General Software Discussion / Re: Any app to auto-replace Notepad ??
« Last post by Curt on February 28, 2007, 04:32 PM »
ConText does it, if i recall.

Wow; that conTEXT sure is some fine editor!

But it may be a hole lot more than what I am seeking - and too advanced for me.

Three things I really liked about Metapad was the speed (the setup.zip is only 46 KB), the right-click option "Open with Metapad" - and the simplicity dispite many features. The only feaure I have been missing is the abillity to handle binary files (and that auto-replacement thing...). Other than that, it was perfect to me.

But that 'auto-replacement thing' has become important to me. And for some reason I also find it important that it will handle binary files (even though I wouldn't know what to do with such a file...), so I am looking for something alike Metapad that will auto-replace Notepad, handle binary files, is speedy and both simple and more advanced than Notepad, at the same time, and free and good looking as well.  8)

General Software Discussion / Any app to auto-replace Notepad ??
« Last post by Curt on February 28, 2007, 03:39 PM »
For five years or so, I have been using Metapad, and think it is fine. Now my old PC with Windows 2000 is dead, and I am looking for a replacement for Notepad for my new PC with XP Home. When I read what I did many years ago, when installing Metapad, my stomack gets uneasy and my heart pumps extra hard: did I really do all this, just to replace Notepad, back then? And now, using XP, it has gotten even more difficult! :

[28] - Windows XP

Q:  How do I replace notepad under Windows XP?

A:  System File Protection is in full effect.

You can try the following to get around System File Protection. Be very quick or XP will replace the file and it won't work. Make sure you don't have the WinXP CD-ROM in your drive!

Copy metapad renamed as Notepad.exe to the clipboard.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache (NB: in XP SP2 this has changed to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386)
Paste the file there.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32 (using Backspace)
Paste the file there.
QUICKLY! Go back to C:\WINDOWS (another Backspace) and paste the file there.
If you have done this correctly, a message should pop up saying that a bad version of a Windows System file has been installed. Make sure you select 'Keep this file' or a similar option. If it doesn't work, keep trying, because it will. Just do the three pastes very fast.

A variation on the method above follows (submitted by Samutz):

I found another way to replace notepad with metapad that doesn't require you to work too fast. I made a copy of metapad.exe called notepad.exe, then made a batch file with the following commands:

    copy /-y notepad.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache
    copy /-y notepad.exe C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
    copy /-y notepad.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32
    copy /-y notepad.exe C:\WINDOWS

Then I saved it as copy.bat and ran it. It prompts for overwrite for each file, but all you have to hit is Y and Enter a few times. I find it much easier than trying to flip through folders as fast as I can to paste it before Windows replaces it.

- for now, this is too confusing to me!

I know there are many editors to replace Notepad, but someone must have written some kind of auto-replacement feature as well???

:tellme:  Speak up, please!

As you probably know by now Beta of any program is a RISK.

Yeah; now I know it for sure. But you know; when you have done something many times, and it always turned out well, then after some time you are not likely to really expect any risk at all. Well, in the end this miscalculation got me a new PC with a new OS...

Nice! I like the set up; a small toolbar at the menubar:

However; I am a little un-easy with the procedure. It seems to me that I have to up- and down- load the page, I wanna print, before printing. Maybe it is not so, but it seems that this is the way.. ?? Well, maybe I am seing spooks and ghosts  :-[

... it can get up to like almost a gig of virtual memory, and like 7 or 8 hundred mb of regular memory, and I wanted to limit this, ...

700 - 1000 MB??!! I too would like to 'limit' such a powersucker; I would never run it! (I don't even have that much RAM.)

If you really wanna keep such a millstone around your neck, my penny would be that you change the Priority in Windows Taskmanager to Below Normal. It won't bring you more RAM, but should give the other apps a chance to do their work anyway, I guess.

When you run Outpost (Outlook), is there an icon in the system tray and the button on the task bar?  If so, right click on the icon in the tray and look for an option about hiding when minimized.

So easy... Thanks a lot!

Evil Microsoft... They bought Agnitum! >:( ;D

- or was it Agnitum who bought MS.. ??

[Headline and post changed because of confusion about correct names]

I made a terrible mistake last Friday :-[  and had to buy a new PC Saturday morning   ;D

But it has been more than 3 years since I last tried to install Office 2003, so now I'm confused - I cannot remember what I did almost 4 years ago. Please forgive me in advance; I might ask a lot (more) of beginner's questions in the time to come!

