Kindle set themselves up to be able to handle epub.  Strange oversight, but that's more B&N and Amazon's fault (I'd say it was b/c they don't want people using their apps to read non-drm books...)

This is going to be almost as silly a iPad emails where you can't open some extension types!
-Carol Haynes (April 03, 2012, 02:50 PM)

This again?  Look at the bottom of the e-mail on the attachment.  Click and hold.  A slide up dialog will come up with  the default action and a button for open in.  Click Open In, and it will show the registered applications.  Not much different than windows, other than there's no 'browse for application'.  Applications can also register themselves as generic handlers for attachments.

You haven't heard of Tor before or something in that article about Tor?  :tellme:

I think he meant the way you can have an anonymous web site through TOR.

Bingo.

TOR is free software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis

How To Create A Hidden Service Tor Site To Set Up An Anonymous Website Or Server (via MakeUseOf)

I've never heard of this until now... has anyone had any experience with it?

I retain my worries about DropBox - there has been enough coverage of that already!

Does the relative safety of Dropbox matter in the event that your data is encrypted with a key that is not stored in the same place?

1password's license isnt' a lifetime one. You'll get discounts for new major versions though. Or is there an option to buy a lifetime license? Thanks.

Ah... I see that you're correct.  I'd thought it was... though as I said, I've been using it for 3 years now with upgrades, so new versions don't seem that far between.  I'm not sure what upgrade costs there are, and how necessary they will be when the time comes if I just want to continue with the version that I have, so maybe that's comparable.

Not sure I understand that comment? I didn't say anything about 1Password since I have never used it (or made any other password manager except RoboForm - a company I now despise and wouldn't trust at all).
-Carol Haynes (March 29, 2012, 03:40 AM)

Who is to say 1Password is safe - and you use DropBox to sync (!!!!) - my God that makes LastPass look like Fort Knox!
-Carol Haynes (March 27, 2012, 05:07 PM)

As I'd said the files are encrypted- so dropbox doesn't even come into the equation, yet there's the comparison.
* wraith808 shrugs

Not a big deal.