Does Outlook (the icon "Indbakke - Microsoft...") really take up all this silly space when it should be minimized to the Notification Area? On my old Win2K it would always minimize to 'sys-tray' - without the use of any third party program.

look.bmp

Beginner's question, number one:
How do I make Outlook minimize to Sys-tray / Notification Area - without the use of any 3'rd party app?

1) IE 7 is supposed to be vastly improved over IE 6 in avoiding cutting off the text on the right margin.

2) An IE add-in called 'Printer Friendly' is supposed to do exactly what you want: http://www.antair.co.../content/view/16/44/

I upgraded (from IE 6) to IE 7 just a couple of hours before I read your post....

.. the current version of Printer Friendly 1.4 is optimized to work best with Internet Explorer 6. Upcoming releases of Printer Friendly will be optimized for Internet Explorer 7.

But I do find it expensive. $15 may sound cheap, but it will only grant you upgrades for a year.

... all customers of Printer Friendly 1.4 receive free upgrades for one year.

Every context menu should have "Send shortcut to Start (Start > Programs > Start)"

Get Vista for Free - Includes Free Bonus Trojan!

This BBC article sent to me (= Gizmo Richards) by (his) subscriber Brett Shand makes some very interesting observations about the number of computers now harnessed in Botnets but to me the most sobering point was the observation that "about 50% of all pirated Windows programs came with Trojans pre-installed on them." Most of the trojans of course would be stealthed so you could never detect them with security software.

Still interested in one of those Chinese copies of Vista floating around the P2P networks?

So... what do I do? :)

Well, that's a question I cannot answer  8)

Five years ago I wrote some guy and told him something. He liked my letter so much that he published it on his site, but included my e-mail address..  >:(   I wrote him several times and begged him to remove it, but he never responded. For two years my inbox was over-crowded with spam.

Then I learned about filtering, and I found SPAMfighter  :-* They live just around the corner to me, but I and some 3 million other users think SPAMfighter might be the best solution for Outlook and Outlook Express. But maybe you won't use any of those clients at home - the Bat may be a better choice??
Why do you prefer the Bat?  :tellme:

Okay, I'm a cynic :)

Maybe not.

In Copenhagen we can address the power supplyer's office and borrow a divice to meassure any 230 Volt app's power consumption. But LocalCooling is XP only, so I cannot test if all this is a PR stunt only, or if it actually does what it says. But I sure am curious to know the answer.

... iirc there were links in the about box. Nothing blatant, though.

No, they wouldn't need to do it a blatant way, would they, when their declared "goal is to introduce 100,000,000 PC users into the Local Cooling community." 100 million machines, each with a link to Uniblue - now that is Marketing, with a big m!

(...) The site doesn't have much info, (...)
No; they don't tell a lot. In fact they tell very little with the frequent use of big words.

I wonder what their agenda is, and how they plan on making money.
I imagine their agenda may be okay; to do something some will find important and honourable, but of course they may also want to promote their company, Uniblue. I can't test the program, sinse it is XP only, so I'm asking: Is there a link to at least one of Uniblue's other programs, inside LocalCooling??

An extremely easy and very political correct way of saving energy has emerged from Uniblue: LocalCooling (XP only). Install the free program and save energy! According to the company it is quite a lot of energy 'we' are waisting.

Download the 100% Free LocalCooling Application and it automatically optimizes your PC's power consumption by using a more effective power save mode. You will be able to see your savings in real-time translated to more evironmental terms such as how many trees and gallons of oil you have saved.

Our goal is to introduce 100,000,000 PC users into the Local Cooling community. If just 100 million of us optimize the efficiency of our computers’ energy consumption, we could prevent over 300 billion kg of CO2 gas emissions, equivalent to over 1.8 billion gallons of oil, in just the first year alone.

LocalCooling.com is a non-commercial website and is not a selling platform. It is malware free, carries no advertising, political content or bias in any way. It has been developed specifically to help in the fight against global warming; to demonstrate that individuals can take action and make a real difference to an issue of global importance. By joining the LocalCooling.com Community, PC users can work together to bring about a positive, noticeable change to the future of our planet.

Does anyone know of a freeware alternative to do that, preferably without having to re-encode.
No, I don't know of such an app. But maybe you would like to convert the files into another format, say AVI, where there would be a handful of free editors. You could try Super C (scroll almost all down), or maybe do it online at Media-Convert
